Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 23 articles and a prefatory chapter, this is the largest volume in the series to date. Topics range from climate change and geological aspects of public health to the application of quantum mechanics in geochemistry. The topics of each volume in the series now span well beyond the solid-Earth and planetary disciplines that previously dominated the series, with articles on subjects of immediate societal relevance, such as the articles on climate change in the past 200 years found in this volume. Chapters reflect current work in Earth science's efforts to provide information on the geological past, and developments in geophysical methods. Specific topics covered include the Aral Sea disaster, microprobe monazite geochronology, microsampling and isotopic analysis of igneous rocks, the crustal dichotomy on Mars, and the tectonics and climate of the Southern Central Andes. Material is illustrated with full-color images, diagrams, and tables. Jeanloz is affiliated with the University of California-Berkeley.

Download or read book The Earth written by Minoru Ozima and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-12 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear understanding of the Earth's past evolution can provide the key to its possible future development. The Earth: Its Birth and Growth explores the evolution of the Earth over 4.6 billion years using basic reasoning and simple illustrations to help explain the underlying physical and chemical principles and major processes involved. Fully updated and revised, this rigorous but accessible second edition includes three completely new chapters. It incorporates exciting developments in isotope geology, placing results within a wider framework of Earth evolution and plate tectonics. Some background in physics and chemistry is assumed, but basic theories and processes are explained concisely in self-contained sections. Key research papers and review articles are fully referenced. This book is ideal as supplementary reading for undergraduate and graduate students in isotope geochemistry, geodynamics, plate tectonics and planetary science. It also provides an enjoyable overview of Earth's evolution for professional scientists and general readers.

Book Synopsis The Late Eocene Earth by : Christian Koeberl
Download or read book The Late Eocene Earth written by Christian Koeberl and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2009 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Late Eocene and the Eocene-Oligocene (E-O) transition mark the most profound oceanographic and climatic changes of the past 50 million years of Earth history, with cooling beginning in the middle Eocene and culminating in the major earliest Oligocene Oi-1 isotopic event. The Late Eocene is characterized by an accelerated global cooling, with a sharp temperature drop near the E-O boundary, and significant stepwise floral and faunal turnovers. These global climate changes are commonly attributed to the expansion of the Antarctic ice cap following its gradual isolation from other continental masses. However, multiple extraterrestrial bolide impacts, possibly related to a comet shower that lasted more than 2 million years, may have played an important role in deteriorating the global climate at that time. This book provides an up-to-date review of what happened on Earth at the end of the Eocene Epoch.
