Book excerpt: The book describes the main marine and coastal biological systems of Passamaquoddy Bay and adjacent waters and the oceanographic and meteorological characteristics of the area. Subject areas begin with meteorolgy and oceanography. The second group covers the intertidal systems with chapters on rocky intertidal shores, rock pools, coarse sedimentary shores and salt marshes. The third general section covers hard and sedimentary sublittoral habitats. Following chapters discuss pelagic systems under the headings fishes, phytoplankton, larger zooplankton, and microzooplankton. Three chapters deal with the birds, amphibians and reptiles, and marine mammals. Finally coastal vegetation is described.

Book excerpt: The 32nd European Marine Biology Symposium was held in Lysekil, Sweden on August 16-22, 1997, organised by Kristineberg Marine Research Station. The selected topics were: `Recruitment and colonisation' and `Physical and Chemical Forcing on Marine Biological Systems', partly reflecting the present research interests at Kristineberg. In this volume, recruitment and colonisation processes cover primarily the dynamics of interspecific interactions within assemblages as well as the effects of hydrodynamic variables. Both laboratory and field studies are emphasised. The contribution of papers within the topic `Physical and Chemical Forcing on Marine Biological Systems' deals with structuring effects of, for example, tides, temperatures, nutrients and hypoxia on the physiology and ecology of marine organisms. The book covers many aspects of marine life. It is our hope that the selected topics will fascinate readers and be of wide interest to students and researchers in marine biology.

Book excerpt: This book represents an outgrowth of an interdisciplinary session held at the Seventh International Estuarine Research Federation Conference held at Virginia Beach, Virginia, OCLober 1983. At that meeting, the participants agreed to contribute to and develop a monograph entitled "Tidal Mixing and Plankton Dynamics" by inviting an expanded group of authors to contribute chapters on this theme. The emphasis would be to review and summarize the considerable body of knowledge that has accumulated over the last decade or so on the fundamental role tidal mixing plays in energetic shallow seas and estuaries in stimulating and controlling biological production. We have attempted to provide a mix of contributions, composed of reviews of the state-of-the-art, reports on current research activi ties, summaries of the design and testing of a new generation of innovative instruments for biological and chemical sampling and sorting, and some imaginative ideas for future experiments on stimulated mixing in continental shelf seas. We encouraged the contributors to present critical and thought provoking assessments of current wisdom specifying the sorts of techniques and observational strategies needed to validate the various hypotheses linking physical structure, mixing and circulation to plankton biomass and production. We hope this volume will appeal to incoming research students and established scholars alike. We certainly have enjoyed working with all the authors in compiling this book. We thank the numerous scientists who have served as reviewers, P. Boisvert for typing the manuscripts and W. Bellows for proofreading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into human-induced and natural impacts on coastal wetlands, intended or otherwise, through a series of vignettes that elucidate the environmental insults and efforts at amelioration and remediation. The alteration, and subsequent restoration, of wetland habitats remain key issues among coastal scientists. These topics are introduced through case studies and pilot programs that are designed to better understand the best practices of trying to save what is left of these fragile ecosystems. Local approaches, as well as national and international efforts to restore the functionality of marsh systems are summarily approached and evaluated by their efficacy in producing resilient reclamations in terms of climate-smart habitat conservation. The outlook of this work is global in extent and local by intent. Included here in summarized form are professional opinions of experts in the field that investigate the crux of the matter, which proves to be human pressure on coastal wetland environments. Even though conservation and preservation of these delicate environmental systems may be coming at a later date, many multi-pronged approaches show promise through advances in education, litigation, and engineering to achieve sustainable coastal systems. The examples in this book are not only of interest to those working exclusively with coastal wetlands, but also to those working to protect the surrounding coastal areas of all types.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Atlantic coast of North America—commonly known as the Atlantic Coast—extends from Newfoundland and Labrador through the Maritime Provinces and the Northeastern United States south to Cape Hatteras. This North Atlantic region belongs to the sea. The maritime influence on climate, flora, and fauna is dominant — even far inland. Both on land and at sea, this region is where north meets south, where the great northern boreal forests intermingle with the southern coniferous-hardwood forests, and where the icy Labrador Current and the tropical Gulf Stream vie for supremacy and eventually mix. The Atlantic Coast draws upon the best and most up-to-date science on the ecology of the region as well as the author’s lifetime experience as a resident, biologist, and naturalist. The book explores the geological origins of the region, the two major forest realms, and the main freshwater and marine ecosystems, and describes the flora and fauna that characterize each habitat. It ends with a look at what has been lost and how the remaining natural heritage of the region might be conserved for the future.

Book excerpt: A workshop was held to explore the need for an ecological research and monitoring site in the Atlantic Maritime Ecozone, with particular reference to the land/sea/atmospheric interface (coastal zone), and to explore the suitability of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, in conjunction with the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Biological Station, as the administrative center of such a site. This publication presents summaries of the working group discussions on estuarine and marine ecosystems, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and ecosystems data management, and includes papers presented at the workshop. The topics of the papers include ecosystem and wildlife monitoring, atmospheric variables and trees, research and monitoring programs, sulfur dioxide deposition, lakewater chemistry, benthic monitoring, and nutrient cycling patterns.

This book divides the topic into its broad parts: Eutrophication; Sedimentation and Benthic Impacts; Changes in Trophic Structure and Function; and Managing Environmental Risks, and goes further to analyze methods and models currently used to measure near and far-field environmental effects of finfish mariculture and and their implications for management.
