The primary purpose of this study is to produce a framework that will provide a clearly stated and commonly shared understanding of what the subject authority data/record/file aims to provide information about, and the expectation of what such data should achieve in terms of answering user needs.

Book Synopsis Florida by : Apuleius

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been growing interest in Apuleius' works. Notably his famous novel Metamorphoses and his speeches are increasingly appreciated as the special products of a Second Sophist writing in Latin. In the Florida, a collection of 23 excerpts of speeches, we have a unique example of Roman demonstrative rhetoric. In the text we see Apuleius performing before great audiences, and even in the theatre of Carthage. He delivers speeches on topics as diverse as the eye of the eagle, the inventions of Hippias, or the distinctive features of the parrot. The speaker's wide literary talents, his education and health, and his excellent relations with Carthage and the audience at large, are all put on display with manifest pride. This makes the Florida an indispensable text for anyone interested in second century Latin literature, Second Sophistic, culture and education in Roman Africa, or the author Apuleius. A modern commentary on this brilliant collection has been a desideratum in Apuleian scholarship for a long time. Vincent Hunink has now edited the Florida with an extensive English commentary, in which the literary and rhetorical features of the text are highlighted. Particular attention is paid to the strategies of the speaker and to his exquisite, extravagant style, full of rare or newly coined words and richly adorned with effects of sound and rhythm. Each of the 23 fragments is given a separate introduction, followed by a detailed commentary. The new edition enables readers to gain a better understanding of Apuleius as the great sophist and showman that he was. The volume contains an introduction, a Latin text (based on Helm's Teubner text, but with numerous returns to the text of the manuscripts), a commentary (150 pages), bibliography and indices.

Book excerpt: The volume theme is the distinctiveness of Jesuits and their ministries that was discussed at the first International Symposium on Jesuit Studies held at Boston College's Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies in June 2015. It explores the quidditas Jesuitica, or the specifically Jesuit way(s) of proceeding in which Jesuits and their colleagues operated from historical, geographical, social, and cultural perspectives. The collection poses a question whether there was an essential core of distinctive elements that characterized the way in which Jesuits lived their religious vocation and conducted their various works and how these ways of proceeding were lived out in the various epochs and cultures in which Jesuits worked over four and a half centuries; what changed and adapted itself to different times and situations, and what remained constant, transcending time and place, infusing the apostolic works and lives of Jesuits with the charism at the source of the Society of Jesus's foundation and development. Thanks to generous support of the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies at Boston College, this volume is available in Open Access.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the dawn of the early modern period around 1400 until the eighteenth century, Latin was still the European language and its influence extended as far as Asia and the Americas. At the same time, the production of Latin writing exploded thanks to book printing and new literary and cultural dynamics. Latin also entered into a complex interplay with the rising vernacular languages. This Handbook gives an accessible survey of the main genres, contexts, and regions of Neo-Latin, as we have come to call Latin writing composed in the wake of Petrarch (1304-74). Its emphasis is on the period of Neo-Latin's greatest cultural relevance, from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Its chapters, written by specialists in the field, present individual methodologies and focuses while retaining an introductory character. The Handbook will be valuable to all readers wanting to orientate themselves in the immense ocean of Neo-Latin literature and culture. It will be particularly helpful for those working on early modern languages and literatures as well as to classicists working on the culture of ancient Rome, its early modern reception and the shifting characteristics of post-classical Latin language and literature. Political, social, cultural and intellectual historians will find much relevant material in the Handbook, and it will provide a rich range of material to scholars researching the history of their respective geographical areas of interest.

Queens, acting in their own right, and female regents, acting on behalf of their male relatives, governed much of Western Europe. Yet even as women ruled—and ruled effectively—their right to do so was hotly contested. Men’s voices have long dominated this debate, but the recovery of texts by women now allows their voices, long silenced, to be heard once again. Debating Women, Politics, and Power in Early Modern Europe is a study of texts and textual production in the construction of gender, society, and politics in the early modern period. Jansen explores the “gynecocracy” debate and the larger humanist response to the challenge posed by female sovereignty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christine de Pizan (ca. 1364–ca. 1431) has long been recognized as France’s first professional woman of letters, and interest in her voluminous and wide-ranging corpus has been steadily rising for decades. During the tumultuous later years of the Hundred Years’ War, Christine’s lone but strong feminine voice could be heard defending women, expounding the highest ideals for good governance, and lamenting France’s troubled times alongside her own personal trials. In The Mutability of Fortune, Christine fuses world history with autobiography to demonstrate mankind’s subjugation to the ceaselessly changing, and often cruel, whims of Fortune. Now, for the first time, this poem is accessible to an English-speaking audience, further expanding our appreciation of this ground-breaking woman author and her extraordinary body of work.
