Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Merciful Unto Me, a Sinner Man has always been granted the privilege of telling his own story no matter how shocking it may be to the refined senses. He has boldly set out with the implied assertion that if you did not want to be startled you could exercise your own right of turning from him and leaving him un read. In all of the actual experiences of life there rests a moral. To those who hold a contrary opinion I say most frankly, go no further into this record. Young women who have tried to imagine how it would seem to live in a state of lost modesty have given their views of things of which they were happily ignorant, and we have praised them for their boldness and have invited them to tea. Their guesses were entertaining. This book is not composed of shrewd surmises. It is literal rather than literary; and it may be the guilty instead of the guiltless that shall cast the first stone at me. Let the indulgent reader pursue this record to the end. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Original Sinners There has been some discussion lately about "The Fall of Man," and English ecclesiastics, appealing to higher authorities than the mere sciences of geology, morphology, biology, zoology, and the history of mankind, have confidently maintained the truth and value of that theological hypothesis. It is very natural. I suppose that every mythology, whether Hebrew, Greek, Roman, German, Celtic, or Norse, has imagined a distant age of innocence and happiness to which those races looked back with a regretful yearning, such as many middle-aged people feel in looking back upon a childhood fondly pictured as innocent and happy. Every one knows how rapidly the past becomes idealised - how rapidly the black shadows of bodily pain, grief, fear, and anxiety fade from the picture that we recall. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sinner and the Problem Below me in the valley stretched woodland country; oak and ash and elm as I could tell by the colouring, for the ash had hardly budded and the oaks were new-leaved, crimson and russet. A lake, too, lay there, fed (i fancied) by a stream or two from the hills, and another streak of water ran a gold riband out to the river and the ships this also, it seemed to me, joined the lake, but so thick were the trees that one might pardon a mistake. I could see a tiny hamlet nestling under a spire, and near the lake, that mirrored bronze leaves and yellow sky, a red-brick house, square-built and solid. Book Synopsis The Sinner's Guide, Vol. 1 of 2 by : De Granada Luis
Download or read book The Sinner's Guide, Vol. 1 of 2 written by De Granada Luis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sinner's Guide, Vol. 1 of 2: In Two Books Say to just man, that it is well; Isa. iii. 10. This is a message from God, delivered by the prophet Isaias, to all the just; it is the shortest in words, and the most copious in bounty, that could have been sent. Men are usually free in promising, but slow in performing; God, on the contrary, is so liberal and magnificent in performing, that all the expressions of his promises are infinitely short of his actions. For what could be expressed shorter than the aforesaid sentence, Say to the just man, that it is well? Yet how comprehensive is this word well! which I conceive was, therefore, not enlarged upon or distinguished, that men might be sensible no words were sufficient fully to express it, nor any distinction requisite to declare what sort of blessings were comprehended under this word well, which includes all that can be imagined. So that, as when Moses asked of God what name he had, the answer was, He that is, without adding any other word, to show that his being was not limited and bounded, but that it comprehended every being and perfection which belongs to the said Being, without mixture of imperfection; so here he delivered this short word well, without explaining it, to signify that all the blessings the heart of man is capable of desiring, are contained under this promise God makes to the just man in reward of his virtue, expressed by the single monosyllable well. 2. This is the main subject I design, by the help of God, to treat of in this book, adding such rules and instructions as are proper to make a man virtuous. Accordingly, it shall be divided into two principal parts. The first will show how much it is our duty to follow virtue, and the inestimable benefits and advantages we reap by so doing; the second shall treat of a virtuous life, and prescribe a method and directions for attaining it. For there are two things requisite towards making a man virtuous; the one is, that he really desire to be such; the other, that he know how to compass it. The first book shall answer the end of the former of these two points; the second, the latter; since, as Plutarch very well observes, "those who excite us to virtue, and teach us not the way to it, are like those that light a lamp, but put in no oil to feed the flame." For more than three hundred years it has been the means of enlightening many souls and leading them in the path of true justice. It has been trans lated into almost every European language, besides the Chinese and Persian. When nam ing the work the author doubtless bore in mind the declaration of St. John, that we have all sinned for the book is suitable for all, whether sinners or just. The method he follows is comprehensive, embracing the entire scope of the spiritual life, at least as far as it is attained by ordinary Christians. A special merit of the Sinner's Guide is the copious use the author makes of Sacred Scripture and the Fathers. He constantly supports his teaching by these invincible authorities.
