Book excerpt: The modeling of the soft-output decoding of a binary linear block codeusing a Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation system (with reduced noise power) is the main focus of this work. With this model, it is possible to provide bit error performance approximations to help in the evaluation of the performance of binary linear block codes. As well, the model can be used in the design of communications systems which require knowledge of the characteristics of the channel, such as combined source-channel coding. Assuming an Additive White Gaussian Noise channel model, soft-output Log Likelihood Ratio (LLR) values are modeled to be Gaussian distributed. The bit error performance for a binary linear code over an AWGN channel can then be approximated using the Q-function that is used for BPSK systems. Simulation results are presented which show that the actual bit error performance of the code is very well approximated by the LLR approximation, especially for low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). A new measure of the coding gain achievable through the use of a code is introduced by comparing the LLR variance to that of an equivalently scaled BPSK system. Furthermore, arguments are presented which show that the approximation requires fewer samples than conventional simulation methods to obtain the same confidence in the bit error probability value. This translates into fewer computations and therefore, less time is needed to obtain performance results. Other work was completed that uses a discrete Fourier Transform technique to calculate the weight distribution of a linear code. The weight distribution of a code is defined by the number of codewords which have a certain number of ones in the codewords. For codeword lengths of small to moderate size, this method is faster and provides an easily implementable and methodical approach over other methods. This technique has the added advantage over other techniques of being able to methodically calculate the number of codewords of a particular Hamming weight instead of calculating the entire weight distribution of the code.

These codes break down when they are transmitted over channels with memory, which is in fact what real-world channels look like since errors often occur in bursts. Therefore, these systems employ interleaving to spread the errors so that the channel looks more or less memoryless (for the decoder) at the cost of added delay and complexity. In addition, they fail to exploit the memory of the channel which increases the capacity for a wide class of channels. On the other hand, most channels with memory do not have simple and mathematically tractable models, making the design of suitable channel codes more challenging and possibly not practical. Recently, a new model has been proposed known as the queue-based channel (QBC) which is simple enough for mathematical analysis and complex enough for modeling wireless fading channels. In this work, we examine the performance of linear block codes when transmitted over this channel. We break down our focus into two parts. First, we investigate the maximum likelihood decoding of binary linear block codes over the QBC. Since it is well known that for binary symmetric memoryless channels, maximum likelihood decoding reduces to minimum Hamming distance decoding, our objective here is to explore whether there exists a similar relation between these two decoding schemes when the channel does have memory. We give a partial answer for the case of perfect and quasi perfect codes. Next, we study Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and analyze their performance when transmitted over the QBC under the assumption of bounded distance decoding. In particular, we examine the two interleaving strategies encountered when dealing with non-binary codes over a binary input channel; namely, symbol interleaving and bit interleaving. We compare these two interleaving schemes analytically and show that symbol interleaving always outperforms bit interleaving. Non-interleaved Reed-Solomon codes are also covered. We derive some useful expressions pertaining to the calculation of the probability of codeword error. The performance of non-interleaved RS codes are compared to that of interleaved ones for the simplest scenario of the QBC which is the additive (first-order) Markov noise channel with non-negative noise correlation.

Book excerpt: In recent years, binary code analysis, i.e., applying program analysis directly at the machine code level, has become an increasingly important topic of study. This is driven to a large extent by the information security community, where security auditing of closed-source software and analysis of malware are important applications. Since most of the high-level semantics of the original source code are lost upon compilation to executable code, static analysis is intractable for, e.g., fine-grained information flow analysis of binary code. Dynamic analysis, however, does not suffer in the same way from reduced accuracy in the absence of high-level semantics, and is therefore also more readily applicable to binary code. Since fine-grained dynamic analysis often requires recording detailed information about every instruction execution, scalability can become a significant challenge. In this thesis, we address the scalability challenges of two powerful dynamic analysis methods whose widespread use has, so far, been impeded by their lack of scalability: dynamic slicing and instruction trace alignment. Dynamic slicing provides fine-grained information about dependencies between individual instructions, and can be used both as a powerful debugging aid and as a foundation for other dynamic analysis techniques. Instruction trace alignment provides a means for comparing executions of two similar programs and has important applications in, e.g., malware analysis, security auditing, and plagiarism detection. We also apply our work on scalable dynamic analysis in two novel approaches to improve fuzzing — a popular random testing technique that is widely used in industry to discover security vulnerabilities. To use dynamic slicing, detailed information about a program execution must first be recorded. Since the amount of information is often too large to fit in main memory, existing dynamic slicing methods apply various time-versus-space trade-offs to reduce memory requirements. However, these trade-offs result in very high time overheads, limiting the usefulness of dynamic slicing in practice. In this thesis, we show that the speed of dynamic slicing can be greatly improved by carefully designing data structures and algorithms to exploit temporal locality of programs. This allows avoidance of the expensive trade-offs used in earlier methods by accessing recorded runtime information directly from secondary storage without significant random-access overhead. In addition to being a standalone contribution, scalable dynamic slicing also forms integral parts of our contributions to fuzzing. Our first contribution uses dynamic slicing and binary code mutation to automatically turn an existing executable into a test generator. In our experiments, this new approach to fuzzing achieved about an order of magnitude better code coverage than traditional mutational fuzzing and found several bugs in popular Linux software. The second work on fuzzing presented in this thesis uses dynamic slicing to accelerate the state-of-the-art fuzzer AFL by focusing the fuzzing effort on previously unexplored parts of the input space. For the second dynamic analysis technique whose scalability we sought to improve — instruction trace alignment — we employed techniques used in speech recognition and information retrieval to design what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first general approach to aligning realistically long program traces. We show in our experiments that this method is capable of producing meaningful alignments even in the presence of significant syntactic differences stemming from, for example, the use of different compilers or optimization levels.

To do this efficiently, one needs a mathematical model that accurately predicts system behavior. Two basic problems arise in mathematical modeling: the problem of identifying a system and the problem of applying a model to the system analysis. System identification consists of selecting a class of mathematical objects to describe fundamental properties of the system behavior. We use a specific class of hidden Markov models (HMMs) to model communication systems. This model was introduced by C. E. Shannon more than 50 years ago as a Noisy Discrete Channel with a finite number of states. The model is described by a finite number of matrices whose elements are estimated on the basis of experimental data. We develop several methods of model identification and show their relationship to other methods of data analysis, such as spectral methods, autoregressive moving average CARMA) approximations, and rational transfer function approximations.
