Book excerpt: Rob was an ordinary college sophomore when a pitch-back portal opened up on campus and tried to kidnap his best friend. An act of heroism resulted in him being taken instead, and he was rewarded for his efforts by being transported to another world with nothing but a sword and the clothes on his back. On the first day, he almost died. On the second day, he almost died. On the third, he began to notice a worrying trend. And almost died Whether he encounters wolves, cliffs, dungeons, monsters, or diseases, every day is a struggle to survive. The one advantage he has is his newfound ability to gain Levels and Stats, making himself stronger in order to survive the hostile lands that he was unceremoniously dumped into. He'll have to gain knowledge of the innerworkings of the world and its magic - progressing both his strength and his knowledge - in order to stay alive long enough to get revenge on whoever kidnapped him away from everything he knew and loved. Overcoming the wilds is just the first step in his journey; the locals aren't fond of humans, and discovering the dark past behind this new world's history of war and strife changes everything. As far as isekai adventures go, Rob drew the short straw in many ways, but it'll take more than danger at every corner to keep him down. He'll carve out a place in this world with his bare hands if necessary. He'll survive, and then he'll thrive. Whether anyone wants him to or not. -- An Outcast On Another World puts a great focus on story and characterization, making it perfect for fans of traditional fantasy stories, while still including plenty of skills, stats, classes, and progression for LitRPG-lovers to enjoy. The LitRPG elements are incorporated into the main story to construct a cohesive world that's easy to immerse yourself in. Rob's progression is weak to strong, and victories aren't handed to him on a silver platter. No matter how powerful he gets, mid-combat ingenuity is essential to achieving victory. An Outcast In Another World has dark elements to its narrative, but I've included appropriate humor as a balance, and many readers have told me that some parts made them burst out laughing while other parts tugged at their heartstrings. I truly believe that I've constructed a memorable fantasy RPG story that all types can love, and that you'll enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Book excerpt: Georgia Peach Award Nominee • Florida Teens Read Award Nominee • ABC Best Books for Young Readers • Bank Street College Best Children’s Books of the Year • A Junior Library Guild Selection • Hugo & Locus award finalist In Other Lands is an exhilarating novel from bestselling author Sarah Rees Brennan about surviving four years in the most unusual of schools - friendship, falling in love, diplomacy, and finding your own place in the world — even if it means giving up your phone. Excerpt: The Borderlands aren’t like anywhere else. Don’t try to smuggle a phone or any other piece of technology over the wall that marks the Border — unless you enjoy a fireworks display in your backpack. (Ballpoint pens are okay.) There are elves, harpies, and — best of all as far as Elliot is concerned — mermaids. "What’s your name?" "Serene." "Serena?" Elliot asked. "Serene," said Serene. "My full name is Serene-Heart-in-the-Chaos-of-Battle." Elliot’s mouth fell open. "That is badass." Elliot? Who’s Elliot? Elliot is thirteen years old. He’s smart and just a tiny bit obnoxious. Sometimes more than a tiny bit. When his class goes on a field trip and he can see a wall that no one else can see, he is given the chance to go to school in the Borderlands. It turns out that on the other side of the wall, classes involve a lot more weaponry and fitness training and fewer mermaids than he expected. On the other hand, there’s Serene-Heart-in-the-Chaos-of-Battle, an elven warrior who is more beautiful than anyone Elliot has ever seen, and then there’s her human friend Luke: sunny, blond, and annoyingly likeable. There are lots of interesting books. There’s even the chance Elliot might be able to change the world. Chapter illustrations by Casey Nowak.

Book excerpt: Fantasy writing, like literature in general, provides a powerful vehicle for challenging the status quo. Via symbolism, imagery and supernaturalism, fantasy constructs secondary-world narratives that both mirror and critique the political paradigms of our own world. This critical work explores the role of the portal in fantasy, investigating the ways in which magical nexus points and movement between worlds are used to illustrate real-world power dynamics, especially those impacting women and children. Through an examination of high and low fantasy, fairy tales, children's literature, the Gothic, and science fiction, the portal is identified as a living being, place or magical object of profound metaphorical and cultural significance.

