Book excerpt: Many regions in North America are experiencing water shortages, and these conditions are expected to worsen. The next generation of irrigation scheduling applications must therefore be capable of providing operational advice in support of deficit irrigation strategies. However, the theoretical, technical, and practical challenges associated with deficit irrigation scheduling are far more complex than conventional (full) irrigation. This dissertation presents three distinct systems for addressing the analytical challenges of deficit irrigation management. The first section of the dissertation presents a simulation framework for agro-ecological simulation. The objective was to develop a method to enable the assembly of simulation models from previously and independently developed component models. Based on a requirements analysis of existing simulation models we developed the ModCom simulation framework. ModCom provides a set of interface specifications that describe components in a simulation. ModCom also provides implementations of the core simulation services. The framework interfaces use well-defined binary standards and allows developers to implement the interfaces using a broad range of computer languages. The Second section describes the Irrigation Efficiency Model (IEM). IEM explicitly analyzes irrigation efficiency, accounts for spatial variability of soil properties and irrigation uniformity, performs simultaneous scheduling for all fields in the farm, accounts for energy use and its associated costs, and uses both ET and soil moisture measurements to enhance the accuracy of the irrigation schedules. IEM was developed specifically for implementing Deficit Irrigation and therefore includes analyses that go beyond the requirements of conventional irrigation scheduling. The third section describes Irrigation Management Online (IMO), a web application for optimum irrigation management. This system uses IEM to generate and deliver irrigation scheduling recommendations. IMO has been developed specifically to support irrigation management when either water supplies or delivery system capacities are limited. To mitigate the complexities of irrigation constraints the system has been designed so that the irrigation manager is an integral part of the irrigation optimization procedure. The final section outlines some of the key challenges that the next generation of schedulers must overcome in order to meet the needs of agricultural irrigation in an increasingly water short future. In addition, this section will discuss how irrigation advisory programs will need to operate differently in terms of what they do and how they do it.

According to their size, water networks consist of hundreds or thousands of system elements. Moreover, different types of decisions (continuous and discrete) have to be taken in the water management. The networks have to be optimized in terms of topology and operation by targeting a variety of criteria. Criteria may for example be economic, social or ecological ones and may compete with each other. The development of complex model systems and their use for deriving optimal decisions in water management is taking place at a rapid pace. Simulation and optimization methods originating in Operations Research have been used for several decades; usually with very limited direct cooperation with applied mathematics. The research presented here aims at bridging this gap, thereby opening up space for synergies and innovation. It is directly applicable for relevant practical problems and has been carried out in cooperation with utility and dumping companies, infrastructure providers and planning offices. A close and direct connection to the practice of water management has been established by involving application-oriented know-how from the field of civil engineering. On the mathematical side all necessary disciplines were involved, including mixed-integer optimization, multi-objective and facility location optimization, numerics for cross-linked dynamic transportation systems and optimization as well as control of hybrid systems. Most of the presented research has been supported by the joint project „Discret-continuous optimization of dynamic water systems“ of the federal ministry of education and research (BMBF).

The objectives were maximization of expected return and minimization of variance due to random precipitacion. The model is applied to a representative farm in the irrigated area near Ft. Morgan, Colorado. Recent experimental data from field trials on corn at colorado State University were used. An evapotranspiration ET prediction model was developed which reconstruced soil moisture over the season for varying irrigation treatments. Regression analysis was used to determine parameters in production functions relating ET in various time periods to yields. An additive and a multiplicative relation were tested. A dynamic programming model was developed which determined optimal amounts of irrigation at pre-scheduled times for a single crop. The adopted ET prediction model and first the multiplicative and then the additive production function were incorporated into this program. Initiallys the problem is solved with unlimited water available at a pre-determined price. The model is solved again with waater limited in various time periods. The results of this program simulate the situation when the crop competes with other crops for the limeted water supply. Secondary datea were used to determine timings and amounts of irrigation water for various production levels of the other crops considered in the study. The multiple crop case incorporates the results of the single crop model.(...).

