Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers on Anthropometry The writer has adopted the above title for this paper since his chief purpose, at this time, is to call attention to the number and variety of the publications which relate to anthropometry in the United States, without attempting a complete or critical analysis of any of them. It is also proper to note that the appended Provisional List includes several titles of books and articles which have been published in Europe by American writers, and a few titles of articles relating to anthropometry in America by European writers. In this paper the term anthropometry is used in the sense originally attributed to it by Quetelet, which includes the measure of the different faculties of the human being; although anthropometrical study in the United States has been pursued, for the most part, for the sake of determining the physical proportions of the body and its parts. Considered as a whole, the American literature on anthropometry consists largely of descriptive and tabulated reports of the results reached by individual observers in comparatively narrow and disconnected fields of investigation. A very considerable amount of material has been amassed, but much of it is so heterogeneous as to remind one of a heap of nuggets of crude ores of different kinds, which, to yield true metal, must needs be sorted, roasted, and refined. Darwin Humphreys, who at that time, having conceived the idea of constructing his Angulator System, we asked him: In what way do you purpose working out an improvement on the Wampen science? Christopher (6) later reinvestigated Porter's conclusion and confirmed it. Smedley in 1899, further demonstrated that the evolutionary ideal child stood somewhere above the average in each measurement, and that the more advanced pupils stood higher in the physical measurements than the backward ones. In 1900, Smedley (21) confirmed his own results of the previous year and from data divested of the in uence of age and sex showed the existence of a direct correlation between physical condition and mental capacity, concluding that children physically superior were superior in school efficiency, and that this held true for all of his measure ments. Gratsianofi (13) and Sack in Russia, and macdonald Beyer and debusk America, also found successful children larger than unsuccessful. Galton (9) on the other hand, with adults, found no connection between success in literary examinations (at Cambridge) and stature, weight, strength, or breathing capacity. West too, found an inverse relation between brightness and size, while Gilbert (10, 11) found no relationship. The living man is the first object which demands our investigation. Carl Vogt. The study of Anthropometry, or the proportions of the human body, is not modern, but reaches back to the remote civilization of India, when we find a treatise called Silpi Sastri, which investi gated the outline of the body by dividing it into 480 parts. In later times the Greeks proposed a Canon or model in the shape of a statue called Doryphoros, which was claimed to be the pattern for the human figure. Still later the mathematical law was applied to the human body, an entirely artificial system hence we obtain the terms cubit, hand-breadth, ell and so on. An Italian sculptor, Alberti, proposed a module of one foot in height, which was divided into ten degrees and minutes, as a standard for the proportions of the human body. In 1854 a German, Carus, proposed an anatomical basis for determining human bodily proportions, assuming the hand length for the unit, and the adult vertebral column of 24 free vertebrae, to be the key to these proportions. But the father of Anthropometry is Baron Quetelet of Belgium, who, in the middle part of the present century, offered the actual measurements of the body and the means and averages deduced from them as the true and scientific way of ascertaining human proportions; adopting the Baconian method of reasoning from the effect to the cause, from the concrete to the abstract. Of course in the Divine mind there is the ideal or plan not only of the great groups of animals but of man also. And this idea is not given to us as complete and clear as the human architect furnishes the plans and specifications of the house he will build. We are left to study and work out what this plan may be. There is thus furnished to us the joy and stimulus of new discovery, and the impulse of advanced knowledge.
