Book excerpt: This illustrated account of the impact of the English Gothic revival on American church architecture in the mid-nineteenth century finds that this fundamentally conservative movement provided the foundation for a new, influential aesthetic. With meticulous research and carefully chosen illustrations, Phoebe Stanton here explores the influence of the English Gothic revival on American church architecture in the mid-nineteenth century, arguing that this fundamentally conservative movement provided a foundation for a new aesthetic. Examining the writings of the movement's leading proponents as well as a variety of important buildings, Stanton offers a comprehensive survey of the architectural principles and models that became most influential in America. She also confirms the importance of the Cambridge Camden Society, which provided the theoretical atmosphere and practical examples that helped to establish new standards of excellence in American architecture.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1850 edition. Excerpt: ... Chapter 33. In this chapter we propose to explain the general form and arrangement of ancient churches and their furniture, which as before mentioned, is of far greater importance than mere detail: for of what use is good writing if the spelling be bad? or of what use is good spelling if the words have no sense in them? So a knowledge of detail in Architecture is of little worth, if the greater principles of combination be not thoroughly understood. The sin of modern Church Architecture in England until these last few years has not been in the badness of detail, for it has oft times been most pure, yet the building where it is found has been most wretched. It has consisted in the misapplication of those details; sometimes by copying them on too small a scale, thereby rendering them absurd, as. the building churches for dolls or cathedrals for babies: sometimes by misplacing them, as in putting windows well suited for a flank elevation in a western front, or a cathedral doorway in a village porch, and vice versa. When we consider what Architecture really is; that it implies not only the art of building well, but building beautifully and appropriately, we shall soon see that something beyond a mere correctness of detail is necessary to produce a perfect building. When we look abroad on the world and trace the hand of God in the vegetable, animal or mineral kingdom, it is not the beauty of form alone which the most enchants us;--it is not alone the peculiar suitability of each portion to do its particular work that engages our admiration; but it is the combination of utility with beauty which impresses us with wonder and awe, and which tells us in language not to be mistaken, " The hand that made us is divine." In creation beauty appears...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pugin’s global influence on church architecture and material reform The year 2012 marked the bicentenary of the gothic revival architect A.W.N. Pugin. His influence as a designer not only spread fast globally, but also played a leading part in the transformation of material culture from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Pugin’s work has been comprehensively reevaluated over the last decade. In this volume sixteen leading scholars from across the globe discuss Pugin’s direct influence on church architecture and furnishing. Beautifully illustrated with a large selection of new photography, Gothic Revival Worldwide, the successor to the volume Gothic Revival published in 2000, reveals how Pugin’s ideas played a profound role in the changing face of material reform in church architecture as an expression of the evolving identity of the churches across the world from North America to Mongolia and the South Pacific. Book excerpt: Of the fifty religious buildings discussed in this book, only a precious few remain standing despite the fact that Montreal boasts one of the largest and most eclectic groupings of Georgian and Victorian structures of any city in North America.Following the British conquest of New France in 1759 a remarkable series of transformations took place in the small, Catholic trading town of Montreal. Given the diversity of settlers forced to live side by side, the new church buildings that were to rise became strategic public spaces, meeting places as well as power bases. It was no wonder that by the time Mark Twain toured Canada’s first metropolis in the 1880s, he found that one could not throw a brick in the place without breaking a church window.By addressing the social, religious and architectural issues surrounding these colonial-era structures, it will become apparent that Montreal was at once a shining jewel in England’s imperial crown, a chief outpost of Catholicism in the New World, as well as the British North American headquarters for more than a dozen independent congregations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canterbury Cathedral’s medieval Gothic image survived centuries of religious discord, neglect and Georgian ’improvements’. From 1800, a new generation was re-inspired by the prevalent architectural and artistic ’Gothick’ vogue. At this time, a passionately ambitious young architect, William Butterfield, created a Gothic missionary college in two years, and the Dean of Canterbury, who wanted the Cathedral to rival St Peter’s, Rome, began the rolling repair programme continuing in today’s Appeal. Priests, bishops and Gothic enthusiasts carried the style from there to parish churches, industrial cities and the colonies. With more than fifty illustrations, including a striking colour section, this book will delight lovers of Canterbury and of the Gothic style everywhere.
