The lines had yet to be drawn between journalists and the people they covered, so she had access that would now be considered unusual. This unique collection provides a vivid account both of Leibovitz's development as an artist...

Book excerpt: "When Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines opened The East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Dedham, Essex, in 1937 they were both established artists with international reputations...Their idea was to set up an art school which would provide an alternative to the formal courses offered by the art schools in the metropolis. The aim, as expressed in the school's brochure, was to provide 'an environment where students can work together with more experienced artists in a common endeavour to produce sincere painting.' The emphasis was on encouraging freedom of invention, enthusiasm, and enjoyment, with the assumption that the student 'believes himself to have a clear idea of creative work and requires help only in its production'...The extracts which form the text of this book are based largely on conversations with our contributors which took place during the years 1998 and 1999. Articles, extracts from an autobiography and a diary are also included. They comprise the affectionate memories of a few of those who knew and loved Benton End and its two gifted and hospitable hosts." -- from the Introduction.

Book excerpt: This book addresses a gap in the study of audiovisual translation (AVT) carried out in minority languages by exploring the role played by translations appearing on the Basque Public Broadcasting Service in the promotion and development of the Basque language. Using the framework provided by descriptive translation studies, the author illustrates the socio-cultural context of AVT in the Basque Country, focusing on the dubbing from English to Basque of television animation for children. The most innovative aspect of the book lies in its cultural and descriptive approach. Following a corpus-based descriptive methodology, the study establishes a set of criteria for a contextual and linguistic analysis that embraces both the cultural and linguistic dimensions of translation and allows source texts to be compared with their translated versions at the macro- and micro-structural levels. The book uniquely offers a broad overview of the cultural context as well as a detailed analysis of the linguistic properties of the dubbed texts.

Book excerpt: Andre Rival, at home in both Paris and Berlin, has created a fascinating project out of a relatively simple idea: 100 women taking photographs of themselves. The outcome is both startling and impressive. It is an expression of contemporary female identity - self-aware, distinctive and thoroughly positive, in a series of nude photographs that inexorably capture and hold our attention, revealing at the same time the artist's highly creative approach to the medium of photography and to the individual selves of the women portrayed. The author describes his project in this way: "We are inundated with pictures of women in the media. Ordinarily, the pictures we see seek to achieve a kind of 'sameness' based on unwritten ideals of beauty; physical perfection, total fitness become the determining factors. These images of women, provoked as they are by the media industry, awakened in me the urge to confront both that industry and myself with something else. I chose to set aside my own ways of thinking and do a series of 100 women in which it was not I who would put together the photographs, but the women themselves. For this purpose, I gave them each a shutter-switch and left the room. That represented the beginning of the attempt to enable the women to become photographic subjects rather than objects; they were left to decide on their own which personal image of themselves they wanted to convey. The conditions were the same for all of the women: the same lighting, the same white background and the same unchanged camera position. It was essential to fix the location of the camera, so that the women did not perceive themselves as being pursued by an 'observer'; instead, they were able to establishdistance and camera angle themselves with the aid of a video screen that showed them each camera exposure as a still photo".

Book excerpt: A dramatic traveling exhibit of 15 works, The Lasting World: SIMON DINNERSTEIN and The Fulbright Triptych, is the theme of this new publication. The title, The Lasting World, comes from an essay on Simon Dinnerstein by the noted art theorist and psychologist, Rudolf Arnheim. Granted a Fulbright Fellowship in 1970-1971, Dinnerstein traveled to Germany where he began working on The Fulbright Triptych, his best known work. The triptych, which measures 14 feet in width, has been the subject of much critical response, including Roberta Smith and John Russell, both senior art critics of The New York Times: "This little-known masterpiece of 1970s realism was begun by the young Simon Dinnerstein during a Fulbright Fellowship in Germany and completed in his hometown, Brooklyn, three years later. Incorporating carefully rendered art postcards, children's drawings and personal memorabilia; a formidable worktable laid out with printmaking tools and outdoor views; and the artist and his family, it synthesizes portrait, still life, interior and landscape and rummages through visual culture while sampling a dazzling range of textures and representational styles. It should be seen by anyone interested in the history of recent art and its oversights."Roberta Smith, The New York Times, August 11, 2011: "Neither scale nor perseverance has anything to do with success in art, and Mr. Dinnerstein's triptych could be just one more painstaking failure. But it succeeds as an echo chamber, as a scrupulous representation of a suburb in the sticks, as a portrait of young people who are trying to make an honorable go of life and as inventory of the kind of things that in 1975 give such people a sense of their own identity. It deserves to go to a museum."John Russell, The New York Times, February 5, 1975. The publication includes an interview with noted art historian Lynn F. Jacobs on the triptych form and essays by Alex Barker, Director of the Art Museum at the University of Missouri and Tom Healy, who served three terms as Chairman of the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, which oversees the worldwide Fulbright Program.

Book excerpt: White Women, Helmut Newton's legendary first work, appeared more than twenty years ago. With it's superior mixture of aesthetics, technical perfection and bourgeois decadence it has lost nothing of its potency and attractiveness. Newton's work encompasses a wealth of themes, also embodying facets of the mass-media world of glamour, masquerade and show. Using subtle, yet striking images—like those of Paloma Picasso, Veruschka, Elsa Peretti, Karl Lagerfeld, David Hockney, and Charlotte Rampling—Newton embraces the delicate, natural beauty of the naked female body. White Women is a masterpiece of erotic visual literature.

This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wenceslaus Hollar (1607 Prague - 1677 London) was one of the most important artists of the 17th century. His international career, affluent patrons, and insatiable curiosity enabled him to create a diverse range of prints and drawings, remarkable for their varied subject matter and exceptional technical qualities. Hollar's oeuvre includes cities and fortifications, portraits, religious subjects, politics, mythology, architecture, heraldry and numismatics, antiquarian relics, costume, maps, sports, classical literature, landscape views, 'Old Master' drawings and paintings, and natural history. His work invokes his close observation of, and engagement with, the natural world, as much as the society of his times. Unfortunately, Hollar has received less attention than many of his contemporaries. He has all too often been undervalued as being primarily a 'reproductive printmaker' - one who reproduces in print the designs of others, or simply copies paintings into print. This volume seeks to revise how Hollar has formerly been characterized, through an exploration of hitherto unexamined drawings, as well as the more innovative qualities of his printmaking. It includes new research on Hollar's biography and his patrons, fresh perspectives on Hollar's portraits and urban scenes, and insights into Hollar's forays into the natural world. Partly the outcome of a 2010 symposium held at the Thomas Fisher Rare Books Library at the University of Toronto (repository of third largest collection of Hollar prints), this book comprises contributions from nine international print scholars, from Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, England, and The Netherlands. Their work on Hollar reaffirms his importance not only to the history of printmaking, but also to the art, science and culture of his times.