Emergencies are what she’s paid for. When an earthquake tremor—almost unheard of in this part of the world—spooks the stable’s most valuable stallion, Lynn decides to ride him home through Gordath Wood rather than try to load him into a van. They never get there. Something has happened in Gordath Wood. The police think they have a murderer on their hands, but the truth is stranger than that. Lynn has stumbled into a hole between worlds, and now finds herself in a world at war, in a medieval society that doesn’t have much use for women. Someone she needs to keep herself alive long enough to figure out who the good guys are—and to find a way home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sweeping study of fantasy literature offers “new and often surprising readings of works both familiar and obscure. A fine critical work” (Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts). Transcending arguments over the definition of fantasy literature, Rhetorics of Fantasy introduces a provocative new system of classification for the genre. Drawing on nearly two hundred examples of modern fantasy, author Farah Mendlesohn identifies four categories—portal-quest, immersive, intrusion, and liminal—that arise out of the relationship of the protagonist to the fantasy world. Using these sets, Mendlesohn argues that the author's stylistic decisions are then shaped by the inescapably political demands of the category in which they choose to write. Each chapter covers at least twenty books in detail, ranging from nineteenth-century fantasy and horror to some of the best works in the contemporary field. Mendlesohn discusses works by more than one hundred authors, including Lloyd Alexander, Peter Beagle, Marion Zimmer Bradley, John Crowley, Stephen R. Donaldson, Stephen King, C. S. Lewis, Gregory Maguire, Robin McKinley, China Miéville, Suniti Namjoshi, Philip Pullman, J. K. Rowling, Sheri S. Tepper, J. R. R. Tolkien, Tad Williams, and many others.

No other scientist has traveled to other dimensions, except military volunteers. They told me to expect the unexpected. Book excerpt: Bounty hunter on medieval planet required. Popular quest, sells fast, book early to avoid disappointment. No experience necessary. That was basically how the ad enticed Troy Cooper into signing up for The Stillwater Project, Earth’s finest – and only – purveyor of portal vacations. In his head, of course, nothing could possibly go wrong; he played Fantasy VR games all the time, so the real thing was surely just a natural progression of that. A chance to level-up, even. A long weekend away, on a medieval planet, kicking butt and drinking ale. No big deal. And besides, portal tourism was an actual thing these days – with billboards and everything – so it had to be safe, right? Well, as it turns out, not so much. Because one of the things Troy didn’t really consider was the fact that portal quests are absolutely not the same as playing online games. Not by a long shot, in fact. No second chances, no respawning at the start of a level, and definitely no Invincibility spells to conveniently get his backside out of trouble at the last possible second. Just a very real chance of death. Permanent death. Oh, and a couple of the other things he didn’t consider? Firstly, his online avatar might have ninja-skills, but his real-life body is just a little too out-of-shape to be a bounty hunter. And secondly, ale doesn’t really taste that great. So, join Troy and his gaming friends as they step through the portal for their first – and possibly last – adventure on magical Vangura, where everything that happens along the way may – or may not – be part of the quest they paid for. And remember, when it comes to being a bounty hunter on a medieval planet, it doesn’t really matter what the billboards say… …there’s no such thing as no experience necessary! The Stillwater Project is a standalone story set in the world of the Portal Hunter Chronicles, an original new series that’s perfect for fans of Westworld, Game of Thrones and Stargate.

Just when he believes his sanity might be next, he's presented with an opportunity that sounds utterly unbelievable. The offer on the table is to become a guardian of a Portal, a doorway to another world. But there's a twist - he must keep it a secret. Portals, it turns out, are alive in some way. They possess sentience and dictate their own set of rules that guardians must follow, under the penalty of death. As Jack delves deeper into this enigmatic role, he uncovers remarkable benefits that he's not willing to jeopardize by disregarding the rules. Along this extraordinary journey, he learns that his old landlord, the elusive Mr. Peebody, had been a guardian for years, amassing his wealth through the Portals. Now, Jack inherits that legacy, with the excitement of boundless opportunities. The only catch? Survival, because the world on the other side of the Portal is a far cry from Earth's safety.
