Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper describes an object oriented model for simulation of a radar system and its environment. The input to the system is a set of radar, target and environmental specifications, and the output is a synthesized IF (Intermediate Frequency) signal similar to the one output after the IF amplifier stage of a radar. The model simulates the radar system using separate Radar, Environmental, and Target modules. In the Radar module the transmitter and the receiver modules are isolated. The transmitter module provides signal objects to the environment. The Target and Environmental modules generate instances of the model objects specified by the user and provide them to the environment. These object instances interact with the signal objects, and at the end of a sampling period backscattered signal objects are sampled by the receiver module. The system is designed for the maximum flexibility and for incremental improvement. Thus various radar systems and environmental settings can be simulated by changing the parameters of the associated modules. Many existing models for targets and specific environmental conditions can be incorporated into our model."

Book excerpt: The Asia Simulation Conference 2006 (JSST 2006) was aimed at exploring challenges in methodologies for modeling, control and computation in simu lation, and their applications in social, economic, and financial fields as well as established scientific and engineering solutions. The conference was held in Tokyo from October 30 to November 1, 2006, and included keynote speeches presented by technology and industry leaders, technical sessions, organized sessions, poster sessions, and vendor exhibits. It was the seventh annual inter national conference on system simulation and scientific computing, which is organized by the Japan Society for Simulation Technology (JSST), the Chi nese Association for System Simulation (CASS), and the Korea Society for Simulation (KSS). For the conference, all submitted papers were refereed by the international technical program committee, each paper receiving at least two independent reviews. After careful reviews by the committee, 65 papers from 143 submis sions were selected for oral presentation. This volume includes the keynote speakers' papers along with the papers presented at the oral sessions and the organized sessions. As a result, we are publishing 87 papers for the conference in this volume. In addition to the scientific tracts presented, the conference featured keynote presentations by five invited speakers. We are grateful to them for accepting our invitation and for their presentations. We also would like to express our gratitude to all contributors, reviewers, technical program conmiittee members, and organizing committee members who made the conference very successful.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Space-Based Radar Simulator Laboratory is a secure computing facility that provides a software environment to support simulation of both space-based radar (SBR) operations and detailed SBR performance. The SBR Integrated Surveillance and Interception Response System Model Library is a set of models that can be run on the generic simulation software in the discrete-event simulation state. These models allow for simulation of SBR operations within the context of the North American air defence infrastructure. This volume describes the design of the Model Library in detail, including models for SBR radar, satellite platform, antenna, and clutter environment. The models are designed within an object oriented framework. The design description in this volume defines each model in terms of the standard object oriented design attributes of parameters and methods. Each computing software component used to implement the models is also described.

Book excerpt: This introduction and textbook familiarizes engineers with the use of mathematical and computational modeling and simulation in a way that develops their understanding of the solution characteristics of a broad class of real-world problems. The relevant basic and advanced methodologies are explained in detail, with special emphasis on ill-defined problems. Some fifteen simulation systems are presented on the language and the logical level. Moreover, the reader also can accumulate an experiential overview by studying the wide variety of case studies spanning much of science and engineering. The latter are briefly described within the book but their full versions as well as some simulation software demos are available on the Web. The book can be used for courses on various levels as well as for self-study. Advanced sections are identified and can be skipped in a first reading or in undergraduate courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource covers basic concepts and modeling examples for the three “pillars” of EW: Electronic Attack (EA) systems, Electronic Protection (EP) techniques, and Electronic Support (ES). It develops techniques for the modeling and simulation (M&S) of modern radar and electronic warfare (EW) systems and reviews radar principles, including the radar equation. M&S techniques are introduced, and example models developed in MATLAB and Simulink are presented and discussed in detail. These individual models are combined to create a full end-to-end engineering engagement simulation between a pulse-Doppler radar and a target. The radar-target engagement model is extended to include jamming models and is used to illustrate the interaction between radar and jamming signals and the impact on radar detection and tracking. In addition, several classic EA techniques are introduced and modeled, and the effects on radar performance are explored. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, and managers who are involved in the design, development, or testing of radar and EW systems. It provides a comprehensive overview of the M&S techniques that are used in these systems, and the book's many examples and case studies provide a solid foundation for understanding how these techniques can be applied in practice.

Book excerpt: I have long had an interest in the life sciences, but have had few opportunities to indulge that interest in my professional activities. It has only been through simulation that those opportunities have arisen. Some of my most enjoyable classes were those I taught to students in the life sciences, where I attempted to show them the value of simulation to their discipline. That there is such a value cannot be questioned. Whether you are interested in population ecology, phar macokinetics, the cardiovascular system, or cell interaction, simulation can play a vital role in explaining the underlying processes and in enhancing our understanding of these processes. This book comprises an excellent collection of contributions, and clearly demonstrates the value of simulation in the particular areas of physiology and bioengineering. My main frustration when teaching these classes to people with little or no computer background was the lack of suitable simulation software. This di rectly inspired my own attempts at producing software usable by the computer novice. It is especially nice that software is available that enables readers to experience the examples in this book for themselves. I would like to congratulate and thank the editors, Rogier P. van Wijk van Brievingh and Dietmar P. P. Moller, for all of their excellent efforts. They should be proud of their achievement. This is the sixth volume in the Advances in Simulation series, and other volumes are in preparation.
