Many years of his long life'in collecting materials for his work. He confulted a greatnum ber of books and pamphlets on commercial and politico-commcrcial fubjeéls: and from them, making fome (though perhaps not fut ficient) allowance for the partiality of controverfial writers, he chiefly drew his materials for the hiflory of the fixteenth and {even teenth centuries. But for at lcail half a century preceding the com mencement of the prefent re1gn he is an original author, relating, from his own knowlege and obfervation, the commercial tranfac none of the Britilh empire, with which he had every opportunity of being well acquainted, and in which he was in fome degree engaged, having been 1n the fervice of the South-fea company, I be lieve, above forty years. Hence we find, he 13 quite at home in the affairs of that company, and particularly in the very extraordinary tranfaélions of the year 1720, his account of which will ever be confidered as the fiandard l1ifiqry of that'noted éra of frantic ava rice and blind infatuation. Ifhe had been equally accurate in the early part Of his worlt' the talk of a fucceeding writer would have been little more than merely to continue the narrative from his conclufion. But unfortunately he trufted to tranllators and other modern writers, and thcfe {ome times not very properly chofen. His neglect of the antient hif tor1ans of Greece and Rome, and of the valuable hifiorians of the middle ages (whom the fupercilious ignorance of grammarians calls barbarous), and the want of fome public records not attainable in his time, have betrayed him into innumerable errors and omiilions. Hence it is necefl'ary to compofe the hillory of the early ages en tirely anew: and I have ventured to take upon myfelf the arduous tail: of giving an authentic chl'ofloiogia'al narrative of the progrefs of commerce, manufactures, fiiheries, and navigation, from the earlieft accounts to the difcovery of America in the year 1492.
