Book excerpt: Systems composed with a sum of interconnected sub-systems offer the advantages of a better flexibility and redundancy for an increased reliability. One of the largest and biggest system based on this concept ever devised by man is the interconnected power system.Phenomena encountered in the newest interconnected power systems are more and more nonlinear and the development of new tools for their study is od major concern. Among the existing tools, this PhD work presents the development and the application of the Normal Form theory to the study of the interactions existing on an interconnected power system. The specific objectives of this PhD work are the development of the Normal Form theory up to the third order, the application of this method to study power system interarea oscillations and the gain of the developed method for the study of stability of power systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume originates from the Third Nonlinear Control Workshop "- namics, Bifurcations and Control", held in Kloster Irsee, April 1-3 2001. As the preceding workshops held in Paris (2000) and in Ghent (1999), it was organized within the framework of Nonlinear Control Network funded by the European Union (http://www.supelec.fr/lss/NCN). The papers in this volume center around those control problems where phenomena and methods from dynamical systems theory play a dominant role. Despite the large variety of techniques and methods present in the c- tributions, a rough subdivision can be given into three areas: Bifurcation problems, stabilization and robustness, and global dynamics of control s- tems. A large part of the fascination in nonlinear control stems from the fact that is deeply rooted in engineering and mathematics alike. The contributions to this volume reflect this double nature of nonlinear control. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the contributors and the referees for their careful work. Furthermore, it is our pleasure to thank Franchise Lamnabhi-Lagarrigue, the coordinator of our network, for her s- port in organizing the workshop and the proceedings and for the tremendous efforts she puts into this network bringing the cooperation between the d- ferent groups to a new level. In particular, the exchange and the active p- ticipation of young scientists, also reflected in the Pedagogical Schools within the Network, is an asset for the field of nonlinear control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a compilation of lectures delivered at the São Paulo School of Advanced Sciences on Nonlinear Dynamics, categorized into four groups: parametric resonance, nonlinear modal analysis and model reduction, synchronization, and strongly nonlinear dynamics. Interwoven seamlessly, these groups cover a wide range of topics, from fundamental concepts to practical applications, catering to both introductory and advanced readers. The first group, consisting of chapters 1 and 2, serves as an introduction to the theory of parametric resonance and the dynamics of parametrically excited slender structures. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 form the second group, offering insights into normal forms, nonlinear normal modes, and nonlinear system identification. Chapters 6 and 7 delve into asynchronous modes of structural vibration and master-slave topologies for time signal distribution within synchronous systems, respectively, representing the third group. Finally, the last four chapters tackle the fourth group, exploring nonlinear dynamics of variable mass oscillators, advanced analytical methods for strong nonlinear vibration problems, chaos theory, and dynamic integrity from the perspectives of safety and design. This book harmoniously combines theoretical depth and practical relevance to provide a comprehensive understanding of nonlinear dynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ?eld of applied nonlinear dynamics has attracted scientists and engineers across many different disciplines to develop innovative ideas and methods to study c- plex behavior exhibited by relatively simple systems. Examples include: population dynamics, ?uidization processes, applied optics, stochastic resonance, ?ocking and ?ightformations, lasers, andmechanicalandelectricaloscillators. Acommontheme among these and many other examples is the underlying universal laws of nonl- ear science that govern the behavior, in space and time, of a given system. These laws are universal in the sense that they transcend the model-speci?c features of a system and so they can be readily applied to explain and predict the behavior of a wide ranging phenomena, natural and arti?cial ones. Thus the emphasis in the past decades has been in explaining nonlinear phenomena with signi?cantly less att- tion paid to exploiting the rich behavior of nonlinear systems to design and fabricate new devices that can operate more ef?ciently. Recently, there has been a series of meetings on topics such as Experimental Chaos, Neural Coding, and Stochastic Resonance, which have brought together many researchers in the ?eld of nonlinear dynamics to discuss, mainly, theoretical ideas that may have the potential for further implementation. In contrast, the goal of the 2007 ICAND (International Conference on Applied Nonlinear Dynamics) was focused more sharply on the implementation of theoretical ideas into actual - vices and systems.

Especially significant are the following: (1) We have developed new analytical and numerical results pertaining to imposing constraints in multi-body dynamical modeling and numerical simulation. We have developed an extension of existing penalty methods for constrained multibody dynamics, including some significant convergence proofs. (2) We have developed a power principle which permits the efficient construction of stabilizing control laws for systems described by nonlinear systems of coupled ordinary and partial differential equations. (3) We have initiated a study of symbol manipulation methods to derive polynomial-type nonlinear feedback control laws for dynamical systems with polynomial nonlinearities. A general MACSYMA symbolic computer code has been developed and studies are under way on several test problems. (kr).

Book excerpt: The nonlinear normal modes of a parametrically excited cantilever beam are constructed by directly applying the method of multiple scales to the governing integral-partial differential equation and associated boundary conditions. The effect of the inertia and curvature nonlin earities and the parametric excitation on the spatial distribution of the deflection is examined. The results are compared with those obtained by using a single-mode discretization. In the absence of linear viscous and quadratic damping, it is shown that there are nonlinear normal modes, as defined by Rosenberg, even in the presence of a principal parametric excitation. Furthermore, the nonlinear mode shape obtained with the direct approach is compared with that obtained with the discretization approach for some values of the excitation frequency. In the single-mode discretization, the spatial distribution of the deflection is assumed a priori to be given by the linear mode shape ¢n, which is parametrically excited, as Equation (41). Thus, the mode shape is not influenced by the nonlinear curvature and nonlinear damping. On the other hand, in the direct approach, the mode shape is not assumed a priori; the nonlinear effects modify the linear mode shape ¢n. Therefore, in the case of large-amplitude oscillations, the single-mode discretization may yield inaccurate mode shapes. References 1. Vakakis, A. F., Manevitch, L. I., Mikhlin, Y. v., Pilipchuk, V. We have collected a large number of results, scattered throughout the literature and presented them in a way to illustrate both the underlying common theme, as well as the diversity of problems and solutions. While most of the results are known in the literature, we added new material which we hope will also be of interest to the specialists in this field. The basic theory is discussed in chapters two and three. Improved results are obtained in chapter four in the case of stable limit sets. In chapter five we treat averaging over several angles; here the theory is less standardized, and even in our simplified approach we encounter many open problems. Chapter six deals with the definition of normal form. After making the somewhat philosophical point as to what the right definition should look like, we derive the second order normal form in the Hamiltonian case, using the classical method of generating functions. In chapter seven we treat Hamiltonian systems. The resonances in two degrees of freedom are almost completely analyzed, while we give a survey of results obtained for three degrees of freedom systems. The appendices contain a mix of elementary results, expansions on the theory and research problems.
