Book excerpt: One method of controlling the terminal phase of a space rendezvous between two vehicles is first to correct the flight path of the controlled vehicle so that a constant line of sight is established between the vehicles. This correction is accomplished by thrusting normal to the sight line in a direction to arrest the angular motion of this line. Once this collision course has been established, the second step is to control the closure rate for a safe approach along the line of sight. Adequate control of this maneuver requires range and closure-rate information. A combined analytical and preliminary simulation study was conducted to determine the ability of a human pilot to control the rendezvous by this method using visual sightings made during the initial collision-course control to obtain the range and closure rate. The analytical phase of the study reviewed the geometric relations between the vehicles and formed the basis for techniques to transform the angular sightings into range and closure rate. A preliminary simulation was then made to investigate the accuracy of these techniques. The simulation consisted of an analog computer, an oscilloscope to represent the view a pilot would have-with a stabilized sight, and a timer. Results indicate that pilots, using an optical sight and a timer, can successfully arrest the angular motion of the line of sight between two rendezvous vehicles and obtain relative range and closure rate with sufficient accuracy to perform the final braking maneuver successfully.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analog computing is one of the main pillars of Unconventional Computing. Almost forgotten for decades, we now see an ever-increasing interest in electronic analog computing because it offers a path to high-performance and highly energy-efficient computing. These characteristics are of great importance in a world where vast amounts of electric energy are consumed by today’s computer systems. Analog computing can deliver efficient solutions to many computing problems, ranging from general purpose analog computation to specialised systems like analog artificial neural networks. The book “Analog Computing” has established itself over the past decade as the standard textbook on the subject and has been substantially extended in this second edition, which includes more than 300 additional bibliographical entries, and has been expanded in many areas to include much greater detail. These enhancements will confirm this book’s status as the leading work in the field. It covers the history of analog computing from the Antikythera Mechanism to recent electronic analog computers and uses a wide variety of worked examples to provide a comprehensive introduction to programming analog computers. It also describes hybrid computers, digital differential analysers, the simulation of analog computers, stochastic computers, and provides a comprehensive treatment of classic and current analog computer applications. The last chapter looks into the promising future of analog computing.

Book excerpt: Progress in Astronautics and Rocketry, Volume 10: Technology of Lunar Exploration is an overview of the technical base of the lunar exploration problem. This volume is organized into six sections encompassing 35 that follow the various stages of accomplishment of a lunar mission, involving landing on or orbiting the moon and returning to the earth. The first section is devoted to the problem of trying to define the lunar environment, emphasizing the theories of the lunar environment as it relates to the internal structure of the moon. This section also describes some activities to achieve a reasonable theory concerning what might be encountered in some of the previous lunar flight programs. The second section explores the problems associated with the limitations imposed upon lunar missions by the launch vehicles and launching facilities. The third section looks at the spacecraft systems and techniques required for lunar missions, particularly the technology and specific subsystems in relation to the requirements imposed by specific lunar mission objectives. The fourth section deals with the actual landing on the moon and the subsequent surface operations, while the fifth section covers the lunar launch, return, flight re-entry, and subsequent landing on earth. The sixth section reports the status of the projects that represent the United States lunar exploration program, which integrates the technologies developed in the preceding sections into certain discrete projects.

Book excerpt: Guidance and Control - II focuses on the techniques and processes involved relative to the control of rockets, missiles, and other space vehicles. Divided into seven parts with 36 chapters, the book focuses first on active and passive control for space vehicles; advances in attitude control; the stabilization of earth satellites; and the theoretical and practical considerations of solar pressure attitude control for interplanetary space vehicles. The compilation also notes the use of gyrostabilizers on satellites, including the use of two-pulse attitude control and bank angle control for an asymmetric spinning satellite. Experiments on gyro rotor imbalance on a stable platform and various navigation and guidance systems are also presented. The book also looks at the use of sensors, the stellar techniques for interplanetary flights, and control of space vehicles. The text also gives emphasis on various mathematical equations used to measure fuel optimization in orbital rendezvous. Guidance techniques in lunar landing are also discussed. The compilation is important for readers interested in studying the methods, principles, and processes involved in the control of space vehicles.

Book excerpt: Advances in Space Science and Technology, Volume 5 looks into the major unsolved solar problems of thermodynamic structure, geometrical structure, velocity fields, flares and other transient phenomena, solar magnetic fields, and corpuscular emission. This book discusses the design, development, and testing of launching rockets. Organized into five chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the role of space observations in solar physics. This text then examines the progress in communication relay satellite techniques, which is a very important aspect of space technology. Other chapters provide a comprehensive review of solid propellant rocker technology, treating such subjects as factors affecting propellant performance, ignition, grain design, testing, quality control, and thrust vector control. This book discusses as well the characteristics of an environmental control compatible with requirements within the manned space vehicle. The final chapter deals with orbital operations. This book is a valuable resource for astronautical researchers, astronomers, and scientists.
