Book Synopsis Manufacture and Refining of Raw Cane Sugar by : V.E. Baikow
Download or read book Manufacture and Refining of Raw Cane Sugar written by V.E. Baikow and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sugar Series, Vol. 2: Manufacture and Refining of Raw Cane Sugar focuses on the processes, methodologies, principles, and approaches involved in the manufacture and refining of raw cane sugar. The selection first offers information on sugar cane, harvesting and transportation to the factory, washing, disposal of wash-water and cleaning the juices, and extraction of juice. Discussions focus on disposal of bagasse, screw presses, cane carriers, juice cleaning, waste-water disposal, washing, cane weighing in field and factory, transportation, and sugar-producing plants. The manuscript then examines the sugar cane diffusion process, weighing, clarification, and liming of cane juice, filtration of mud from clarifiers, evaporation, and vacuum pans. The book ponders on boiling of raw sugar massecuites, crystallization by cooling and motion of low-grade massecuites and the exhaustion of final molasses, centrifugals and purging of massecuites, storing and shipping bulk sugar, and final molasses. The selection is a valuable source of data for researchers wanting to study the manufacture and refining of raw cane sugar.
Book Synopsis ICUMSA Methods of Sugar Analysis by : H. C. S. De Whalley
Download or read book ICUMSA Methods of Sugar Analysis written by H. C. S. De Whalley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ICUMSA Methods of Sugar Analysis presents the recommendations of the International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis (ICUMSA) that are based on thorough investigations of methods likely to prove practical and appropriate for the sugar industry. This book discusses the procedures for raw sugar polarization. Organized into two parts encompassing 21 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the various methods of determining sucrose by polarimetry, including the invertase method and the Jackson and Grill's method. This text then examines the methods of determining reducing sugars, which depends on knowing the amount of cuprous oxide precipitated from Fehling's solution. Other chapters consider the method to be applied for all beet products. This book discusses as well the principle of double sulfation that is necessary to ensure conversion of ash to sulfate. The final chapter deals with the evaluation of filter aids. This book is a valuable resource for chemists.

Book excerpt: A variety of analytical techniques have been developed to determine the content of sugars in honey, such as spectroscopic, chromatographic, and electrochemical ones. In this collection, the authors present the cross-section of results on sugar composition, obtained by contemporary analytical methods used in honey authentication. The following chapter addresses how sago fronds can be used to produce sugar, which contains cellobiose and glucose as the main sugars at about 10 g/L and 5 g/L, respectively. SFS has been used as the complete fermentation medium for the production of L-lactic acid using L. lactis IO-1 without the need for further amendment. Next, the authors address the impact of processing on the physicochemical characteristics and elemental composition of brown sugar produced in Brazil. 15 brown sugar samples of 5 distinct brands in 3 different were evaluated, and the moisture contents of the samples were determined by Karl Fischer titration, and thermogravimetric analysis determined the melting point. The typical process of producing solid sugar from sugarcane and mapping by-products and residues that are generated at each stage is presented. By-products are characterized and the technologies prominent in energy reuse are addressed. Recent studies, applications, trends, challenges and constraints for the future use of sucrose and sucrochemistry derivatives are also discussed. This represents a diversification-promising productive concept of green organic chemistry, based on an accessible, low-priced, ecological and renewable source, which stands in the short and long terms as the best opportunity to compete economically with petrochemicals. In addition, several factors related to the sustainability production of sugar as a raw material, that include innovative production processes, natural and artificial substitute sweeteners, geopolitics, medical research and new end uses are discussed. The concluding work seeks to examine the changes in the properties of elastomeric compounds as a consequence of conventional additives such as zinc oxide and stearic acid by sugar cane bagasse, a green option for obtaining environmentally friendly elastomeric compounds.
