Book excerpt: Se caracterizo la pesca artesanal de Isla Fuerte, Caribe Colombiano, durante los meses Septiembre a Diciembre del 2007, mediante el registro de datos de la extraccion pesquera diaria de las unidades economicas de pesca que arriban a los principales puertos de desembarco de la isla despues de sus faenas. A partir de la informacion colectada y de las observacion en campo se clasifico la pesca artesanal en tres tipos diferentes: pesca artesanal de sustento, pesca artesanal comercial y pesca artesanal de tiburon; para cada una de los cuales se determinaron los volumenes, abundancias y tallas de las especies registradas, asi mismo los artes de pesca empleados, los caladeros de pesca visitados y la captura por unidad de esfuerzo (CPUE). Adicional a esto se tuvieron en cuenta algunos aspectos biologicos de las especies de tiburon capturadas como Indices biologicos (IGS, IHS y FK) y Habitos troficos.

Book excerpt: La evaluación biológico pesquera de la desembocadura del Canal del Dique realizada a través de encuestas estructuradas de captura durante los meses de enero a octubre de 1994 permitió llevara a cabo un inventario de las especies explotadas con línea de mano, estableciéndose además el esfuerzo pesquero promedio, la CPUE y la producción total estimada durante el período de estudio. El esfuerzo promedio fue de 35 ± 17 canos/día y la captura por unidad de esfuerzo promedio de 7,13 ± 5 kg/canoa/día. Se observaron diferencias marcadas en la CPUES entre el período de mayor influencia del canal (aguas altas) y el de menor aporte de agua dulce (aguas bajas), siendo respectivamente de 4,01 ± 1,7 kg/cano/día y 8,16 ± 8,5 kg/canoa/día. La producción total estimada para el período de estudio fue de 65.468 kg. Se determinó que las especies principalmente explotadas y de mayor interés comercial en el área son Trichiurus lepturus y Elops saurus. Además se estudia la frecuencia de tallas y los principales ítems alimenticios para las especies capturadas. Adicionalmente, se realiza una evaluación limnológica determinando temperatura, salinidad superficial y abundancia de zooplancton.

Book excerpt: In 1971 the International Society of Tropical Ecology and the International Association for Ecology held a meeting on Tropical Ecology, with an emphasis on organic production in New Delhi, India. At this meeting a Working Group on Tropical Ecology was organized, consisting of K. C. Misra (India), F. Malaisse (Zaire), E. Medina (Venezuela) and F. Golley (U.S.A.). The object of this Working Group was to stimulate interaction between tropical ecologists through future scientific meetings and other exchanges and communications. A second meeting of ISTE and INTECOL was held in Caracas, Venezuela in 1973, under the direction of Medina and Golley and sponsored by the Depart ment of Ecology, Institute Venezolano Investigaciones Cientificas (lVIC). The basic structure of the meeting was provided by series of invited papers which considered topics of special interest from both an applied and theoretical view. These included physiological ecology (Pannier), populations (Rabinovich), tropical savannas (Lamotte), rivers (Sioli), estuaries (Rodriguez), and island ecosystems (Mueller-Dombois). Contributed papers considered details of these and other ecological topics, including the application of ecology to human problems. The present volume includes the invited papers listed above and a sampling of contributed papers which together illustrate the trends of research in tropical ecology. The papers show that tropical ecology is a vigorous subject of research. While the papers in this volume do not provide reviews of all the topics of study in tropical ecology, they do present authoritative statements on progress in the major subject in the field.

Current U.S. policy about environmental conflict and scholarly work on environmental security assume direct causal links between population growth, resource scarcity, and violence. This belief, a staple of governmental decision-making during both Clinton administrations and widely held in the environmental security field, depends on particular assumptions about the nature of the state, the role of population growth, and the causes of environmental degradation.The conventional understanding of environmental security, and its assumptions about the relation between violence and the environment, are challenged and refuted in Violent Environments. Chapters by geographers, historians, anthropologists, and sociologists include accounts of ethnic war in Indonesia, petro-violence in Nigeria and Ecuador, wildlife conservation in Tanzania, and "friendly fire" at Russia's nuclear weapons sites. Violent Environments portrays violence as a site-specific phenomenon rooted in local histories and societies, yet connected to larger processes of material transformation and power relations. The authors argue that specific resource environments, including tropical forests and oil reserves, and environmental processes (such as deforestation, conservation, or resource abundance) are constituted by and in part constitute the political economy of access to and control over resources.
