Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 1, , course: Agriculture, language: English, abstract: Teff is a major staple cereal crop in Ethiopia. The need for its production as a staple food is increasing from year to year; however, its productivity is limited, amongst others, by the use of improper sowing methods and inappropriate seed rates. These effects were examined in this present study. Row planting and optimizing seed rate should be in place to increase the productivity of the crop. A field experiment was conducted at Wolaita Sodo Agricultural College Farm, during the 2018/19 main cropping season under rain-fed condition, with the objective of evaluating the response of teff to seeding rates and sowing methods on phenology, growth, yield components and yield of teff. Factorial combinations of two sowing methods (Row and broadcast) and five seeding rates were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Data related to phenology, growth, yield and yield attributes, were collected and analyzed using Gestate software. Plant parameters such as days to panicle emergence, lodging %, number of total and effect tillers per plant and grain yield were significantly affected by the interaction effect of sowing methods and seed rates. Plots sown with low seeding rate combined with row planting gave high grain yield. Therefore, using treatment combinations of seeding rate of 2.5 kg ha−1 together with the row planting can be advised for teff production in the study area. However, repeated experiment over different soil type, seasons and locations necessitates for conclusive recommendation.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: Good, Bahir Dar University (College of Agriculture and Environmental Science), course: Agricultural economics, language: English, abstract: This study was aimed at analyzing value chain of Groundnut in Pawi Woreda, Metekel Zone, Beni-shangul Gumuz Region with specific objectives of identifying groundnut value chain and examining the performance of actors in the chain; analyzing the determinants of groundnut supply to the market in the study area; and identifying and map marketing channels. The data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data for this study were collected from 155 farmers, 30 traders and 25 consumers through using questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and Econometrics models were used to analyze the collected data. Results show that the main groundnut value chain actors in the study area groundnut producers/farmer, input suppliers, local assembler, wholesalers, retailers, Processers and consumers. It is also found out that groundnut passes through several intermediaries with little value being added before reaching the end users. The chain is governed by wholesalers and Processers who have capital advantage over the other chain actors. Therefore, farmers are forced to capture a lower share of profit margin. The result of OLS regression model indicated that marketable supply is significantly affected by sex of household head, age of household head, agricultural extension service, owner ship of transport facility, distance of the nearest market and quantity of groundnut produced. Therefore, policy aiming at increasing farmers’ access to modern inputs, developing and improving infrastructure, gender consideration, and improving extension system are recommended to accelerate the chain’s development.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: B+, , course: Management, language: English, abstract: Saving and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs) are the main financial solution of the people who have low income level. But they have their own challenges that retard their financial solution to their members and the economical contribution to a country. In Kalu Woreda, the development of SACCOs is low due to the existence of different challenges. The research design is cross sectional descriptive research. Primary and secondary sources of data were used. Stratified systematic random probability sampling methods were employed to select the sample respondents. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistical methods & simple index model analysis methods. Lack of knowledge and capacity of management committees and poor members’ participation, lack of transparency and accountability, lack of appropriate support from cooperative promoters and NGOs, and non awareness of the existing opportunities by the members are the main findings. Providing member driven services, providing appropriate training, education, and information to all stakeholders, and recommending Micro Financial Institutions to give up their unfair competition with cooperatives are the possible recommendations. Key words: challenges, prospects, saving, credit, and cooperatives.

Maize is one of the most important cereal crops in the world. It ranks third in world production after wheat and rice. Ethiopia is the fourth largest maize producing country in Africa, and first in the East African region in terms of production. Presently maize is widely grown in most parts of the world over a wide range of environmental conditions ranging between 50o latitude north and south of the equator. Maize is an important field crop in terms of area coverage, production and utilization in Ethiopia. It ranks second in area coverage (after teff) and first in total production among cereals. It is grown for its food and feed values and one of the most important staples and cash crops and the main sources of calories. In view of its high demand for food grains and high yield per unit area, maize has been among the leading food grains selected to achieve food self-sufficiency in Ethiopia. The major maize producing regions in Ethiopia are Oromia, Amhara, and SNNPRS in descending order. The national average productivity of maize was 4.09 ton ha-1. In SNNPRS, maize ranked first in terms of area coverage and production among cereals and its average yield was 3.93 ton ha-1. Wolaita zone is one of the most important maize producing zones in SNNPR State. According to CSA report, at Wolaita zone, maize is the first leading crops among cereals in area coverage, and its zonal average yield was 3.01 tha-1.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 1,3, Otto Beisheim School of Management Vallendar, language: English, abstract: The aim of this thesis is to come up with a typology of marketing flop areas. Therefore I will present 90 marketing failures and analyze them in regard to the obvious and less obvious reasons for the failure.1 Furthermore, the case studies will be categorized according to the marketing function in which the mistake occurred. I will then present characteristics common to the cases in each category. To ease the accessibility of the text, references will only appear in the tables integrated into the section. In the second part of this thesis, three cases will be analyzed in-depth concerning how the decisions causing the marketing mistake were made. Therefore I will provide a summary of the decision in question as well as of its objectives and consequences, to then retrace the different steps that lead to the wrong decision. For each of these cases, I will also outline how the failure could have been prevented. Finally, I will shortly summarize the most important results of my research. I will also mention which limitations I encountered while preparing this thesis, and suggest further questions that, in my mind, are relevant to research in the field of marketing flops.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Veterinary medicine, Addis Ababa University (College of veterinary medicine and agriculture), course: DVM THESIS, language: English, abstract: This study aimed to estimate the incidence of human dog bites, describe characteristics of bites and to identify risk factors for dog bites in Lemu-Bilbilo district. A retrospective analysis of suspected rabies cases (dog bites) in Lemu- Bilbilo district during the period 2013/2014 (n=1 year) was done. A total of 316 bite injuries inflicted by rabies-suspected animals were reported, giving a mean annual incidence of 137 cases per 100,000. Males (56.6%) were more at risk than females (43.4%). The proportion of children (0-19 aged) bitten was relatively higher than that of adults. 34.2% of victims were bitten by neighbour dogs. Domestic dogs were involved in 95% of the human bite cases, whereas man (1.9%), donkey (1.6%), cattle (0.9%), wild animal (0.3%) and horse (0.3%) played a minor role. 94.3 % of the victims mentioned that the disease (rabies) status of the dogs involved in the bite incidents was rabid. Rabies-suspected case reports were most frequently occurred during August and October in each year. This study revealed that incidences of humans being bitten by dogs suspected of rabies are common in Lemu-Bilbilo, involve mostly children and predominantly occur during autumn. Rigorous surveillance to determine the status of rabies and the risk factors for human rabies, and increased educational awareness of people about the risk of dog bites and rabies at national level is necessary, particularly for children as well as formulation and institution of appropriate rabies-control policies, is required.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on commercial transformation of smallholders makes little distinction between market orientation (production decision based on market signals) and market participation (sale of output). This paper analyzes the determinants of market orientation and market participation in Ethiopia separately and examines if market orientation translates into market participation. Empirical results show that market orientation translates strongly into market participation. The key implication of this study is that policy, technological, organizational and institutional interventions aimed at promoting commercial transformation of subsistence agriculture should follow two-pronged approach: improving market orientation of smallholders at production level, and facilitating market entry and participation of households in output and input markets. Focusing on either may not be as effective in achieving the transformation.
