Book Synopsis Humic Substances by : Abdelhadi Makan
Download or read book Humic Substances written by Abdelhadi Makan and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-10-06 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Present in soil and water, humic substances are the most widespread organic compounds, naturally occurring from a physical, chemical, and microbiological transformation of biomolecules. They represent about 25% of the total organic carbon on the Earth and comprise up to 75% of the dissolved organic carbon in water, making them important for multiple environmental processes in both soil and aquatic systems. Despite many decades of extensive study, the formation mechanisms of humic substances are still a subject of discussion and controversy. This book examines the dynamics of humic substances, their physicochemical and biological properties, and methods for their extraction and characterization. The book also sheds light on recent advances and applications of humic substances in agriculture, environment, industry, and medicine.
Book Synopsis Brazilian Mangroves and Salt Marshes by : Yara Schaeffer-Novelli
Download or read book Brazilian Mangroves and Salt Marshes written by Yara Schaeffer-Novelli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-25 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new ecosystemic approach to the understanding of mangrove and salt marsh ecosystems. Brazil has one of the largest areas of mangroves in the world, where salt marshes might or might not be associated. Different landscapes comprise the extensive coastline, where mangrove and salt marsh species’ composition is discussed through the analysis of physiography, zonation, and succession processes. Both salt marsh and mangrove plants and the associated macroalgae will be characterized in their ecophysiological and phenological aspects, as well as genetic and epigenetic diversity. The chapters on microbial diversity and litterfall expose the well-known importance of these ecosystems as highly productive carbon sinks and pumps. The associated fauna of invertebrates (benthic meio and macrofaunas, especially brachyuran crabs) and vertebrates (fishes, birds, and mammals) are presented in a special section. The conservational approach encompasses issues, such as historical ecology, economic valuation, protected areas, environmental education, climate changes, and adaptive management.

Book Synopsis Crustaceans and the Biodiversity Crisis by : Frederick R. Schram
Download or read book Crustaceans and the Biodiversity Crisis written by Frederick R. Schram and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1999 with total page 1048 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important and extensive volume presents part of the Proceedings of the Fourth International Crustacean Congress held in Amsterdam in 1998. As the title implies, 'Crustaceans and the Biodiversity Crisis' was the general, underlying theme of all contributions at the congress. With the turn of the century, someone ought to 'assess the balance' of our natural environment and of the various branches of biology that study its rapidly declining diversity. From the five subthemes covered at the conference, those of (1) "Diversity in Time and Space" (including Systematics, Phylogeny, and Palaeontology), (2b) "Biogeography," (3c) "Larvae," and (4) "Physiology and Biochemistry" (including Molecular Biology and Genetics) are represented in this volume, along with a few contributions from other subthemes (e.g. (2a) "Invasive Crustacea," (3a) "Ecology," (3b) "Behaviour," and (5) "Fisheries and Aquaculture"). The book is primarily meant for scientists working at institutes involved in research on the group (Crustacea: marine, freshwater, or terrestrial) and/or the disciplines covered. Individual carcinologists working on one of the themes discussed in this volume, will find a wealth of interesting and timely contributions, as will other scientists working in marine or freshwater biology or in soil ecology.
