Book Synopsis Crop Production for Agricultural Improvement by : Muhammad Ashraf
Download or read book Crop Production for Agricultural Improvement written by Muhammad Ashraf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-02 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent years, the looming food scarcity problem has highlighted plant sciences as an emerging discipline committed to devise new strategies for enhanced crop productivity. The major factors causing food scarcity are biotic and abiotic stresses such as plant pathogens, salinity, drought, flooding, nutrient deficiency or toxicity which substantially limit crop productivity world-wide. In this scenario, strategies should be adopted to achieve maximum productivity and economic crop returns. In this book we have mainly focused on physiological, biochemical, molecular and genetic bases of crop development and related approaches that can be used for crop improvement under environmental adversaries. In addition, the adverse effects of different biotic (diseases, pathogens etc.) and abiotic (salinity, drought, high temperatures, metals etc) stresses on crop development and the potential strategies to enhance crop productivity under stressful environments are also discussed.

Download or read book Micropropagation written by P. Debergh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micropropagation is a technology that has developed within the past 30 years. Earlier overviews of plant tissue culture have reviewed micropropagation as just one of many tissue culture procedures in use. Since the applications of this technology have multiplied so rapidly in recent years, we decided that a specific overview of the technology was now appropriate Our book begins with a review of the general principles of tissue culture as applied to micropropagation. This review is concise since the general topic has been covered in numerous other books and reviews. The basic principles of laboratory design and construction are summarized in the second chapter. Common problems encountered in micropropagation, both during and after culture, are examined in detail in four chapters. As micropropagation developed from a laboratory curiosity to a commercial industry, different considerations became important. These are discussed in two chapters. An attempt has been made to assess the current status of commercial production around the world. This has been difficult because commercial production figures are often closely guarded and little has been done to collect statistics on this growing industry. Applications to a broad range of crops are discussed in a series of chapters. These try to report the state of the art in each area, but since applications for some crops are much more advanced than for others, the focus of these chapters varies depending upon the progress that has been made.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Agriculture and Food Systems written by Neal K. Van Alfen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 2745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encyclopedia of Agriculture and Food Systems, Second Edition, Five Volume Set addresses important issues by examining topics of global agriculture and food systems that are key to understanding the challenges we face. Questions it addresses include: Will we be able to produce enough food to meet the increasing dietary needs and wants of the additional two billion people expected to inhabit our planet by 2050? Will we be able to meet the need for so much more food while simultaneously reducing adverse environmental effects of today’s agriculture practices? Will we be able to produce the additional food using less land and water than we use now? These are among the most important challenges that face our planet in the coming decades. The broad themes of food systems and people, agriculture and the environment, the science of agriculture, agricultural products, and agricultural production systems are covered in more than 200 separate chapters of this work. The book provides information that serves as the foundation for discussion of the food and environment challenges of the world. An international group of highly respected authors addresses these issues from a global perspective and provides the background, references, and linkages for further exploration of each of topics of this comprehensive work. Addresses important challenges of sustainability and efficiency from a global perspective. Takes a detailed look at the important issues affecting the agricultural and food industries today. Full colour throughout.

Download or read book Horticulture: Plants for People and Places, Volume 2 written by Geoffrey R. Dixon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Trilogy explains “What is Horticulture?”. Volume two of Horticulture: Plants for People and Places analyses in depth the scientific, managerial and ecological concepts which underpin Environmental Horticulture. Chapters describe: Horticulture and the Environment, Woody Ornamentals, Herbs and Pharmaceuticals, Urban Greening, Rural Trees, Urban Trees, Turfgrass Science, Interior and External Landscaping, Biodiversity, Climate Change and Organic Production. Each is written by leading international experts. Sustainable use of resources and careful conservation are critically essential for the continuation of life on this Planet. Achieving this is where horticulture, natural flora and fauna and the environment interact in achieving sustainable development. Horticulture is the fundamental partner of ecological and environmental science and provides an understanding of eco-system services. Live plant networks are essential for rural and urban life. They are integral parts of natural communities, the context of historic and modern architecture and a means for rejuvenating cities and uniting communities. Plants provide urban, peri-urban and rural employment, business and tourism opportunities, leisure, rest and relaxation. These facets of Environmental Horticulture are clearly described in this book.
