Book excerpt: This text provides a comprehensive introduction to Berezin–Toeplitz operators on compact Kähler manifolds. The heart of the book is devoted to a proof of the main properties of these operators which have been playing a significant role in various areas of mathematics such as complex geometry, topological quantum field theory, integrable systems, and the study of links between symplectic topology and quantum mechanics. The book is carefully designed to supply graduate students with a unique accessibility to the subject. The first part contains a review of relevant material from complex geometry. Examples are presented with explicit detail and computation; prerequisites have been kept to a minimum. Readers are encouraged to enhance their understanding of the material by working through the many straightforward exercises.

This book is a self-contained exposition of the spectral theory of Toeplitz operators with piecewise continuous symbols and singular integral operators with piecewise continuous coefficients. It includes an introduction to Carleson curves, Muckenhoupt weights, weighted norm inequalities, local principles, Wiener-Hopf factorization, and Banach algebras generated by idempotents. Some basic phenomena in the field and the techniques for treating them came to be understood only in recent years and are comprehensively presented here for the first time. The material has been polished in an effort to make advanced topics accessible to a broad readership. The book is addressed to a wide audience of students and mathematicians interested in real and complex analysis, functional analysis and operator theory.

This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of Toeplitz operators has come to resemble more and more in recent years the classical theory of pseudodifferential operators. For instance, Toeplitz operators possess a symbolic calculus analogous to the usual symbolic calculus, and by symbolic means one can construct parametrices for Toeplitz operators and create new Toeplitz operators out of old ones by functional operations. If P is a self-adjoint pseudodifferential operator on a compact manifold with an elliptic symbol that is of order greater than zero, then it has a discrete spectrum. Also, it is well known that the asymptotic behavior of its eigenvalues is closely related to the behavior of the bicharacteristic flow generated by its symbol. It is natural to ask if similar results are true for Toeplitz operators. In the course of answering this question, the authors explore in depth the analogies between Toeplitz operators and pseudodifferential operators and show that both can be viewed as the "quantized" objects associated with functions on compact contact manifolds.

Book excerpt: Applying functional analysis and operator theory to some concrete asymptotic problems of linear algebra, this book contains results on the stability of projection methods, deals with asymptotic inverses and Moore-Penrose inversion of large Toeplitz matrices, and embarks on the asymptotic behaviour of the norms of inverses, the pseudospectra, the singular values, and the eigenvalues of large Toeplitz matrices. The approach is heavily based on Banach algebra techniques and nicely demonstrates the usefulness of C*-algebras and local principles in numerical analysis, including classical topics as well as results and methods from the last few years. Though employing modern tools, the exposition is elementary and points out the mathematical background behind some interesting phenomena encountered with large Toeplitz matrices. Accessible to readers with basic knowledge in functional analysis, the book addresses graduates, teachers, and researchers and should be of interest to everyone who has to deal with infinite matrices (Toeplitz or not) and their large truncations.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is a self-contained introduction to some problems for Toeplitz matrices that are placed in the borderland between linear algebra and functional analysis. The text looks at Toeplitz matrices with rational symbols, and focuses attention on the asymptotic behavior of the singular values, which includes the behavior of the norms, the norms of the inverses, and the condition numbers as special cases. The text illustrates that the asymptotics of several linear algebra characteristics depend in a fascinating way on functional analytic properties of infinite matrices. Many convergence results can very comfortably be obtained by working with appropriate C*-algebras, while refinements of these results, for example, estimates of the convergence speed, nevertheless require hard analysis.

Book excerpt: This unique book is devoted to the detailed study of the recently discovered commutative C*-algebras of Toeplitz operators on the Bergman space over the unit disk. Surprisingly, the key point to understanding their structure and classifying them lies in the hyperbolic geometry of the unit disk. The book develops a number of important problems whose successful solution was made possible and is based on the specific features of the Toeplitz operators from these commutative algebras.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to Toeplitz and singular integral operators with symbols that have discontinuities of the oscillating type. Criteria for the normal solvability of such operators are established and several methods for describing the kernel and image spaces of the operators are presented. The approach is based on the idea of modelling discontinuities with an "infinite index" by appropriate inner functions, especially by infinite Blaschke products. The corresponding techniques have been elaborated by the authors during the last two decades, and they are applicable to both symbols with slowly and rapidly increasing arguments. Moreover, the book reveals exciting connections between invariant subspaces of the shift operator, bases in Banach spaces, and various classes of entire and meromorphic functions. The book aims at making advanced topics accessible to a broad readership. It is addressed to graduate and postgraduate students and to mathematicians interested in functional analysis, the theory of functions of a complex variable, or mathematical physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers Toeplitz operators, Hankel operators, and composition operators on both the Bergman space and the Hardy space. The setting is the unit disk and the main emphasis is on size estimates of these operators: boundedness, compactness, and membership in the Schatten classes. Most results concern the relationship between operator-theoretic properties of these operators and function-theoretic properties of the inducing symbols. Thus a good portion of the book is devoted to the study of analytic function spaces such as the Bloch space, Besov spaces, and BMOA, whose elements are to be used as symbols to induce the operators we study. The book is intended for both research mathematicians and graduate students in complex analysis and operator theory. The prerequisites are minimal; a graduate course in each of real analysis, complex analysis, and functional analysis should sufficiently prepare the reader for the book. Exercises and bibliographical notes are provided at the end of each chapter. These notes will point the reader to additional results and problems. Kehe Zhu is a professor of mathematics at the State University of New York at Albany. His previous books include Theory of Bergman Spaces (Springer, 2000, with H. Hedenmalm and B. Korenblum) and Spaces of Holomorphic Functions in the Unit Ball (Springer, 2005). His current research interests are holomorphic function spaces and operators acting on them.
