This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brussels, Antwerp Critical Notes on the Royal Museums, at Brussels and Antwerp There are numerous guide-books, catalogues, and histories of the European galleries, but, unfortunately for the gallery visitor, they are either wholly descriptive of obvious facts or they are historical and archaeological about matters somewhat removed from art itself. In them the gist of a picture - its value or meaning as art - is usually passed over in silence. It seems that there is some need of a guide that shall say less about the well-worn saints and more about the man behind the paint-brush; that shall deal with pictures from the painter's point of view, rather than that of the ecclesiastic, the archaeologist, or the literary romancer; that shall have some sense of proportion in the selection and criticism of pictures; that shall have a critical basis for discrimination between the good and the bad; and that shall, for these reasons, be of service to the travelling public as well as to the art student. This series of guide-books attempts to meet these requirements. They deal only with the so-called "old masters." When the old masters came upon the scene, flourished, and ceased to exist may be determined by their spirit as well as by their dates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Botolph's Town and Other Stories Long time ago, there were in England, as well as in many other countries, certain pious men and women who, for their eminent wisdom, charitable works, or lives of purity and usefulness, came to be called Saints. Among these was a Saxon monk, the Abbot of Ikanho, St. Botolph by name, who lived about the middle of the seventh century. Botolph belonged to a noble English family. After having been educated at one of the religious houses in what was then called Belgic Gaul, he came back to England, and begged of King Ethelmund a barren spot on which to build a monastery; and here, on the Witham River, near the eastern coast of England, in what is now called Lincolnshire, he built his priory, and founded a town to which was given the name, St. Botolph's Town. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Belgians at Home There are already many volumes which cover separately and fully all these aspects of the country and its possessions. The present volume deals with Belgium and its people from the point Of view of a rambler who has at various times cycled and travelled many hundreds of miles along its high ways and by-ways, and has sought to learn something of its past history, greatness, and romance, and to see many of its greatest architectural and art treasures in most of its known, and some of its comparatively unknown, towns and villages. It is a record of things seen and impressions gained. An attempt to present within the compass of a single volume of reasonable length the Belgium of the past and of to-day, and something at least of its alluring charm, picturesqueness, and extraordinary interest for the tourist and the student, whether of history, art, or character. Every care has been taken with the spelling of proper names, and to verify dates. But it need not be pointed out to the experienced archaeologist or historian that often these are conflicting. A standard authority has been followed in each case, and the author trusts, therefore, that in this respect there will be very few errors discoverable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belgium and the Belgians The object of the present work is not that of a guide-book, but rather to convey that information respecting Belgium and its people which we look for in vain in the excellent topographical works of Baedeker, Murray, Grant Allen, Ward & Lock, Lindley, and Jean d'Ardenne. In the chapter on "The Holiday Ground of Belgium" the writer has endeavoured to describe faithfully a tour made by him in the summer of 1899 through the Liege district and the Ardennes. He does not profess to have discovered anything new or strange; but as he has carefully avoided describing any place which he has not recently visited, he believes that his narrative may possibly be of use to those who may wish to undertake a similar excursion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's Story of the War, Vol. 2: From the Battle of Mons to the Fall of Antwerp When the young soldier arrives at the barracks he is given three suits of clothes, one of which is his drill dress, another his walking-out dress, and the third his war dress. These clothes he keeps on a shelf above his bed, and he so arranges his garments that the French colours, blue, white, and red, are clearly seen. In summer he rises at 4 a.m., and in winter at 6 a.m., and he goes to bed at 9 p.m. All the year round, except when he is on sentry-go, or has permission to stay out late. Every day the barrack-room is inspected, to see that. The beds are properly made, that the men's clothes are in good order, and that the room is clean and tidy. The little breakfast, which consists of coffee and a roll, is served at 5 a.m.; lunch is eaten at ten o'clock, and dinner at five. The meals usually consist of soup, meat, vegetables, and fruit. On great occa sions wine is supplied, and cigars are handed round. The conscript's pay consists of one sou (a halfpenny) a day, and his tobacco. Some of the men receive money from their parents and friends others have to make shift on the trifling allowance which the Government gives them. Nowhere was the cultivation of architecture more general than in Flan ders. Knowledge of the Middle Ages is so imperfect that little can be written with certainty about the men who designed and built the wondrous cathedrals and guild halls; but it is believed that these superb structures owe the1r origin to a great secret masonic league or guild, bound probably by religious vows, with headquarters in France and the Netherlands, and branches elsewhere in Europe. To a branch of this league are attributed the splendid buildings with which the Netherlands adorned the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. Chief among these buildings were the cathedrals of Flanders and Brabant (motley). Burgher opulence and energy are grandly and vigorously expressed in the secular buildings of these towns. For example, we have the Hall of the Cloth Makers (destroyed in at Ypres; Town Hall at Bruges, 1284; Council House at Bruges, 1377; Council House at Brussels, 1401 - 5 5; the still more magnificent Town Hall at Louvain, belonging to the second half of the fifteenth century; and that at Oudenarde, built in 1527 - (destroyed in 1915) (lubke's History of Art.
