This book was released on 1978 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Continental Renaissance, 1500-1600 is concerned with the century of Ronsard and Ariosto, Rabelais and Machiavelli, Erasmus, Luther and Calvin. It was a period in which new ideas and new forms in art burgeoned to an unprecedented extent, and in which the modern world began to take recognizable shape. Nevertheless, the world of the sixteenth century is remote from ours in many ways and its literature cannot be fully understood unless the reader knows something of its historical background and of the climate of ideas in which it was produced. This information the volume is designed to supply. It is divided into six main sections: The Cultural and Historical Background, Poetry, Drama, Prose Fiction, The Literature of Ideas and Manners, and Popular Literature". --Publisher.

Book Synopsis Devotional Music in the Iberian World, 1450-1800 by : Tess Knighton
Download or read book Devotional Music in the Iberian World, 1450-1800 written by Tess Knighton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the fifteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth century, devotional music played a fundamental role in the Iberian world. Songs in the vernacular, usually referred to by the generic name of 'villancico', but including forms as varied as madrigals, ensaladas, tonos, cantatas or even oratorios, were regularly performed at many religious feasts in major churches, royal and private chapels, convents and in monasteries. These compositions appear to have progressively fulfilled or supplemented the role occupied by the Latin motet in other countries and, as they were often composed anew for each celebration, the surviving sources vastly outnumber those of Latin compositions; they can be counted in tens of thousands. The close relationship with secular genres, both musical, literary and performative, turned these compositions into a major vehicle for dissemination of vernacular styles throughout the Iberian world. This model of musical production was also cultivated in Portugal and rapidly exported to the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in America and Asia. In many cases, the villancico repertory represents the oldest surviving source of music produced in these regions, thus affording it a primary role in the construction of national identities. The sixteen essays in this volume explore the development of devotional music in the Iberian world in this period, providing the first broad-based survey of this important genre.

Book Synopsis The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola by : Terence O'Reilly
Download or read book The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola written by Terence O'Reilly and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola: Contexts, Sources, Reception, Terence O’Reilly examines the historical, theological and literary contexts in which the Exercises took shape. The collected essays have as their common theme the early history of the Spiritual Exercises, and the interior life of Ignatius Loyola to which they give expression. The traditional interpretation of the Exercises was shaped by writings composed in the late sixteenth century, reflecting the preoccupations of the Counter-Reformation world in which they were composed. The Exercises, however, belong, in their origins, to an earlier period, before the Council of Trent, and the full recognition of this fact, and of its implications, has confronted modern scholars with fresh questions about the sources, evolution, and reception of the work.
