Book Synopsis Coming to Senses by : José Roberto Pellini
Download or read book Coming to Senses written by José Roberto Pellini and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every culture conceives of the senses in different ways, establishing their own models and sensory hierarchies. Despite the importance of the senses in human experience, archaeology has generally neglected the sensory dimension of the material world. In response to this lacuna, the contributions to this volume incorporate all the senses in imaginative scenarios, in order to stimulate new ways of seeing and conceptualising archaeology and bring back the “self” to this science. The international character of the essays brought together here, including researchers and case studies from across the globe, provides a variety of perspectives on this topic from a number of scales of analysis. The book will appeal to a wide range of readers, including academic researchers and the general public concerned with archaeology, history, anthropology, and sociology, and will provide readers with a greater understanding of the dynamics of the senses, the relationship between narratives and societies, and the cultural world.
Book Synopsis The Constitution of the Psychoanalytic Clinic by : Christian Dunker
Download or read book The Constitution of the Psychoanalytic Clinic written by Christian Dunker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed examination of the historical roots of psychoanalysis from ancient Greece to the late nineteenth century, focusing on social practices that were related to the founders of psychoanalytic theory and maintained within contemporary treatment. Alongside the reconstruction of an evolutionary accumulation of healing practices, the book includes linked discussions of current issues pertaining to psychoanalytic treatment and its working structure as elaborated by Freud and Lacan. There are vital political consequences for psychoanalytic practice - here articulated with an acknowledgement of these practical derivations of early pre-psychoanalytic treatments of the soul. The book demonstrates that these are neither mere techniques nor concepts of the world and the human subject, but they concern the way the problem of power is articulated. The historical establishment of psychoanalytical practice becomes legible through analysis of the traces of the elements of a political ontology, an account of the roots of those traces and the elaboration of the conceptual structure of psychoanalysis as theory and treatment, a praxis which maintains its own distinctive identity.

Book Synopsis Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View by : Immanuel Kant
Download or read book Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View written by Immanuel Kant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a footnote to the Preface of his A nthropology Kant gives, if not altogether accurately, the historical background for the publication of this work. The A nthropology is, in effect, his manual for a course of lectures which he gave "for some thirty years," in the winter semesters at the University of Konigsberg. In 1797, when old age forced him to discontinue the course and he felt that his manual would not compete with the lectures themselves, he decided to let the work be published (Ak. VII, 354, 356). The reader will readily see why these lectures were, as Kant says, popular ones, attended by people from other walks of life. In both content and style the Anthropology is far removed from the rigors of the Critiques. Yet the Anthropology presents its own special problems. The student of Kant who struggles through the Critique of Pure Reason is undoubtedly left in some perplexity regarding specific points in it, but he is quite clear as to what Kant is attempting to do in the work. On finishing the Anthropology he may well find himself in just the opposite situation. While its discussions of the functioning of man's various powers are, on the whole, quite lucid and even entertaining, the purpose of the work remains somewhat vague. The questions: what is pragmatic anthropology? what is its relation to Kant's more strictly philosophical works? have not been answered satisfactorily.

Book Synopsis Kant: Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View by : Robert B. Louden
Download or read book Kant: Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View written by Robert B. Louden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-02 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View essentially reflects the last lectures Kant gave for his annual course in anthropology, which he taught from 1772 until his retirement in 1796. The lectures were published in 1798, with the largest first printing of any of Kant's works. Intended for a broad audience, they reveal not only Kant's unique contribution to the newly emerging discipline of anthropology, but also his desire to offer students a practical view of the world and of humanity's place in it. With its focus on what the human being 'as a free-acting being makes of himself or can and should make of himself,' the Anthropology also offers readers an application of some central elements of Kant's philosophy. This volume offers an annotated translation of the text by Robert B. Louden, together with an introduction by Manfred Kuehn that explores the context and themes of the lectures.
Book Synopsis Wundt and the Philosophical Foundations of Psychology by : Saulo de Freitas Araujo
Download or read book Wundt and the Philosophical Foundations of Psychology written by Saulo de Freitas Araujo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-23 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reassesses the seminal work of Wilhelm Wundt by discussing the history and philosophy of psychology. It traces the pioneering theorist’s intellectual development and the evolution of psychology throughout his career. The author draws on little-known sources to situate psychological concepts in Wundt’s philosophical thought and address common myths and misconceptions relating to Wundt’s ideas. The ideas presented in this book show why Wundt’s work remains relevant in this era of ongoing mind/brain debate and interest continues in the links between psychology and philosophy. Featured topics include: Theoretical and philosophical foundations of Wundt’s early work in scientific psychology. Wundt’s conception of scientific philosophy in relation to his theory of knowledge. The epistemological dimensions of Wundt’s final project in scientific psychology. Wundt and the Philosophical Foundations of Psychology is a valuable resource for researchers, professors, and graduate students in cognitive and related psychology and philosophy disciplines.
