Book excerpt: This essay deals with the missionary work of the Society of Jesus in today’s Micronesia from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. Although the Jesuit missionaries wanted to reach Japan and other Pacific islands, such as the Palau and Caroline archipelagos, the crown encouraged them to stay in the Marianas until 1769 (when the Society of Jesus was expelled from the Philippines) to evangelize the native Chamorros as well as to reinforce the Spanish presence on the fringes of the Pacific empire. In 1859, a group of Jesuit missionaries returned to the Philippines, but they never officially set foot on the Marianas during the nineteenth century. It was not until the twentieth century that they went back to Micronesia, taking charge of the mission on the Northern Marianas along with the Caroline and Marshall Islands, thus returning to one of the cradles of Jesuit martyrdom in Oceania.

Book excerpt: The Yes of the Girls is a comedy about Doña Paquita, a 16-year-old girl forced by her mother Doña Irene to marry Don Diego, a sensitive and wealthy 59-year-old gentleman. However, he ignores that Doña Paquita is in love with a certain 'Don Felix', who is actually called Don Carlos, and is Don Diego's nephew. With this love triangle as an argument, the play is developed, whose main theme is the oppression of girls forced to obey their mother and enter into an unequal marriage and in this case with a great age difference between the spouses.

Book excerpt: "From Lack to Excess analyzes the narrative and rhetorical structures of Latin American colonial texts by establishing a dialogue with studies on minority discourse, minor literatures, and postcolonial theory. After reviewing the main contributions and limitations of Transatlantic, Early Modern, and Postcolonial studies for the interpretation of Latin American colonial textualities, Martinez-San Miguel takes as a point of departure the subtle yet pervasive semantic link between the terms "minority" and "colonialism" prevalent in current studies on ethnic and sexual identities. She then engages the disciplinary debate between Colonial Latin American studies and Early Modern, Transatlantic, and Postcolonial studies, paying attention to the epistemic and institutional junctures that explain the current reconfiguration of these fields." "As an alternative to an exhausted debate, Martinez-San Miguel uses Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's notion of a "minor literature," along with current studies on minority discourse to propose new close readings of texts by Hernan Cortes, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Carlos de Siguenza y Gongora, and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. From Lack to Excess traces a discursive voyage that configures a linguistic matrix from the initial lack of language to the excessive Baroque representation of American reality."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the key debates concerning the representation of masculinities in a wide range of popular television genres. The volume looks at the depiction of public masculinity in the soap opera, homosexuality in the situation comedy, the portrayal of fatherhood in prime-time animation, emerging manhood in the supernatural teen text, alternative gender roles in science fiction, male authority in the police series, masculine anxieties in the hospital drama, violence and aggression in sports coverage, ordinariness and emotional connectedness in the reality game show, and domesticity in lifestyle television. Masculinity and Popular Television examines the ways in which masculinities are being constructed, circulated and interrogated in contemporary British and American programming, and considers the ways in which such images can be understood in relation to the 'common sense' model of the hegemonic male that is said to dominate the cultural landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spain, China and Japan in Manila, 1571-1644 offers a new perspective on the connected histories of Spain, China, and Japan as they emerged and developed following Manila's foundation as the capital of the Spanish Philippines in 1571. Examining a wealth of multilingual primary sources, Birgit Tremml-Werner shows that cross-cultural encounters not only shaped Manila's development as a "Eurasian" port city, but also had profound political, economic, and social ramifications for the three pre-modern states. Combining a systematic comparison with a focus on specific actors during this period, this book addresses many long-held misconceptions and offers a more balanced and multi-faceted view of these nations' histories.

Book excerpt: "The Duel on the Beach" is a seafaring adventure novel by the famed Anglo-Italian author Rafael Sabatini. Like the author's earlier book 'Captain Blood', it focuses on piracy in the seventeenth century Caribbean. When Major Sands left Barbados after the death of the governor, Sir John Harradine, he had every reason to congratulate himself that the fortune which he had gone overseas to seek was at last within his reach. For homing with him on the fine ship Centaur was the late governor's daughter, sole heiress to the considerable wealth which Sir John had amassed during his term of office. The long voyage before them with its constant association must afford him opportunities of contriving that the lady and her fortune should be contracted to him by the time they reached Plymouth. But when a French naval officer Monsieur de Bernis takes an interest in the young lady, a collision between the two men is inevitable...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the age of "complex Tv", of social networking and massive consumption of transmedia narratives, a myriad short-lived phenomena surround films and TV programs raising questions about the endurance of a fictional world and other mediatized discourse over a long arc of time. The life of media products can change direction depending on the variability of paratextual materials and activities such as online commentaries and forums, promos and trailers, disposable merchandise and gadgets, grassroots video production, archives, and gaming. This book examines the tension between permanence and obsolescence in the production and experience of media byproducts analysing the affections and meanings they convey and uncovering the machineries of their persistence or disposal. Paratexts, which have long been considered only ancillary to a central text, interfere instead with textual politics by influencing the viewers’ fidelity (or infidelity) to a product and affecting a fictional world’s "life expectancy". Scholars in the fields of film studies, media studies, memory and cultural studies are here called to observe these byproducts' temporalities (their short form and/or long temporal extention, their nostalgic politics or future projections) and assess their increasing influence on our use of the past and present, on our temporal experience, and, consequently, on our social and political self-positioning through the media.
