The authors have worked intensively on Bulgarian myrmecofauna for the last 10 years. The Bulgarian myrmecofauna currently comprises 163 species from 40 genera and 6 subfamilies. The species list accounts synonyms and the respective publications they were used in, as well as all known localities in Bulgaria. Known localities are grouped by geographical regions and maps with concrete localities or regions for each species are provided. The conservation status of threatened ant species is discussed. The catalogue of Bulgarian ants may be of interest to myrmecologists, ecologists, biogeographers, conservationists and any zoological library.

Book Synopsis Advances in Hemipterology by : Alexi Popov
Download or read book Advances in Hemipterology written by Alexi Popov and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hemiptera (true bugs, cicadas, leafhoppers, planthoppers, aphids, scale insects, psyllids) are among the most numerous and diverse in morphology, biology, ecology and behavior insect groups, with vital ecosystems. Many of them are important in the base of the food chain. Others have economic significance as pests on fruit trees, vines, greenhouse crops and other agrocoenoses. Invasive alien species are the second most important cause of biodiversity loss in Europe and many of them belong to Hemiptera. This special issue of ZooKeys includes a collection of 26 papers presented during the 6th European Hemiptera Congress, which was held at Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria from 25th to 29th June 2012. Leading Hemiptera experts from 26 countries in four continents took part at the congress. The discussions were focused on general aspects of Hemiptera studies treating faunistics and biogeography of the Mediterranean Basin and Europe more generally as well as on taxonomy and phylogeny of Cicadomorpha, Fulgoromorpha, Heteroptera, Aphidoidea and Psylloidea; complex application of ecological, acoustic, genetic, palaeontological and behavioral methods; applied research and pest control. This special issue will be of great value for anyone interested in the biology of Hemiptera in general and of certain groups in particular, stimulating future research on this interesting group of insects.
Book Synopsis Fungi in vegetation science by : W. Winterhoff
Download or read book Fungi in vegetation science written by W. Winterhoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers will perhaps be surprised to find a volume about fungi within a handbook of vegetation science. Although fungi traditionally feature in textbooks on botany, at least since Whittaker (1969), they have mostly been categorised as an independent kingdom of organisms or, in contrast to the animal and plant kingdom, as probionta together with algae and protozoa. More relevant for ecology than the systematic separation of fungi from plants is the different lifestyle of fungi which, in contrast to most plants, live as parasites, saprophytes or in symbiosis. Theoretical factors aside, there are also practical methodological considerations which favour the distinction between fungal and plant communities, as has been shown for example by Dörfelt (1974). Despite their special position the coenology of fungi has been dealt with in the handbook of vegetation science. It would be wrong to conclude that we underestimate the important differences between fungal and plant communities. The reasons for including the former are that mycocoenology developed from phytocoenology, the similarity of the methods and concepts still employed today and the close correlation between fungi and plants in biocoenoses.

Book Synopsis Geodynamics and Ore Deposit Evolution in Europe by : D. Blundell
Download or read book Geodynamics and Ore Deposit Evolution in Europe written by D. Blundell and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2006-02-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new synthesis of the major metallogenic provinces of Europe and the geodynamic processes involved that can lead to the formation of world-class ore deposits. It represents the culmination of a 5-year research programme, GEODE, set up by the European Science Foundation, that brought together researchers across Europe from a wide range of disciplines into collaborative research projects. They focused on five metallogenic provinces across Europe; the Precambrian Fennoscandian Shield, the Upper Palaeozoic Urals, the Variscides of France and SW Iberia, the Alpine–Balkan–Carpathian–Dinaride belt and sediment-hosted deposits of Europe. Because of the long and well-known tectonic history of Europe and the diversity of ore deposits, linkages between geodynamics and ore deposit evolution have been established and new insights into mineralizing fluids and ore formation processes have been gained. Presented as a set of individual review papers and a final synthesis, this book offers a coherent and structured appraisal of geodynamics and metallogeny in Europe, with valuable lessons for mineral exploration and research throughout the world.

Book Synopsis Practical Applications of Medical Geology by : Malcolm Siegel
Download or read book Practical Applications of Medical Geology written by Malcolm Siegel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume provides a framework for integrating methods and information drawn from geological and medical sciences and provides case studies in medical geology to illustrate the usefulness of this framework for crafting environmental and public health policies related to natural materials. The relevance of medical geology research to policy decisions is a topic rarely discussed, and this volume attempts to be a unique source for researchers and policy makers in the field of medical geology in addressing this gap in practical medical geology applications. The book's four sections establish this framework in detail using risk assessment, case studies, data analyses and specific medical geology techniques. Following an introduction to medical geology in the context of risk assessment and risk management, the second section discusses specific methods used in medical geology in the categories of geoscience, biomedicine, and data sources. The third section discusses the medical geology of natural materials, energy use, and environmental and workplace impacts. This section includes specific case studies in medical geology, and describes how the methods and data from the previous section are used in a medical geology analysis. The fourth section includes a guide to the medical geology literature and provides some examples of medical geology programs in Asia and Africa.

Book Synopsis The Story of the Scientific Discovery of Plastocyanin Dimorphism by : Mitko Ivanov Dimitrov
Download or read book The Story of the Scientific Discovery of Plastocyanin Dimorphism written by Mitko Ivanov Dimitrov and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photosynthesis is considered the most important process in the biosphere. A chain of four complex protein molecules localized in the chloroplasts (Photosystem II (PSII), Photosystem I (PSI), Cytochrome b6f (Cyt.b6f), and ATP synthase), plus several removable proteins, known as Plastoquinone (PQ), Plastocyanin (PC), Cytochrome c6 (Cyt.c6), and Ferredoxin (Fd), recreate or convert the solar energy into a double electron stream, both cyclic and linear. This book proposes the hypothesis that the physiological motif of plastocyanin dimorphism is a hallmark of higher plants. The book will also serve as a methodological guide to photosynthesis, as it offers various methods for the study of proteins.
