Book excerpt: "In 1977-1979, ten intertidal mudflats in Minas Basin and Chignecto Bay were studied to determine the invertebrate species composition and species' abundances on each flat as well as differences in sediment types (substrate particle sizes) which might account for the variations found between the mudflats. The same investigations were carried out in 1994 and the findings were compared to the results obtained in 1977-1979 in order to confirm qualitative observations that considerable changes had occured in substrate types which might be associated with observed reductions in invertebrate abundances"--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term population monitoring is an important tool in our investigations of the role waterbirds play in their environment. This book is international in scope and presents information on species as diverse as the Common Loon, Harlequin Duck, and Semi-Palmated Sandpiper, and habitat in locations ranging from Iceland to Japan. Papers presented in this volume further our understanding of the important role that limnology plays in determining habitat suitability for waterbirds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods recommended by Environment Canada for performing 10-day tests for sediment toxicity, using one or more of the following species of marine or estuarine sediment-burrowing amphipods, are described in this report: Amphiporeia virginiana, Corophium colutator, Eohaustorius estuarius, Eohaustorius washingtonianus, Foxiphalus xiximeus, Leptocheirus pinguis, and Rhepoxynius abronius. The biological endpoint for the test is percent mortality at Day 10. Additional (sublethal) endpoints that measure the percentage of surviving amphipods that emerge from the sediment at Day 10 (i.e., avoidance response) and/or the ability of the amphipods to rebury when transferred to control sediment, can also be determined using this test. The test is performed in 1-L glass vessels, with 175 mL of solid-phase sediment and 759 mL of overlying seawater. General or universal conditions and procedures are outlined for preparing for and undertaking the test. Additional conditions and procedures are stipulated that are specific to the intended use of the test (e.g., assessment of samples of field-collected sediment, sludge or other solid waste, or chemical introduced to sediment). Included are: instructions on collecting, identifying, and transporting test organisms; sorting and handling procedures; holding and acclimatization conditions; sample transport and storage; test facility requirements; procedures for preparing test sediments and test initiation; specified test conditions; appropriate observations and measurements, endpoints, methods of calculation; the use of reference toxicants, and test validation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the main marine and coastal biological systems of Passamaquoddy Bay and adjacent waters and the oceanographic and meteorological characteristics of the area. Subject areas begin with meteorolgy and oceanography. The second group covers the intertidal systems with chapters on rocky intertidal shores, rock pools, coarse sedimentary shores and salt marshes. The third general section covers hard and sedimentary sublittoral habitats. Following chapters discuss pelagic systems under the headings fishes, phytoplankton, larger zooplankton, and microzooplankton. Three chapters deal with the birds, amphibians and reptiles, and marine mammals. Finally coastal vegetation is described.
