Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of angular resolution is formulated in a statistical decision theoretic context. A tutorial discussion of decision theory and its application to resolution is presented, and an explicit signal processing radar system is derived whose resolving properties approach an optimum. Computer simulation tests show that the system is capable of reliably resolving targets as close as a quarter of a 3-db beamwidth in the presence of noise and system errors. (Author).

Book excerpt: The imaging process in stellar interferometers is explained starting from first principles on wave propagation and diffraction. Wave propagation through turbulence is described in detail using Kolmogorov statistics. The impact of turbulence on the imaging process is discussed both for single telescopes and for interferometers. Correction methods (adaptive optics and fringe tracking) are presented including wavefront sensing/fringe sensing methods and closed loop operation. Instrumental techniques like beam combination and visibility measurements (modulus and phase) as well as Nulling and heterodyne interferometry are described. The book closes with examples of observing programmes linking the theory with individual astrophysical programmes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research dealt with decision theoretic antenna processing systems and the development and application of a new coherence theory to optimum antenna system design. The objective was the development of techniques that would result in improved target parameter estimates and better detection and resolution capability than those achieved by conventional systems. A new theory was developed, called transcoherence theory. It can be used to determine the optimum amplitude and/or phase shading for an antenna that is intended as an information-gathering device. It is particularly useful when employed for the purpose of compensating for deleterious medium effects. The theory can also be used to find the coherence properties of sources, where these properties are essential to the specification of the a priori statistics of target signals and clutter. A relatively simple decision theoretic processor was built and found to improve angular resolution by at least a factor of four over that of conventional systems. The research studies and their results are documented in seven scientific reports and several papers. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of antenna processing for surface target detection in clutter is considered in this report. The general problem of the hypothesis testing and estimating of N targets in clutter and noise is formulated by means of decision theory. The theory is applied to the case of a single, nonscintillating target with unknown a priori amplitude, phase, and location. The a priori statistics of these parameters are assumed, and target detection is accomplished by means of a generalized likelihood ratio test. The hypothesis test is instrumented for clutter as well as receiver noise. Both scintillating and nonscintillating clutter are considered. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I became President of International Astronomical Union Commission 44 for the triennial period 1985-1988, several members of the Organizing Committee and I agreed that it would be a good idea for our Commission to host a conference on observatories in space in view of their increasingly important role in astronomi cal research. IAU Colloquium Number 123 "Observatories in Earth Orbit and Beyond" is the first colloquium sponsored by IAU Com mission 44 on Astronomy from Space, although Commission 44 has co-sponsored numerous colloquia and symposia in the past. The past two decades have seen a flourishing of astronomical observatories in space. Over a dozen orbiting observatories have opened up a new window on the universe, providing hitherto una vailable data in the electromagnetic spectral range from gamma-ray, X-ray, ultraviolet to infrared and radio. This has clearly demon strated the crucial nature of astronomical observations from space. The invited talks of present colloquium consist primarily of reviews of currently operating observatories in space, future observatories that have been approved by sponsoring government or space agencies, the launch systems of U.S.A., E.S.A., U.S.S.R. and Japan, discussions of various orbits and sites (such as the Moon), and alternate approaches in designing space observatories. Several panel discus sions addressed those issues as well as the major unsolved problems of astronomy. Contributed poster papers included descriptions of space observatories that are in planning stage.

Book excerpt: Structural phase transitions, mechanical deformations, and the embryonic stages of melting and crystallization are examples of phenomena that can now be imaged in unprecedented structural detail with high spatial resolution, and ten orders of magnitude as fast as hitherto. No monograph in existence attempts to cover the revolutionary dimensions that EM in its various modes of operation nowadays makes possible. The authors of this book chart these developments, and also compare the merits of coherent electron waves with those of synchrotron radiation. They judge it prudent to recall some important basic procedural and theoretical aspects of imaging and diffraction so that the reader may better comprehend the significance of the new vistas and applications now afoot. This book is not a vade mecum - numerous other texts are available for the practitioner for that purpose.
