This book was released on 1997-06-23 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about the care of research animals. Yet little guidance has appeared on protecting the health and safety of the people who care for or use these animals. This book, an implementation handbook and companion to Guide For the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, identifies principles for building a program and discusses the accountability of institutional leaders, managers, and employees for a program's success. It provides a detailed description of risks-- physical and chemical hazards, allergens and zoonoses, and hazards from experiments--which will serve as a continuing reference for the laboratory. The book offers specific recommendations for controlling risk through administrative procedures, facility design, engineering controls, and periodic evaluations. The volume focuses on the worker, with detailed discussions of work practices, the use of personal protective gear, and the development of an emergency response plan. This handbook will be invaluable to administrators, researchers, and employees in any animal research facility. It will also be of interest to personnel in zoos, animal shelters, and veterinary facilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "By the year 2050, one in every six people in the world is expected to be an older adult (65 years or older) (United Nations, 2019). Alongside the opportunities afforded by increased longevity and decline in mortality is the challenge of rising multimorbidity across the globe. More than 66% of older adults live with more than one chronic condition (Ofori-Asenso et al., 2019), which increases the likelihood of developing functional limitations and disability that often significantly detract from quality of life. This has drawn necessary attention to how society can successfully adapt to population aging and capitalize on opportunities to build a vibrant older population. Discussions about lifespan have steadily transitioned to "ears of life during which one enjoys health and wellbeing, free from chronic disease and disability. From an occupational lens, productive aging "...celebrate[s] older adults' capabilities, potential, and social and economic contributions" (Misey Boyer, 2007, p.8). Occupational therapy (OT) brings distinct value to productive aging by facilitating participation in meaningful occupations, promoting health and wellbeing, and offering cost-effective, client-centered solutions that result in positive health outcomes (AOTA, 2016)"--

Book excerpt: Modeling and Analysis of Compositional Data presents a practical and comprehensive introduction to the analysis of compositional data along with numerous examples to illustrate both theory and application of each method. Based upon short courses delivered by the authors, it provides a complete and current compendium of fundamental to advanced methodologies along with exercises at the end of each chapter to improve understanding, as well as data and a solutions manual which is available on an accompanying website. Complementing Pawlowsky-Glahn’s earlier collective text that provides an overview of the state-of-the-art in this field, Modeling and Analysis of Compositional Data fills a gap in the literature for a much-needed manual for teaching, self learning or consulting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As occupational therapy celebrates its centennial in 2017, attention returns to the profession's founding belief in the value of therapeutic occupations as a way to remediate illness and maintain health. The founders emphasized the importance of establishing a therapeutic relationship with each client and designing an intervention plan based on the knowledge about a client's context and environment, values, goals, and needs. Using today's lexicon, the profession's founders proposed a vision for the profession that was occupation based, client centered, and evidence based--the vision articulated in the third edition of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process. The Framework is a must-have official document from the American Occupational Therapy Association. Intended for occupational therapy practitioners and students, other health care professionals, educators, researchers, payers, and consumers, the Framework summarizes the interrelated constructs that describe occupational therapy practice. In addition to the creation of a new preface to set the tone for the work, this new edition includes the following highlights: a redefinition of the overarching statement describing occupational therapy's domain; a new definition of clients that includes persons, groups, and populations; further delineation of the profession's relationship to organizations; inclusion of activity demands as part of the process; and even more up-to-date analysis and guidance for today's occupational therapy practitioners. Achieving health, well-being, and participation in life through engagement in occupation is the overarching statement that describes the domain and process of occupational therapy in the fullest sense. The Framework can provide the structure and guidance that practitioners can use to meet this important goal.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plans for this study were formulated between I956 and I958. For some time then, I had been interested in the processes of personal and social accommodation and in the factors that were responsible for resistance to change. While a graduate student at Columbia University at that time, I was also affiliated with a multidisciplinary research group at Cornell University Medical Colleges studying the reactions of people of various cultural and social backgrounds to situations of stress. The Hungarian refugees were one of the groups being studied. I thus decided to undertake a study of the process of acculturation, the Hungarian refugees providing an ideal population. I did not expect to encounter any serious difficulties. Needless to say, the work was beset with every sort of diWculty, financial, conceptual, etc., that usually accompanies research projects. It is only now, more than a decade later, that I am able to present my findings in their final form. I am pleased to have this opportunity to express my in debtedness to the many people who made this study possible. I have been fortunate in having teachers, colleagues, and friends, often all in the same person, who helped me in the formulation of the problem, offered encouragement along every step, and taught me the very skills I was to use.

Book excerpt: Qualitative Research for Occupational and Physical Therapists is a practical guide for students and professionals in rehabilitation intended to encourage their active engagement with this major approach to research design and implementation. Carpenter and Suto address the specific needs of the therapy professions by examining the unique challenges of conducting qualitative research in community and institutional rehabilitation settings. Whilst grounded in contemporary literature, the book puts theory into action with examples of research and a demonstration of how such studies have directly influenced rehabilitation practice. The book covers the entire research process from the initial preparation through to implementing, interpreting, disseminating, and ensuring the quality of qualitative research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This casebook is designed for use in courses on epidemiology or occupational epidemiology. The chapters are based on actual studies and are written by the principal investigators in the field. The book is divided into four parts: cohort studies, case-control and proportionate mortality studies, cross-sectional studies, and surveillance and screening studies. A brief introduction to each part describes the study design, and a statistical appendix is included so that students can readily find the tools needed to answer analytical questions in the text. Questions in each chapter deal with study design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation, and complete answers are provided at the end of the chapters. Data sets accompany many of the chapters, and most of the analytical questions can be answered with a pocket calculator. The studies presented in this lucid, well-organized text involve a broad range of disease outcomes, including spontaneous abortion, carpal tunnel syndrome, kidney dysfunction, cytogenetic changes, ischemic heart disease, dermatitis, chronic renal disease, and several types of cancer. The exposures of interest are equally diverse, including VDT use, repetitive hand-wrist motion, heavy metals, carbon monoxide, diesel exhaust, lead, vinyl chloride, pesticides, solvents, silica, and acid mists. These outcomes and exposures cover many of the current issues in occupational health.
