Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze of elementary, middle, an high school parents by exploring the perceptions of their own involvement with regard to their (a) race, (b) education level, (c) socio-economic status, and (d) number of children in the household under age 18. Joyce Epstein's six types of parental involvement supported by Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler's five levels of parental involvement provided the framework of this study. Findings indicated that while obstacles varied with respect to various parent demographic, the desire for parents to involved still existed. Results from this study not only contribute to current literature connected to parental involvement but also provide urban district stakeholders with further knowledge that might help increase, support, and encourage parental involvement, which has been shown to positively impact student achievement.

Book excerpt: Parental involvement is associated with students' educational achievement (Ahmad, 2010; Theodorou, 2008; Yanghee, 2009). Although parent involvement is linked to student success, schools frequently fail to establish a strong connection between home and school (Ahmad, 2010; Bourdieu, 1973; Brint, 2011), particularly in urban areas (Epstein & Sanders, 2006). Thus, a descriptive case study was used to examine the ideologies of both teachers and parents regarding the quality of their interrelationships with respect to how they both care for their children. Three varied data sets were used: (a) open-ended interviews, (b) field notes, and (c) a focus group. The data from the three sources were analyzed and coded using MAXQDA data analysis software. Results indicated that both teachers and parents prioritize communication and sharing information as two main strategies to improve engagement and optimize children's academic results. Additionally, results indicated that both groups expressed the hope that parental involvement in their children's educations would lead to better parent-teacher relationships and the children's continued motivation for learning. Further, results indicated four major social and cultural factors that influence the relationships between families and schools: attitudes and beliefs, unwelcome feelings due to a new school policy, gaps in home-school communication, and a lack of trust in special services. Moreover, creating a welcoming environment, improving home-school communication, and establishing early collaboration emerged as significant requirements for healthy parent-teacher relationships.

Taking education beyond the classroom and into the home may be a critically important mechanism for addressing this problem and reducing the negative impact of academic contexts where African American males are experiencing deficiencies in reading. Research by Renth, Buckley, & Puchner (2015) shows parent engagement plays a crucial role in students' academic success in school. However, not all parents are equipped with appropriate instructional tools to promote academic engagement within the home. Beecher & Sweeny (2008) noted that various instructional practices such as enrichment, differentiated instruction, and culturally relevant instruction can positively affect educational disparities in African American males. Their research employed a case study design to better understand parents' engagement with a digital personalized learning system and its influence on their African American boys' reading scores in an urban elementary school. The three literature review streams of the present study included educational disparities, parent engagement, and technology-based learning. Findings suggest that parents perceive Lexia as easily accessible and tailored to the individual learning needs of their child. Parents also reported noticeable improvements in the areas of comprehension and spelling. Furthermore, parents expressed a desire for additional digital learning resources to support academic engagement with their child.

Book excerpt: Originating in the 1960's with Head Start, the message regarding the value of parent involvement in children's education has exponentially grown more pronounced. In fact, such sweeping legislation as IDEA (1997) and Goals 2000: Educate America Act has mandated the inclusion of parents in their children's education. Although the advantages of effective parent-school partnerships are well documented, the extent to which all socioeconomic groups are implementing such activities and reaping their benefits remains ambiguous. The foundational work of James Comer and Joyce Epstein addressed issues unique to parents and schools in lower-class, inner-city communities. For truly collaborative parent-school partnership to form and for the achievement of students to, in turn, increase, system-wide, long-term commitment to change must take place. Epstein identified six types of involvement between families and schools, and articulated particular outcomes expected to result from each type. A study of the implementation of a parent involvement program was conducted at an urban elementary school in The Columbus Public School District. The purpose of the study was to determine if participation in a parent involvement program resulted in the expected outcomes outlined in Epstein's six-typology framework of parental involvement. The study also examined parents' motivations for participating in the program, their expectations of it, and their perceptions of the benefits accrued from participation. An ethnographic interview was conducted with one parent utilizing the methodology outlined by Spradley (1979). Parent interviews were evaluated to determine the effects of the parent involvement program.
