This book was released on 1997 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Elements of Operator Theory is a concept-driven textbook that includes a significant expansion of the problems and solutions used to illustrate the principles of operator theory. Written in a user-friendly, motivating style intended to avoid the formula-computational approach, fundamental topics are presented in a systematic fashion, i.e., set theory, algebraic structures, topological structures, Banach spaces, and Hilbert spaces, culminating with the Spectral Theorem. Included in this edition: more than 150 examples, with several interesting counterexamples that demonstrate the frontiers of important theorems, as many as 300 fully rigorous proofs, specially tailored to the presentation, 300 problems, many with hints, and an additional 20 pages of problems for the second edition. *This self-contained work is an excellent text for the classroom as well as a self-study resource for researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is the first of its kind exclusively devoted to counterexamples in operator theory and includes over 500 problems on bounded and unbounded linear operators in Hilbert spaces. This volume is geared towards graduate students studying operator theory, and the author has designated the difficulty level for each counterexample, indicating which ones are also suitable for advanced undergraduate students. The first half of the book focuses on bounded linear operators, including counterexamples in the areas of operator topologies, matrices of bounded operators, square roots, the spectrum, operator exponentials, and non-normal operators. The second part of the book is devoted to unbounded linear operators in areas such as closedness and closability, self-adjointness, normality, commutativity, and the spectrum, concluding with a chapter that features some open problems. Chapters begin with a brief “Basics” section for the readers’ reference, and many of the counterexamples included are the author’s original work. Counterexamples in Operator Theory can be used by students in graduate courses on operator theory and advanced matrix theory. Previous coursework in advanced linear algebra, operator theory, and functional analysis is assumed. Researchers, quantum physicists, and undergraduate students studying functional analysis and operator theory will also find this book to be a useful reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for third and fourth year university mathematics students (and Master students) as well as lecturers and tutors in mathematics and anyone who needs the basic facts on Operator Theory (e.g. Quantum Mechanists). The main setting for bounded linear operators here is a Hilbert space. There is, however, a generous part on General Functional Analysis (not too advanced though). There is also a chapter on Unbounded Closed Operators. The book is divided into two parts. The first part contains essential background on all of the covered topics with the sections: True or False Questions, Exercises, Tests and More Exercises. In the second part, readers may find answers and detailed solutions to the True or False Questions, Exercises and Tests.Another virtue of the book is the variety of the topics and the exercises and the way they are tackled. In many cases, the approaches are different from what is known in the literature. Also, some very recent results from research papers are included.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the important aspects of spectral theory, in particular, the completeness of generalised eigenvectors, Riesz bases, semigroup theory, families of analytic operators, and Gribov operator acting in the Bargmann space. Recent mathematical developments of perturbed non-self-adjoint operators are discussed with the completeness of the space of generalized eigenvectors, bases on Hilbert and Banach spaces and asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of these operators. Most results in the book are motivated by physical problems, such as the perturbation method for sound radiation by a vibrating plate in a light fluid, Gribov operator in Bargmann space and other applications in mathematical physics and mechanics. This book is intended for students, researchers in the field of spectral theory of linear non self-adjoint operators, pure analysts and mathematicians.

