Book excerpt: Anatomy and Histology of the Laboratory Rat in Toxicology and Biomedical Research presents the detailed systematic anatomy of the rat, with a focus on toxicological needs. Most large works dealing with the laboratory rat provide a chapter on anatomy, but fall far short of the detailed account in this book which also focuses on the needs of toxicologists and others who use the rat as a laboratory animal. The book includes detailed guides on dissection methods and the location of specific tissues in specific organ systems. Crucially, the book includes classic illustrations from Miss H. G. Q. Rowett, along with new color photo-micrographs. Written by two of the top authors in their fields, this book can be used as a reference guide and teaching aid for students and researchers in toxicology. In addition, veterinary/medical students, researchers who utilize animals in biomedical research, and researchers in zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology and pharmacology will find this book to be a great resource. Illustrated with over 100 black and white and color images to assist understanding Contains detailed descriptions and explanations to accompany all images, thus helping with self-study Designed for toxicologic research for people from diverse backgrounds, including biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, immunology and general biomedical sciences

Since the first edition, new information has developed at a remarkable pace. Both editions propose standardized nomenclature that is being used internationally, gaining significant acceptance. The result is improved communications of pathologic data to regulatory agencies and in scientific publications worldwide. New information on the nature and variability of preneoplastic lesions in the liver of laboratory rodents is included in this edition. The book expands data on the accompanying changes in enzyme activity in affected liver cells. Spongiosis hepatis in the rat and its relation to spongiotic pericytoma are discussed thoroughly. Information on many other pathologic entities is brought up to date and new ones are added to this second edition, making it an even more useful and expanded reference text.

Book excerpt: The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) was creat ed to promote cooperative efforts toward solving critical health and safety questions involving foods, drugs, cosmet ics, chemicals, and other aspects of the environment. The officers and trustees believe that questions regarding health and safety are best resolved when government and industry rely on scientific investigations, analyses, and reviews by independent experts. Further, the scientific aspects of an issue should be examined and discussed on an international basis, separate from the political concerns of individual companies. The Institute is pleased to sponsor this set of monographs on pathology of laboratory animals. This project will help to improve the scientific application of the techniques of pathology to the evaluation of substances in our environ ment. The worldwide distribution of the authors, editors, and editorial board encourages the expectation that inter national communication and cooperation will also be strengthened. Alex Malaspina President International Life Sciences Institute Preface This book on the endocrine system is Volume I of a set of reference books on pathology of laboratory animals, prepared by the Interna tional Life Sciences Institute in response to recommendations from its Committee on Pathology and Toxicology. One aim is to provide infor mation which will be useful to pathologists, especially those involved in studies on the safety of foods, drugs, chemicals, and other sub stances in the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of the Anatomy of the Rat Four common Species of this family are found in the United States. The common house mouse (mus museums) is less than two hundred millimeters in length when adult. The generic designation Epfimys has been established for the rats, but the older term M as is doubtless more familiar. Mus rattus rattus (the black, or house rat) is the rat of the Middle Ages in Europe. It probably reached that continent some six hundred years before the Norway rat arrived. The black rat preceded the Norway rat in North America, and occurs still in scattered localities in the northern United States. Its diagnostic characteristics are: the ears when laid forward extend at least to the middle of the eye; the tail is longer than the head and body; and is dusky all around; hind foot 33-37 millimeters; the color is blue-black above, and Slaty below. A color variety, Mus rattus alewand'rinus (roof, snake, or Alexandrian rat) is grayish-brown above, white or yellowish white below (lantz). It is said to be common in the southern states near the coast. Mus nowegicus (the brown, gray, barn, wharf, sewer, or Norway rat) has, as a result of its adapta bility, fecundity, strength, and ferocity, largely replaced the other species of rats in temperate climates. When well fed it is said that a female Norway rat can give birth to from sixty to a hundred young a year. It is more of a bur rower than the black or roof rat, and is the common form found about barns, houses, warehouses, etc., in the United States. This species' characteristics are: Ears moderate. Book excerpt: Rats have long been recognized as a valuable biomedical research model, notably in the investigation of aging, toxicology, addiction, and common human diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. In many instances, individuals conducting such research studies are charged with important responsibilities, including animal facility management, animal husbandry, veterinary care, regulatory compliance, and various experimental methodologies. With the advent of genetic manipulations and biomedical research technological advances such as bioimaging, the versatility and usefulness of the rat as an animal model has soared. The Laboratory Rat, Second Edition captures the multiple advances in this important animal model’s husbandry, veterinary care, and experimental methodology. This edition features augmented, expanded, and novel information on biology, anesthesia, analgesia, and experimental techniques benefiting personnel working with rats—from the animal care staff to the researcher and everyone in between. The book is also extremely useful to institutional animal care and use program supporters and elements, including animal care and use committees, institutional officials, occupational health and safety professionals, veterinary technicians, and veterinarians.

Book excerpt: In the present work, processes of cell proliferation, cell death, neurogenesis, and gliogenesis in the mouse hippocampus were studied. The mapping of distribution of hippocampal mitoses and counting of their number allowed a more precise definition of the data concerning the disposition and age reduction of proliferative sites in Ammon's horn and the dentate gyrus in the mouse. As a result, the following generalized scheme of development and age reduction of the germinal zones in the mouse hippocampus has been suggested. 1. Ammon's horn a) The ventricular zone, from the beginning of formation of the hippocampus (Ell) until E20 b) The suprafimbrial zone, from El6 until P7 2. Dentate gyrus a) The prime germinal zone ("the anlage of the dentate gyrus" of Stanfield and CowanI979b), from E15 until P3 b) The proliferative zone of the hilus, from P3 until Pl4 c) The subgranular zone, from P3 until adult age The adduced scheme needs some comments: 1. In the hippocampus (as well as in other formations of the developing brain), primary precursors of all types of cells of neuroectodermal origin are represented by cells of the ventricular zone. They give rise to cells of secondary germinal zones in the dentate gyrus and Ammon's horn and are direct precursors of the majority (if not of all) neuronal cells in Ammon's horn, the earliest originating generations of neurons in the dentate gyrus, hippocampal radial glial cells, and, evidently, of a considerable part of astroblasts and oligodendroblasts in Ammon's horn.
