Book Synopsis The First Poems in English by : Michael Alexander
Download or read book The First Poems in English written by Michael Alexander and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2008-05-29 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of the earliest poems in English comprises works from an age in which verse was not written down, but recited aloud and remembered. Heroic poems celebrate courage, loyalty and strength, in excerpts from Beowulf and in The Battle of Brunanburgh, depicting King Athelstan’s defeat of his northern enemies in 937 AD, while The Wanderer and The Seafarer reflect on exile, loss and destiny. The Gnomic Verses are proverbs on the natural order of life, and the Exeter Riddles are witty linguistic puzzles. Love elegies include emotional speeches from an abandoned wife and separated lovers, and devotional poems include a vision of Christ’s cross in The Dream of the Rood, and Caedmon’s Hymn, perhaps the oldest poem in English, speaking in praise of God.

Download or read book Poems from Korea written by Peter H. Lee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Koreans, according to the Chinese chronicles, are ‘the people who enjoy singing and dancing’ and who regaled their gods with dance and song. Since then poetry has been an essential part of Korean life and has been regarded as the highest of the arts. In this first comprehensive anthology of Korean poetry in English, first published in 1974, Peter Lee has selected and translated a wide variety of poems ranging from the Silla Dynasty in 57 BC to the middle of the twentieth century. The poems chosen reflect not only the native Korean tradition, but also the great tradition of Chinese poetry. They often possess a deep lyrical quality, many are rich in religious overtones or derive their beauty from contemplation of nature and through many of the poems runs the feeling of the closeness of Korean life to the earth.

Book Synopsis Deep Minds Anonymous by : Madiha Batool
Download or read book Deep Minds Anonymous written by Madiha Batool and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep Minds Anonymous by Madiha is a thought provoking debut collection of poetry, poetic prose and quotes. Her words aim to bring women goddesses to light and appreciate their beauty that is overlooked . The women who so often go through the shadows of darkness and still fight like brave warriors, conquering over the battles of life. The women who endure so much and get so little admiration and love for all that they are and for all that they have endured in life. Those Brave Goddesses should be celebrated and that's what many of her poems endeavor to achieve. Her soulful poetry aims to touch the hearts and penetrate through the very souls of her readers because poetry doesn't have to rhyme; it only has to touch one in all the places where hands can't reach. She believes in penning down words which hold the magical power to cure and heal the deepest of cuts. For Madiha, words can change one's life; they have the ability to make one rise from the ashes of their own life. She wishes to inspire her readers through inspirational poems and quotes to become who they want to be in life. Her words hope to arouse and motivate her readers to rise like a sun and shine like a moon. Her mind runs deep; thoughts run wild inside her head and the only escape they can find is poetry, words that can no longer stay caged inside force their way onto paper and into people's heart.

Book Synopsis Everywhere and Nowhere by : Mark Vareschi
Download or read book Everywhere and Nowhere written by Mark Vareschi and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating analysis of anonymous publication centuries before the digital age Everywhere and Nowhere considers the ubiquity of anonymity and mediation in the publication and circulation of eighteenth-century British literature—before the Romantic creation of the “author”—and what this means for literary criticism. Anonymous authorship was typical of the time, yet literary scholars and historians have been generally unable to account for it as anything more than a footnote or curiosity. Mark Vareschi shows the entangled relationship between mediation and anonymity, revealing the nonhuman agency of the printed text. Drawing richly on quantitative analysis and robust archival work, Vareschi brings together philosophy, literary theory, and media theory in a trenchant analysis, uncovering a history of textual engagement and interpretation that does not hinge on the known authorial subject. In discussing anonymous poetry, drama, and the novel along with anonymously published writers such as Daniel Defoe, Frances Burney, and Walter Scott, he unveils a theory of mediation that renews broader questions about agency and intention. Vareschi argues that textual intentionality is a property of nonhuman, material media rather than human subjects alone, allowing the anonymous literature of the eighteenth century to speak to contemporary questions of meaning in the philosophy of language. Vareschi closes by exploring dubious claims about the death of anonymity and the reexplosion of anonymity with the coming of the digital. Ultimately, Everywhere and Nowhere reveals the long history of print anonymity so central to the risks and benefits of the digital culture.