In addition, it is expected that world population will increase significantly during the following years. Agriculture is the largest consumer of fresh water, estimated 75%. The optimization of its use is therefore crucial for future. The main objective of irrigation scheduling is to guarantee maximum crop yield while saving significant amounts of water. The main difficulty to determine a correct and optimal irrigation scheduling strategy is due to complexity and variability of the Soil-Plant-Atmosphere continuum. In each field site, this continuous SPA has different patterns as a consequence of environmental conditions, crop, soil hydraulic properties and soil tillage. Several tools and methodologies are employed nowadays to monitor an improve irrigation scheduling. However, they all have advantages and limitations, or, each one is used without considering the information provided by the others, simplifying the system and avoiding information. This thesis aims to improve irrigation scheduling by combining different tools available at the present time. This combination aims to answer different kind of questions when irrigation scheduling in a field site must be defined. For this, each tool has been used and supported by others. In addition, this thesis will discuss when and how these tools might be employed. Firstly, we compare different tools and methodologies used to measure water content in an agriculture field. Specifically, we compared gravimetric measurements and water content sensors measurements with DISPATCH algorithm data. This algorithm is one of several algorithms who estimates soil surface water content using remote sensing data. The main goal was determining if remote sensing data can improve water content data measured by sensors. We found that DISPATCH algorithm is no capable to improve water content sensors measurements. Secondly, we present a methodology where a simulation-optimization problem is solved in order to find an optimal irrigation scheduling strategy. This strategy might guarantee the maximum economic net margin. This methodology has been applied in a real field. The optimal irrigation scheduling of this field is compared with the traditional irrigation scheduling method, based water requirements. Results show that even though the traditional method supplies the volume of water evapotranspired, this methodology of scheduling irrigation is not enough to avoid crop water stress, compromising final crop yield. In this case, optimal irrigation strategy improves the final net margin in comparison the traditional method. We demonstrate that depending on soil properties, optimal irrigation scheduling is different. Thirdly, we improved the irrigation scheduling in a field site where irrigation was applied with the same criteria. In this part of the thesis we employed NDVI remote sensing data, water content sensors and simulation models to determine the optimal irrigation. The improvement is based on management zones delineation with NDVI data. In this case, water content sensors are used to define if each management zone presents different water content patterns and to verify that when the field is divided into different management zones there is a gain in terms of water content uniformity. Finally, an optimal irrigation scheduling calendar is proposed to allow the consultants to take within-season irrigation decisions. Results show that management zones are dynamic during the growing season and the optimal irrigation scheduling might also be dynamic. In addition, we found that the uniform irrigation applied in the entire field, without considering the possible differences in soil properties, produced waterlogging in two management zones, therefore, transpiration decreases in comparison to the others.

The work shows how the transfer coefficients can be recalculated periodically in the course of the system optimization. The theoretical framework for including two additional treatment methods, mechanical re-aeration and flow augmentation via reservoirs is also developed.

Book excerpt: In the context of improving water productivity, there is a growing interest in deficit irrigation, an irrigation practice whereby water supply is reduced below maximum levels and mild stress is allowed with minimal effects on yield. Under conditions of scarce water supply and drought, deficit irrigation can lead to greater economic gains than maximizing yields per unit of water for a given crop; farmers are more inclined to use water more efficiently, and more water-efficient cash crop selection helps optimize returns. However, this approach requires precise knowledge of crop response to water as drought tolerance varies considerably by species, cultivar and stage of growth. The studies present the latest research concepts and involve various practices for deficit irrigation. Both annual and perennial crops were exposed to different levels of water stress, either during a particular growth phase, throughout the whole growing season or in a combination of growth stages. The overall finding, based on the synthesis of the different contributions, is that deficit or regulated-deficit irrigation can be beneficial where appropriately applied. Substantial savings of water can be achieved with little impact on the quality and quantity of the harvested yield. However, to be successful, an intimate knowledge of crop behavior is required, as crop response to water stress varies considerably.
