Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on techniques developed to evaluate the forming behaviour of tailor welded blanks (TWBs) in sheet metal manufacturing, this edited collection details compensation methods suited to mitigating the effects of springback. Making use of case studies and in-depth accounts of industry experience, this book gives a comprehensive overview of springback and provides essential solutions necessary to modern-day automotive engineers. Sheet metal forming is a major process within the automotive industry, with advancement of the technology including utilization of non-uniform sheet metal in order to produce light or strengthened body structures. This is critical in the reduction of vehicle weight in order to match increased consumer demand for better driving performance and improved fuel efficiency. Additionally, increasingly stringent international regulations regarding exhaust emissions require manufacturers to seek to lighten vehicles as much as possible. To aid engineers in optimizing lightweight designs, this comprehensive book covers topics by a variety of industry experts, including compensation by annealing, low-power welding, punch profile radius and tool-integrated springback measuring systems. It ends by looking at the future trends within the industry and the potential for further innovation within the field. This work will benefit car manufacturers and stamping plants that face springback issues within their production, particularly in the implementation of TWB production into existing facilities. It will also be of interest to students and researchers in automotive and aerospace engineering.

Topics include manufacturing at extreme speed, size, accuracy, methodology, use of resources, interdisciplinarity and more. Contributions from production and industrial engineering are welcome. Challenges from the areas of manufacturing, machines and production systems will be addressed. Production research constantly pushes the boundaries of what is feasible. The Congress "Production at the leading edge of technology" will highlight production processes that are advancing into areas that until recently were considered unfeasible, also in terms of methodology, use of resources and interdisciplinarity. But where does the search for new limits lead? Which limitations do we still have to overcome, which ones do we not want to overcome? The aim of the German-speaking colloquium is to establish connections between the research locations and to intensify the overall transfer of results and experience with industrial users.

Book excerpt: Through the integration of these features, the current research establishes a framework for design under uncertainty in sheet metal forming. The robust design model takes into account producibility requirements through failure analysis and uncertainties from forming conditions and material properties. The approach was demonstrated through a demonstration example of a wheelhouse stamping process used in automobile industry. In addition, model validation approaches taking uncertainty into account are demonstrated in a simulation of a sample flanging process. Overall, this research presents the methodology and feasibility of implementing the framework for design and optimization under uncertainty, which can certainly be generalized for other industrial cases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to friction and lubrication, springback affects the dimensional accuracy of stamped parts. Accurate prediction of springback is necessary in die design stage. Springback occurs after stamping and ejection of the part as result of elastic recovery of the part. To accurately predict springback through finite element analysis, the material model should be well defined for accurate simulation and prediction of stresses and strains after unloading. Despite the development of advanced material models that comprehensively describe the Bauschinger effect, transient behavior, permanent softening, and the unloading elastic modulus degradation, the prediction of springback is still not adequate for production parts. Dies are often recut several times, after the first tryouts, to compensate for springback and achieve the required part geometry. The material properties that affect the springback are studied and effect of each property is investigated. Results reveal that the E-modulus is the most important material property defining the elastic recovery of the material and springback. A methodology for determining an average E-modulus to provide accurate springback prediction is presented. The method is expanded to determine the variation of E-modulus with plastic strain to simulate the springback in real industrial part and achieve more accurate springback prediction before manufacturing a production die. Finally, effect of post-stretching method on reduction of springback is investigated both experimentally and numerically.

Book excerpt: Over the last 15 years, the application of innovative steel concepts in the automotive industry has increased steadily. Numerical simulation technology of hot forming of high-strength steel allows engineers to modify the formability of hot forming steel metals and to optimize die design schemes. Theories, Methods and Numerical Technology of Sheet Metal Cold and Hot Forming focuses on hot and cold forming theories, numerical methods, relative simulation and experiment techniques for high-strength steel forming and die design in the automobile industry. Theories, Methods and Numerical Technology of Sheet Metal Cold and Hot Forming introduces the general theories of cold forming, then expands upon advanced hot forming theories and simulation methods, including: the forming process, constitutive equations, hot boundary constraint treatment, and hot forming equipment and experiments. Various calculation methods of cold and hot forming, based on the authors’ experience in commercial CAE software for sheet metal forming, are provided, as well as a discussion of key issues, such as hot formability with quenching process, die design and cooling channel design in die, and formability experiments. Theories, Methods and Numerical Technology of Sheet Metal Cold and Hot Forming will enable readers to develop an advanced knowledge of hot forming, as well as to apply hot forming theories, calculation methods and key techniques to direct their die design. It is therefore a useful reference for students and researchers, as well as automotive engineers.

Book excerpt: The application of computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques is becoming essential in modern metal-forming technology. Thus process modeling for the determination of deformation mechanics has been a major concern in research . In light of these developments, the finite element method--a technique by which an object is decomposed into pieces and treated as isolated, interacting sections--has steadily assumed increased importance. This volume addresses advances in modern metal-forming technology, computer-aided design and engineering, and the finite element method.

Book excerpt: Applied Metal Forming: Including FEM Analysis describes metal forming theory and how experimental techniques can be used to study any metal forming operation with great accuracy. For each primary class of processes, such as forging, rolling, extrusion, wiredrawing, and sheet-metal forming, it explains how FEA (Finite Element Analysis) can be applied with great precision to characterize the forming condition and in this way optimize the processes. FEA has made it possible to build very realistic FEM-models of any metal forming process, including complex three-dimensional forming operations, in which complex products are shaped by complex dies. Thus, using FEA it is now possible to visualize any metal forming process and to study strain, stresses, and other forming conditions inside the parts being manufactured as they develop throughout the process.
