Book excerpt: Le travail présenté dans cette thèse s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet industriel au sein du laboratoire de Biotechnologie des établissements SOUFFLET. L’objectif de ce projet est de créer des modèles et des techniques d’optimisation utilisables pour la conduite des procédés de fermentation en milieu solide (FMS). La FMS met en œuvre des biotechnologies consistant à utiliser des microorganismes ou des produits issus de ces microorganismes dans des applications industrielles (bio-industries). Le procédé de FMS vise à assurer le développement le plus maîtrisé possible d’un microorganisme au sein du milieu solide, humidifié dans des conditions prédéfinies et contrôlable. Pour résoudre cette problématique, nous avons tout d’abord identifié les variables d’état essentielles pour le procédé de FMS. A partir de ces variables, nous avons mis au point l’outil des plans d’expériences. Ces plans d’expériences nous ont permis de définir les configurations à tester pour parvenir à une modélisation du système de production en utilisant les méthodes issues de l’intelligence artificielle telles que les réseaux de neurones RBF. Ce modèle neuronale a été par la suite hybridé a des approches métaheuristiques, afin d’optimiser la structure et trouver la meilleur configuration. Ces approches hybrides ont été tout d’abord validées sur des exemples d’applications de l’état de l’art puis sur un cas d’application industriel. Ces approches ont surtout permet une amélioration significative de la production par FMS

Each chapter of the book is complementary to the other chapters. They all are based on presentations of reputed international researchers and address the latest progress in the field. Professor Karim ALLAF heads a research team working on the intensification of eco-processes at La Rochelle University. He is a physicist and an expert in the thermodynamics of “instantaneity”. Dr. Tamara ALLAF is the R&D manager of ABCAR-DIC Process Company. A chemical engineer, she obtained her Ph.D. in innovative extraction processes.

Costs werecompared for a number of EBPR alternatives and chemical precipitation. Thisstudy was not limited to a single specific plant, but was conducted inbroader context so that those conditions under which either chemical orenhanced biological phosphorus removal was more cost-effective could beidentified.
