Book excerpt: In the older Greek education one-half of the school day was regularly spent by the Greek boys in exercises and games designed to make them strong and also to teach them the mental significance of sound health. During the middle ages this high ideal of soundness and sanity was lost, and even looked upon as spiritually dangerous. There is emerging to-day a new health consciousness. Medical inspection of school children has for its chief purpose the early discovery of physical defects or disease, so that such defects may be corrected in early life, or that contagion may be reduced to a minimum. The work began in this country less than 20 years ago, but the U.S. is now in the midst of the most rapid development of this part of the public educational service. Information is eagerly sought from all parts of the country. The manuscript hereby transmitted, entitled "Annotated Bibliography of Medical Inspection and Health Supervision of School Children in the United States for the years 1909-1912" was compiled in the Division of School Hygiene and Sanitation of this bureau. It is a digest of the chief literature on this subject published in America during the past four years, and will be very helpful, especially to school and health officers. Appended are: (1) Blanks and records; and (2) School activities in relation to children's eyes. An author and subject index is included. [Best copy available has been provided.].

Book excerpt: Medical journals are not often accessible to students and practitioners of education, and therefore the wealth of material in these journals regarding the health of school children is mainly lost to the educational world. The present bulletin is the result of a desire to put this material at the disposal of superintendents, principals, professors, students in normal schools and colleges, and even medical inspectors who may not have access to all the journals here represented. This bulletin contains the summaries of the best articles on the subject of children's health. The purpose has been to select, from the many articles studied, paragraphs of those articles only that add to the literature of school hygiene new data, new points of view, or noteworthy statements of current opinion. Some of the selections are not strictly within the limits of school hygiene, but are suggestive for the general health propaganda of the schools. The number of articles selected on the different subjects corresponds fairly to the proportion of varied and useful material available, some phases of school hygiene having been discussed little or not at all in the medical journals. No articles were chosen if they were known to have appeared also in educational journals, State health bulletins, or reports of two recent international congresses (Hygiene and Demography, Washington, 1912, and School Hygiene, Buffalo, 1913), as this material is widely accessible to students of education. Individual sections contain footnotes. An index is included. [Best copy available has been provided.].

Whole Number 555 written by Ernest Bryant Hoag and published by . This book was released on 1913 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago the public schools made no provision for the education of the blind, crippled, or mentally deficient, but now in New York City alone there are more than 100 classes for mentally peculiar children, while arrangements are rapidly making for the care of crippled and other classes of physically handicapped children. It was only as recently as 1909 that the first open-air school for tuberculous children was opened in Providence, but to-day such schools may be found in something over 40 cities. The special study of the mentally deficient child has engaged the attention of public-school educators for a period of less than three years, but at present plans are rapidly making in many progressive towns and cities for the careful study of such children by the employment of exact psychological methods. All these facts are interesting and significant, it must not be forgotten that no uniform methods of health organization in schools have been evolved, and that there still exist the most widely divergent beliefs and practices in this respect. Health work in schools needs standardization. The experiences of cities already organized in school health matters ought to be studied by other places attempting such organization for the first time. This bulletin discusses how organized health work in schools evolved. It contains the following parts: (1) Organization for Health Supervision; and (2) State Organization of School Hygiene in Minnesota. Appendix includes: Blanks and form for records, parents, notices, etc. A bibliography is included. Individual sections contain footnotes. [Best copy available has been provided.].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of abortion in the United States, with a new preface that equips readers for what’s to come. When Abortion Was a Crime is the must-read book on abortion history. Originally published ahead of the thirtieth anniversary of Roe v. Wade, this award-winning study was the first to examine the entire period during which abortion was illegal in the United States, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and ending with that monumental case in 1973. When Abortion Was a Crime is filled with intimate stories and nuanced analysis, demonstrating how abortion was criminalized and policed—and how millions of women sought abortions regardless of the law. With this edition, Leslie J. Reagan provides a new preface that addresses the dangerous and ongoing threats to abortion access across the country, and the precarity of our current moment. While abortions have typically been portrayed as grim "back alley" operations, this deeply researched history confirms that many abortion providers—including physicians—practiced openly and safely, despite prohibitions by the state and the American Medical Association. Women could find cooperative and reliable practitioners; but prosecution, public humiliation, loss of privacy, and inferior medical care were a constant threat. Reagan's analysis of previously untapped sources, including inquest records and trial transcripts, shows the fragility of patient rights and raises provocative questions about the relationship between medicine and law. With the right to abortion increasingly under attack, this book remains the definitive history of abortion in the United States, offering vital lessons for every American concerned with health care, civil liberties, and personal and sexual freedom.