Book excerpt: rii application of linear operators on a Hilbert space. We begin with a chapter on the geometry of Hilbert space and then proceed to the spectral theory of compact self adjoint operators; operational calculus is next presented as a nat ural outgrowth of the spectral theory. The second part of the text concentrates on Banach spaces and linear operators acting on these spaces. It includes, for example, the three 'basic principles of linear analysis and the Riesz Fredholm theory of compact operators. Both parts contain plenty of applications. All chapters deal exclusively with linear problems, except for the last chapter which is an introduction to the theory of nonlinear operators. In addition to the standard topics in functional anal ysis, we have presented relatively recent results which appear, for example, in Chapter VII. In general, in writ ing this book, the authors were strongly influenced by re cent developments in operator theory which affected the choice of topics, proofs and exercises. One of the main features of this book is the large number of new exercises chosen to expand the reader's com prehension of the material, and to train him or her in the use of it. In the beginning portion of the book we offer a large selection of computational exercises; later, the proportion of exercises dealing with theoretical questions increases. We have, however, omitted exercises after Chap ters V, VII and XII due to the specialized nature of the subject matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the modern study of Hilbert space operators there has been an increasingly subtle involvement with analytic function theory. This is evident in the analysis of subnormal operators, Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators, for example. On the other hand the operator theoretic viewpoint of interpolation by analytic functions is a powerful one. There has been significant activity in recent years, within these enriching interactions, and the time seemed right for an overview ot the main lines of development. The Advanced Study Institute 'Operators and Function Theory' in Lancaster, 1984, was devoted to this, and this book contains ex panded versions (and one contraction) of the main lecture prog ramme. These varied articles, by prominent researchers, include, for example, a survey of recent results on subnormal operators, recent work of Soviet mathematicians on Hankel and Toeplitz operators, expositions of the decomposition theory and inter polation theory for Bergman, Besov and Bloch spaces, with applic ations for special operators, the Krein space approach to inter polation problems, •• and much more. It is hoped that these proceedings will bring all this lively mathematics to a wider audience. Sincere thanks are due to the Scientific Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation for the generous support that made the institute possible, and to the London Mathematical Society and the British Council for important additional support. Warm thanks also go to Barry Johnson and the L.M.S. for early guidance, and to my colleague Graham Jameson for much organisational support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jordan's classification theorem for linear transformations on a finite-dimensional vector space is a natural highlight of the deep relationship between linear algebra and the arithmetical properties of polynomial rings. Because the methods and results of finite-dimensional linear algebra seldom extend to or have analogs in infinite-dimensional operator theory, it is therefore remarkable to have a class of operators which has a classification theorem analogous to Jordan's classical result and has properties closely related to the arithmetic of the ring $H^{\infty}$ of bounded analytic functions in the unit disk. $C_0$ is such a class and is the central object of study in this book.A contraction operator belongs to $C_0$ if and only if the associated functional calculus on $H^{\infty}$ has a nontrivial kernel. $C_0$ was discovered by Bela Sz.-Nagy and Ciprian Foias in their work on canonical models for contraction operators on Hilbert space. Besides their intrinsic interest and direct applications, operators of class $C_0$ are very helpful in constructing examples and counterexamples in other branches of operator theory. In addition, $C_0$ arises in certain problems of control and realization theory. In this survey work, the author provides a unified and concise presentation of a subject that was covered in many articles. The book describes the classification theory of $C_0$ and relates this class to other subjects such as general dilation theory, stochastic realization, representations of convolution algebras, and Fredholm theory. This book should be of interest to operator theorists as well as theoretical engineers interested in the applications of operator theory. In an effort to make the book as self-contained as possible, the author gives an introduction to the theory of dilations and functional models for contraction operators. Prerequisites for this book are a course in functional analysis and an acquaintance with the theory of Hardy spaces in the unit disk. In addition, knowledge of the trace class of operators is necessary in the chapter on weak contractions.

Zaanen, one of the pioneers of functional analysis, and eminent expert in modern integration theory and the theory of vector lattices, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The book opens with biographical notes, including Zaanen's curriculum vitae and list of publications. It contains a selection of original research papers which cover a broad spectrum of topics about operators and semigroups of operators on Banach lattices, analysis in function spaces and integration theory. Special attention is paid to the spectral theory of operators on Banach lattices; in particular, to the one of positive operators. Classes of integral operators arising in systems theory, optimization and best approximation problems, and evolution equations are also discussed. The book will appeal to a wide range of readers engaged in pure and applied mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of three major parts. The first two parts deal with general mathematical concepts and certain areas of operator theory. The third part is devoted to ill-posed problems. It can be read independently of the first two parts and presents a good example of applying the methods of calculus and functional analysis. The first part "Basic Concepts" briefly introduces the language of set theory and concepts of abstract, linear and multilinear algebra. Also introduced are the language of topology and fundamental concepts of calculus: the limit, the differential, and the integral. A special section is devoted to analysis on manifolds. The second part "Operators" describes the most important function spaces and operator classes for both linear and nonlinear operators. Different kinds of generalized functions and their transformations are considered. Elements of the theory of linear operators are presented. Spectral theory is given a special focus. The third part "Ill-Posed Problems" is devoted to problems of mathematical physics, integral and operator equations, evolution equations and problems of integral geometry. It also deals with problems of analytic continuation. Detailed coverage of the subjects and numerous examples and exercises make it possible to use the book as a textbook on some areas of calculus and functional analysis. It can also be used as a reference textbook because of the extensive scope and detailed references with comments.
