Book excerpt: Extension of the Standard model can enhance the interactions between four vector bosons, so the couplings deviate from their predicted value due to new quartic-gauge-boson interactions. Searches for those deviations are model-independent and cover a wide range of possible new physics. This thesis describes the measurement of exclusive production of W-boson pairs and the search for WW\gamma\gamma anomalous quartic gauge couplings at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using a data set corresponding to 20.2 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS detector in 2012. This analysis considers the W+W- decay modes leading to e\mu leptons. At the LHC, exclusive interactions are characterized by the absence of additional activity in the vicinity of interaction vertices. A technique based on tracks was developed to select the exclusive event candidates. The technique accepts approximately 60% of the signal, while eliminates most of the background due to suppression by 3--4 orders of magnitude. Book excerpt: An analysis probing for the standard model production of three electroweak vector bosons, WV$\gamma$ with V = W or Z gauge boson, is presented. The W boson decays leptonically to an electron or muon, or their respective antiparticle, paired with the appropriate neutrino. The second boson V decays hadronically into two jets, and additionally a photon is required in the event. The data analyzed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.6~fb$^{-1}$ and 2.3~fb$^{-1}$ from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8~TeV and 13~TeV, respectively, collected in 2012 and 2015 by the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The event selection criteria used in these analyses yields 322 and 46 observed events in data in 2012 and 2015, respectively, while the estimated background yield from theoretical predictions is 342.1~$\pm$~22.2 and 54.3~$\pm$~17.7. These observations are consistent with the standard model next-to-leading order QCD predictions. Given the limitation in statistics to measure the cross section for this production process, an upper limit of 3.4 times the standard model predictions is made at a 95\% confidence level for WV$\gamma$ with photon $p_{T}$ greater than 30~GeV and absolute pseudorapidity less than 1.44. Physics beyond the standard model, such as anomalous couplings between the gauge bosons at the quartic vertex, may lead to enhancement in the number of WV$\gamma$ events produced within high energy collisions. Such enhancements can be observed in kinematic distributions, particularly in the higher energy regions. No evidence of anomalous WW$\gamma\gamma$ and WWZ$\gamma$ quartic gauge boson couplings is found, while 95\% confidence level upper limits are obtained for various couplings.

The major goals of such experiments will be the confirmation of the Standard Model (SM) predictions and the search for signals of new physics. We review our current theoretical understanding of anomalous trilinear gauge-boson self interactions. If the energy scale of the new physics is[approx] 1 TeV, these low energy anomalous couplings are expected to be no larger than[Omicron](10[sup -2]). Constraints from high precision measurements at LEP and low energy charged and neutral current processes are critically reviewed.

Pre-LHC measurements will not probe these coupling parameters to precision better than O(10−1). The LHC should be sensitive to better than O(10−2), while a future NLC should achieve sensitivity of O(10−3) to O(10−4) for center of mass energies ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 TeV.

Since then, extensive investigations have been carried out to unravel the properties of the Higgs boson and understand its interactions with other fundamental particles. Monte Carlo simulations play an important role in studies of particle physics. They generate theoretical predictions and can be compared with experimental data to test our understanding of physics. In this dissertation, the anomalous Higgs boson coupling to vector bosons was implemented in VBFNLO for Higgs boson plus three jets via VBF at the next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy. I present results for a number of collider observables that are sensitive to the CP structure, whether in different CP scenarios and in the Standard Model. I also investigate the effects of NLO multijet merging and NLO QCD corrections matched to a parton shower on selected observables through the framework provided by Herwig 7.

The search is performed using events containing a W boson that decays leptonically and a W or Z boson whose decay products are merged into a single reconstructed jet. The data, collected at sqrt(s) =8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19 inverse femtobarns. No evidence for anomalous triple gauge couplings is found and the following 95% confidence level limits are set on their values: lambda ([-0.011,0.011]), Delta kappa[gamma] ([-0.044,0.063]), and Delta g[1,Z] ([-0.0087,0.024]). These limits are also translated into their effective field theory equivalents: c[WWW]/ Lambda^2, ([-2.7,2.7] TeV^{-2}), c[B]/ Lambda^2, ([-14,17] TeV^{-2}), and c[W]/ Lambda^2, ([-2.0,5.7] TeV^{-2}).

It is widely assumed, however, that the SM is only a low energy approximation of a more general theory. Therefore, any significant deviation from the SM predictions yields information on the nature of a more fundamental theory. Production of WZ pairs is the least studied diboson process within the SM, as it is a charged final state and can only be produced at hadron colliders. A detailed study of this process probes the electroweak sector of the SM. In addition, searches for new phenomena in the production of heavy gauge boson pairs are interesting, as many extensions of the SM predict 1-4 additional heavy gauge bosons that can decay into a WZ boson pairs.
