Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anaesthetics and Their Administration: A Text-Book for Medical and Dental Practitioners and Students The fourth edition of this text-book was edited by myself under the immediate supervision of the late Sir F. W. Hewitt, its original author. The responsibility for the statements and opinions contained in that edition was his. Since then the advance of the science of anaesthesia has been more rapid than in any similar period of time, except, perhaps, the years following its discovery. In consequence, large sections of this work have been entirely rewritten, and there is scarcely a page which has been allowed to stand unrevised. Sir Frederic Hewitt's breadth of mind and keenness for progress were so conspicuous that he would have been among the first to realise that much of the teaching current a decade ago has been rendered obsolete by recent developments. I hope that the opinions expressed in this edition would have commended themselves to him, if he had survived; right or wrong, however, the entire responsibility for the clinical teaching in this edition is solely mine, not his. As in the fourth edition, Mr. Digby Cotes-Preedy has been kind enough to be responsible for the chapter on the Medico-Legal Aspects of Surgical Anaesthesia, for which my best thanks are due to him. For the revision of the two chapters dealing with the Physiology of Anaesthesia I succeeded in enlisting the co-operation of Dr. A. J. Clark, Professor of Pharmacology at University College, London. The masterly synopsis of this difficult subject which he has produced makes me profoundly thankful that I did not attempt the task myself, for I am sure that I could not have carried it out with anything approaching the same success.
