There has been no warping of truth to accomplish any end. The authority for each statement is cited, and where hypothetical speculation has been necessary the value to be attached to it has, as far as possible, been estimated. Such work as this will be considered by many but as labour in vain. Still it must be remembered that we all are, in great part, what our forbears made us, and, by looking into the annals of the past, traits of the present and glimpses of the future may often be discerned amidst those dusty records.
