Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1800, Vol. 2 Sir - I have the honor herewith to submit to you the fourth annual report of this Department, for the year ending June 30, 1890. In presenting to you this report, it affords me pleasure to be able to state that there has been great improvement in many of the mines during the past year. The coal trade during the year has been dull through out the State, owing to the open winter. The lead and zinc industries have been much extended, and were never in a more prosperous condition. This report affords special information as to the physical characteristics and mechanical equipments of each mine; methods or mining; statistics of employes; production and value of mineral output; record of accidents and measures to prevent them; opening of new mines; closing of exhausted mines; the number of strikes and their final settlement.
