Download or read book The Animal Sciences written by Ron Hotz and published by Coach House Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Animal Sciences is like a science fair project. Take a group of friends - the missing Robin, crazy Kookla, jealous Duffer, lost Autumn and Latvian Igor - add baking soda and vinegar, and watch what happens. As the story rockets back and forth between the past and present, the consecutive anecdotes start to coalesce into something more than the sum of its parts, and we begin to see how the different atoms - the characters - of this particular molecule are interdependent. We come to suspect, too, that just as the laws of nature make that baking-soda volcano inevitable, so too do they rule human relationships, making volcanoes out of some chemical reactions and warmth out of others. Maybe, just maybe, human sciences aren't so different from the animal ones. What is it that makes us human? Could it be love?

Book Synopsis Making Animals Public by : Gay Hawkins and Ben Dibley
Download or read book Making Animals Public written by Gay Hawkins and Ben Dibley and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Animals Public: television, animality and political engagement focuses on the proliferation of animal content on television and how this has transformed how animals are known and encountered, generating unique modes of televisual animality. The book examines the multiplicity of public realities and knowledges that animals on TV have constituted: from scientific objectivity, to the unique Australian environment, to controversial victims of gross exploitation. Just as television has made animals public in very particular ways, it has also made new publics that have learnt to be affected by them. Thanks to extraordinary access to the ABC’s Natural History and general archives, the authors are able to investigate the dynamic relation between making animals public and making publics over time.

Download or read book Animal Worlds written by Laura McMahon and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-29 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on a recent wave of international art cinema, Animal Worlds offers the first sustained analysis of the relations between cinematic time and animal life. Through an aesthetic of extended duration, films such as Bestiaire (2010), The Turin Horse (2011) and A Cow's Life (2012) attend to animal worlds of sentience and perception, while registering the governing of life through biopolitical regimes. Bringing together Gilles Deleuze's writings on cinema and on animals - while drawing on Jacques Derrida, Jean-Christophe Bailly, Nicole Shukin and others - the book argues that these films question the biopolitical reduction of animal life to forms of capital, opening up realms of virtuality, becoming and alternative political futures.

Book Synopsis Semiotics of Animals in Culture by : Gianfranco Marrone
Download or read book Semiotics of Animals in Culture written by Gianfranco Marrone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To place animals within the realm of nature, means inserting them among the articulations of culture and the social. Semiotics has never avoided this chiasmus, choosing to deal from the outset with the problem of the languages of animals following the old admonition of Montaigne: it is not that animals do not talk, it is us who do not understand them. Recent research in the field of the anthropology of nature and sociology of sciences and techniques allow to think about the Zoosemiotic issue in a different way. Instead of transplanting the language structures – gestures, LIS, etc. – for a semiotic study of the forms of the human and social meaning, it seems more apt to look at their discourse, and as such, the actual interactions, communicative and scientific as well as practical and functional, between humans and non-humans. This book aims to investigate precisely this hypothesis, known here as Zoosemiotics 2.0, working on several fronts and levels: · Anthropology · Languages of the image and visual representations, from art history to cinema · Old and new media. From literature to comics, from cartoons to TV documentaries but also advertising, music, Web and social networks. All those cultural products that talk about the role of human and non-human in society implicitly proposing (and in some way imposing) a form of articulation of such a relationship. · Food and feeding rites · Animalist, vegetarian and vegan movements · Philosophy: metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the First World War, President Woodrow Wilson bought a flock of sheep to trim the White House grounds to save money on groundskeeping. One of the sheep, called Old Ike, even became a public phenomenon for his ornery disposition and his penchant for chewing tobacco. Included here are hundreds of well-researched accounts of the fascinating animals that have played vital roles throughout history. Featured animals include Able, who flew on a space mission; Bayou, Salvador Dali's ocelot companion; and G.I. Joe, a pigeon who saved more than 100 people during World War II. These and many other stories detail the unexpected contributions of our animal companions in settings of war, space travel, stage and screen. The book is organized alphabetically by the given name of each animal, and entries feature compelling factual descriptions in a storytelling format.
