Book excerpt: From 1983 to 2005, more than two million Sudanese lives were lost in southern Sudan in a quest for civil rights and independence. Author Agok Manyang was one of the lucky ones; he lived and eventually made his way to the United States. In The Phoenix of South Sudan he narrates his story of flight and survival. In 1987, when Manyang was just ten years old, war came to his small village of Bor, and for the next fourteen years, he and other children flirted with death, with fear as a constant companion. This memoir recalls the details of the dangers he faced fleeing through jungles, eating leaves, running from gunfire, sleeping in the open, fearing wild animals and armies, battling mosquitoes and the elements, drinking contaminated water, and coping with hunger, thirst, and disease. While scavenging for food and shelter in the jungles of Africa, Manyang held tightly to the hope of one day reuniting with family and friends, and it was that hope that kept him alive. Despite the odds, he survived and this is his story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'm Mamer Dau Thuch, the author of The Shadows of Wrath-Life Trials. I was born in South Sudan, a country known both for its extensive resources and its dangerous civil wars. Poor leadership has led to widespread fear in South Sudan. Civil wars have killed millions since 1983 and have forced millions more to fl ee to neighbouring countries. Many more people have taken refuge in Europe, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and other countries across the globe. In 1991, I myself faced death in South Sudan. Confl ict always made my life and safety uncertain, and I was exposed to the horrors of war at a young age. In 1991, the genocide struck the citizen of Bor, perpetrated by the Nassir faction. I was almost killed, and when I survived, I was left with nothing but my memories. I fl ed to Ngalngala in Central Equatoria State, thinking that the war would eventually cease and that I would return to my village. But safety did not come, and I never saw my village again. I would be a ref ugee for the rest of my life. I do not believe that peace will prevail in my country in my lifetime, and I know that others who share similar journeys to my own feel the same way. I am haunted by the horrors of Bor's genocide and by the trauma of the civil wars in my village and which I also faced in my country. The atrocities I witnessed in South Sudan helped me to understand the world and gave me my story to tell. My hope in telling the story of my life's trials is that, should I live to marry and have children, they will read about my experiences and understand the history of South Sudan. I hope that my future family and my readers will learn what it means to be a refugee and what it takes to settle in a country so far from home.

Book excerpt: Cuba has loomed large in American memory and history. Throughout the last half-century, the island and its larger-than-life revolutionary leader have been key players in the Cold War and mythologized by Americans and American politicians. In 2016, relations thawed, and the country opened its doors to American. The Rolling Stones played in Havana. President Obama arrived too in March. He was the first President to visit the nation almost 100 years—since Coolidge in 1928. And then Fidel Castro passed away in November 2016, marking the end of the momentous era in Cuban history. In The Day Fidel Died, Patrick Symmes interweaves reporting from years spent traveling to the Cuban Island, a narrative history of the rise of Fidelismo and the last sixty-plus years of life there under Fidel. Symmes’ exploration of the Castros’ Cuba—how it came to be and what it’s becoming—paints a wondrous and striking portrait of the nation, its culture, politics and people for anyone first undertaking a trip or those still dreaming of doing so. A Vintage Shorts ebook original.

This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines post-colonial and post-independence challenges facing South Sudan, both external and internal factors as it transitions into becoming a nation state. Other focuses are issues that hinder the implementation of good governance, delivery of services to the people, preservation of the environment and natural resources, and the unity among South Sudans multiple ethnicities. The book also briefly touches on my personal journey in pursuit of elementary and higher education, a rough journey that began in a country that has been ravaged by a civil war. Therefore, it would serve as informative and inspirational to those who may face difficult experiences as a refugee or emigrants. In addition, this book supposed to be published in the summer of 2013; however, the author was caught in a civil war that broke out while on a visit in South Sudan and he escaped near death twice, in the Juba massacres of the Nuers and the attack on his home town of Ulang, all were carried out by the South Sudan military, ordered by countrys leader, Salva Kiir Mayardit. As a result, the author was stranded in the remote area of South Sudan for more than a year before he could finally return to the United States. Since this book is written from Social Responsibility and Social Justice perspectives, it addresses some of the issues that affect individual and the society as whole. And some of the Issues covered in this book were among the forecasting challenges and problems that are now facing people of South Sudan under the leadership of Salva Kiir and some of them came to reality as I predicted them during the writings of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook in history is primarily intended for secondary schools in South Sudan. The focus is on the history of South Sudan, and is in this sense a pioneer work since it is the country's first secondary school book dealing primarily with the history of the South. Even though the focus is on South Sudan its history cannot be interpreted in a vacuum, and particularly North-South relations are discussed extensively in the book. Secondary school students in Sudan have either studied the history of Kenya and Uganda, or the history of North Sudan since no history book for South Sudan has existed. The book may also be of interest to academics, politicians, historians and college and university students as well civil society groups such as churches, youth and women's groups.

During a 21-year civil war, 2 million lives were lost and 80 percent of the South Sudanese people were displaced. Tens of thousands of boys like Majok fled from the Sudanese Army that wanted to kill them. Surviving on grasses, grains, and help from villagers along the way, Majok walked nearly a thousand miles to a refugee camp in Ethiopia. Majok and 3,800 like him emigrated to the United States in 2001 while the civil war still raged. His story is joined to others' in this book.
