Book Synopsis Core-log Integration by : Peter K. Harvey
Download or read book Core-log Integration written by Peter K. Harvey and published by Geological Society Publishing House. This book was released on 1998 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses some of the problems of core-log integration encountered by scientists and engineers from both industry and academia. Core and log measurements provide crucial information about subsurface formations. Their usage, either for integration or calibration, is complicated by the different measurement methods employed, different volumes of formation analysed and, in turn, the heterogeneity of the formations. While the problems of comparing core and log data are only too well known, the way in which these data can be most efficiently combined is not at all clear in most cases. In recent years there has been increased interest in this problem, both in industry and academia, due to developments in technology which offer access to new types of information and, in the case of industry, pressure for improved reservoir models and hydrocarbon recovery. The application of new numerical methods for analysing and modelling core and log data, the availability of core scanning facilities, and novel core measurements in both two and three dimensions, currently provide a framework for the development of new and exciting approaches to core-log integration. The contributions within Core-Log Integration geologically range from hydrocarbon-bearing sediments in the North Sea to the volcanic rocks that form the upper part of the oceanic crust.
Book Synopsis Geochemistry of Geologic CO2 Sequestration by : Donald J. DePaolo
Download or read book Geochemistry of Geologic CO2 Sequestration written by Donald J. DePaolo and published by de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 77 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry focuses on important aspects of the geochemistry of geological CO2 sequestration. It is in large part an outgrowth of research conducted by members of the U.S. Department of Energy funded Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) known as the Center for Nanoscale Control of Geologic CO2 (NCGC). Eight out of the 15 chapters have been led by team members from the NCGC representing six of the eight partner institutions making up this center - Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (lead institution, D. DePaolo - PI), Oak Ridge National Laboratory, The Ohio State University, the University of California Davis, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Washington University, St. Louis.
Book Synopsis Texas Earthquakes by : Cliff Frohlich
Download or read book Texas Earthquakes written by Cliff Frohlich and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When nature goes haywire in Texas, it isn't usually an earthshaking event. Though droughts, floods, tornadoes, and hail all keep Texans talking about the unpredictable weather, when it comes to earthquakes, most of us think we're on terra firma in this state. But we're wrong! Nearly every year, earthquakes large enough to be felt by the public occur somewhere in Texas. This entertaining, yet authoritative book covers "all you really need to know" about earthquakes in general and in Texas specifically. The authors explain how earthquakes are caused by natural forces or human activities, how they're measured, how they can be predicted, and how citizens and governments should prepare for them. They also thoroughly discuss earthquakes in Texas, looking at the occurrences and assessing the risks region by region and comparing the amount of seismic activity in Texas to other parts of the country and the world. The book concludes with a compendium of over one hundred recorded earthquakes in Texas from 1811 to 2000 that briefly describes the location, timing, and effects of each event.

Book Synopsis Shales and Mudstones by : Jürgen Schieber
Download or read book Shales and Mudstones written by Jürgen Schieber and published by E. Schweizerbartsche Verlagsbuchhandlung. This book was released on 1998 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shales and mudstones are the most poorly understood sedimentary rock type. They comprise approximately two thirds of the stratigraphic column and contain the bulk of recorded earth history. In the future, understanding shales will be crucial for a wide variety of studies. Yet, getting a balanced perspective of research on these fascinating rocks is difficult because it is dispersed over so many subdisciplines. The two volumes of this book present up to date research on a wide range of topics in shale geology, and were assembled with the goal to ease access to this engaging field of research. Chapter introductions were written by experts in their field, and are intended to define the state of the art, to provide access to pertinent literature, and to set the stage for the corresponding research papers. Volume I covers basin-scale analysis, sedimentology and paleontology of shales. Volume II supplements this perspective with detailed treatments of petrography, burial history, petrophysics, geochemistry, and economic aspects of shales. The broad coverage of topics should make this book a valuable source of information for those that want to keep informed about current developments in shale research, and a source of inspiration for those interested to enter this exciting field of study.

Book excerpt: The coastal area of Purbeck in Dorset is rich in archaeological finds, and much rescue work has recently taken place here due to oil-field and other industrial development. The Purbeck project was initiated to see what could be added to this knowledge through modern methods of archaeological survey and through the analysis of historical sources. The papers in this collection look at various aspects of Purbeck history and archaeology, from the Iron Age, Roman and Medieval periods, to the eighteenth century. Contents: The excavation of an Iron Age and Romano-British settlement in Quarry Field, south of Compact Farm, Worth Matravers, Dorset (A H Graham, D A Hinton and D P S Peacock) ; A 'marginal economy'?
