Book excerpt: Fluctuation solution theory relates derivatives of the thermodynamic properties to spatial integrals of the direct correlation functions. This formalism has been used as the basis for a model of aqueous strong electrolyte solutions which gives both volumetric properties and activities. The main thrust of the work has been the construction of a microscopic model for the direct correlation functions. This model contains the correlations due to the hard core repulsion, long range field interactions, and short range forces. The hard core correlations are modeled with a hard sphere expression derived from the Percus-Yevick theory. The long range field correlations are accounted for by using asymptotic potentials of mean force and the hypernetted chain equation. The short range correlations which include hydration and hydrogen bonding are modeled with a density expansion of the direct correlation function. The model requires six parameters for each ion and two for water. The ionic parameters are valid for all solution and those for water are universal. The model has been used to calculate derivative properties for six 1:1 electrolytes in water at 25c, 1 ATM, the calculated properties have been compared to experimentally determined values in order to confirm the adequacy of the model.

The first is mostly limited to solutes at low concentrations, while FST has no such issue. It is an exact theory that can be applied to any stable solution regardless of the number of components and their co

Book excerpt: Electrolytes and salt solutions are ubiquitous in chemical industry, biology and nature. This unique compendium introduces the elements of the solution properties of ionic mixtures. In addition, it also serves as a bridge to the modern researches into the molecular aspects of uniform and non-uniform charged systems. Notable subjects include the Debye-Hückel limit, Pitzer's formulation, Setchenov salting-out, and McMillan-Mayer scale. Two new chapters on industrial applications — natural gas treating, and absorption refrigeration, are added to make the book current and relevant. This textbook is eminently suitable for undergraduate and graduate students. For practicing engineers without a background in salt solutions, this introductory volume can also be used as a self-study.

Book excerpt: This book deals with density, temperature, velocity and concentration fluctuations in fluids and fluid mixtures. The book first reviews thermal fluctuations in equilibrium fluids on the basis of fluctuating hydrodynamics. It then shows how the method of fluctuating hydrodynamics can be extended to deal with hydrodynamic fluctuations when the system is in a stationary nonequilibrium state. In contrast to equilibrium fluids where the fluctuations are generally short ranged unless the system is close to a critical point, fluctuations in nonequilibrium fluids are always long-ranged encompassing the entire system. The book provides the first comprehensive treatment of fluctuations in fluids and fluid mixtures brought out of equilibrium by the imposition of a temperature and concentration gradient but that are still in a macroscopically quiescent state. By incorporating appropriate boundary conditions in the case of fluid layers, it is shown how fluctuating hydrodynamics affects the fluctuations close to the onset of convection. Experimental techniques of light scattering and shadowgraphy for measuring nonequilibrium fluctuations are elucidated and the experimental results thus far reported in the literature are reviewed. · Systematic exposition of fluctuating hydrodynamics and its applications· First book on nonequilibrium fluctuations in fluids· Fluctuating Boussinesq equations and nonequilibrium fluids· Fluid layers and onset of convection· Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering in fluids· Shadowgraph technique for measuring fluctuations· Fluctuations near hydrodynamic instabilities

This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of statistical thermodynamic molecular theory is fundamental to the appreciation of molecular solutions. This complex subject has been simplified by the authors with down-to-earth presentations of molecular theory. Using the potential distribution theorem (PDT) as the basis, the text provides a discussion of practical theories in conjunction with simulation results. The authors discuss the field in a concise and simple manner, illustrating the text with useful models of solution thermodynamics and numerous exercises. Modern quasi-chemical theories that permit statistical thermodynamic properties to be studied on the basis of electronic structure calculations are given extended development, as is the testing of those theoretical results with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The book is intended for students taking up research problems of molecular science in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, nanotechnology and biotechnology.
