Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second installment called Sammys Science Arizona, I deal solely with animals and plants inhabiting the state of Arizona. As always, I tell the science facts in this book using my mixed species animal family characters from our radio broadcast. The main characters are Sammy Skunk, the dad; Daphne Skunk, the mama; Erasmus, the teenage porcupine; Ewald, the middle school-age roadrunner; our pet orange tabby cat, Bonkers; and Tremor, the wee skateboarding mouse. In this book, Randy Raccoon, Eddy Beaver, Donkey Dan, Beanie the Goat, Big Red, and a few other characters also appear. Though we have many dangerous animals in the state of Arizona, most are small, including the coral snake, several species of rattle snakes, scorpions, centipedes, Gila monsters, several spiders, and many other small creatures. There are also a few dangerous desert plants. Then we also have six medium-to-large carnivores that call our state their home. I hope that by reading this book, visitors, new residents, as well as those that have been residents for a few years will learn to be careful while hiking in the states wilderness areas. Enjoy your everyday lives, and be careful while hiking, camping, biking, or hunting in Arizona. Never go hiking without a friend or two along, and like me, carry a big knife, plenty of water, a good hat, plenty of sunscreen, and a good walking stick with you. Enjoy Arizona. Sammy

Book excerpt: Sammys Science is a collection of nature science facts told in story form, as heard on the Donkey Dan radio broadcasts that spanned four years of Sunday mornings on the old KLKY Prescott Valley Arizona Station. Many stories were told on the Farmer Family Album segment, and these are some of the science stories as told by George. These stories are based on the real-life moments of George growing up and when he had a family. Some stories were just notes and never made it to the show before we ended. Sammys Science will give you fun facts about our natural world of both animals and plants. Though it geared toward ages 916, adults would still like the science facts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, the radio documentary has developed into a strikingly vibrant form of creative expression. Millions of listeners hear arresting, intimate storytelling from an ever-widening array of producers on programs including This American Life, StoryCorps, and Radio Lab; online through such sites as Transom, the Public Radio Exchange, Hearing Voices, and Soundprint; and through a growing collection of podcasts. Reality Radio celebrates today's best audio documentary work by bringing together some of the most influential and innovative practitioners from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. In these nineteen essays, documentary artists tell--and demonstrate, through stories and transcripts--how they make radio the way they do, and why. Whether the contributors to the volume call themselves journalists, storytellers, even audio artists--and although their essays are just as diverse in content and approach--all use sound to tell true stories, artfully. Book excerpt: This new revised and expanded edition of Reality Radio celebrates today's best audio documentary work by bringing together some of the most influential and innovative practitioners from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. With a new foreword and five new essays, this book takes stock of the transformations in radio documentary since the publication of the first edition: the ascendance of the podcast; greater cultural, racial, and topical variety; and the changing economics of radio itself. In twenty-four essays total, documentary artists tell--and demonstrate, through stories and transcripts--how they make radio the way they do, and why. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science fiction is the playground of the imagination. If you are interested in science or fascinated with the future then science fiction is where you explore new ideas and let your dreams and nightmares duke it out on the safety of the page or screen. But what if we could use science fiction to do more than that? What if we could use science fiction based on science fact to not only imagine our future but develop new technologies and products? What if we could use stories, movies and comics as a kind of tool to explore the real world implications and uses of future technologies today? Science Fiction Prototyping is a practical guide to using fiction as a way to imagine our future in a whole new way. Filled with history, real world examples and conversations with experts like best selling science fiction author Cory Doctorow, senior editor at Dark Horse Comics Chris Warner and Hollywood science expert Sidney Perkowitz, Science Fiction Prototyping will give you the tools you need to begin designing the future with science fiction. The future is Brian David Johnson’s business. As a futurist at Intel Corporation, his charter is to develop an actionable vision for computing in 2021. His work is called “future casting”—using ethnographic field studies, technology research, trend data, and even science fiction to create a pragmatic vision of consumers and computing. Johnson has been pioneering development in artificial intelligence, robotics, and reinventing TV. He speaks and writes extensively about future technologies in articles and scientific papers as well as science fiction short stories and novels (Fake Plastic Love and Screen Future: The Future of Entertainment, Computing and the Devices We Love). He has directed two feature films and is an illustrator and commissioned painter. Table of Contents: Preface / Foreword / Epilogue / Dedication / Acknowledgments / 1. The Future Is in Your Hands / 2. Book excerpt: This document reports the written and oral testimony given at two congressional hearings investigating the possibilities and methods for having degrees granted at military intermediate service schools and master's degrees granted at the National War College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Officials testifying included high-ranking military officers, educational officials, and officials of accreditation organizations. Witnesses stated the advantages of degree-granting authority and pressed for Congress to authorize that facility, as one step in the accreditation process. Those who testified noted earlier efforts at accreditation for other military institutions and stressed that Congress had to grant degree-granting authority before the accrediting organizations would rule on standards for accreditation. Most of the testimony stressed the high quality of the military institutions and argued for passage of degree-granting authority for them. (KC)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chemistry student falls for his teacher and uncovers a centuries-old quest for the elixir of life The morning after the death of his first love, Conrad Aybinder receives a bequest. Sammy Tampari was Conrad’s lover. He was his teacher. And, it turns out, he was not just a chemist, but an alchemist, searching for a mythic elixir of life. Sammy’s death was sudden, yet he somehow managed to leave twenty years’ worth of his notebooks and a storage locker full of expensive, sometimes baffling equipment in the hands of his star student. The notebooks contain cryptic “recipes,” but no instructions; they tell his life story, but only hint at what might have caused his death. And Sammy’s research is littered with his favorite teaching question: What’s missing? As Conrad pieces together the solution, he finds he is not the only one to suspect that Sammy succeeded in his quest. And if he wants to save his father from a mysterious illness, Conrad will have to make some very difficult choices. A globe-trotting, century-spanning adventure story, Jake Wolff’s The History of Living Forever takes us from Maine to Romania to Easter Island and introduces a cast of unforgettable characters—drug kingpins, Big Pharma flunkies, centenarians, boy geniuses, and even a group of immortalists masquerading as coin collectors. It takes us deep into the mysteries of life—from first love to first heartbreak, from the long pall of grief to the irreconcilable loneliness of depression to the possibility of medical miracles, from coming of age to coming out. Hilarious, haunting, heart-busting, life-affirming, it asks each of us one of life’s essential questions: How far would you go for someone you love?
