Book excerpt: As global energy demand has dramatically increased and traditional fossil fuels will be depleted in the foreseeable future, clean and unlimited renewable energies are recognized as the future global energy challenge solution. Today, the power grid in U.S. is building more and more renewable energies like wind and solar, while the electric power system faces new challenges from rapid growing percentage of wind and solar. Unlike combustion generators, intermittency and uncertainty are the inherent features of wind and solar. These features bring a big challenge to the stability of modern electric power grid, especially for a small scale power grid with wind and solar. In order to deal with the intermittency and uncertainty of wind and solar, energy storage systems are considered as one solution to mitigate the fluctuation of wind and solar by smoothing their power outputs. For many different types of energy storage systems, this thesis studied the operation of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in power systems and analyzed the benefits of the BESS. Unlike many researchers assuming fixed utilization patterns for BESS and calculating the benefits, this thesis found the BESS utilization patterns and benefits through an investment planning model. Furthermore, a cost is given for utilizing BESS and to find the best way of operating BESS rather than set an upper bound and a lower bound for BESS energy levels. Two planning models are proposed in this thesis and preliminary conclusions are derived from simulation results. This work is organized as below: chapter 1 briefly introduces the background of this research; chapter 2 gives an overview of previous related work in this area; the main work of this thesis is put in chapter 3 and chapter 4 contains the generic BESS model and the investment planning model; the following chapter 5 includes the simulation and results analysis of this research and chapter 6 provides the conclusions from chapter 5.

Book excerpt: Batteries have been storing electricity for mankind since 1800, while it is till recently that grid-scale battery energy storage become commercially viable and are seeking merchant opportunities in electricity markets. Battery energy storage have faster ramp speed compared to other types of generation units, and are extremely valuable for facilitating the integration of renewable energy resources. Battery energy storage can provide arbitrage and ancillary services in the electricity market. However, even though nowadays battery energy storage systems are constructed and operated with mature technologies, it remains an open question on how to operates them economically in electricity market to maximize the investment profit. This dissertation covers the optimal planning, scheduling, and operation for battery energy storage in electricity markets. It shows that the degradation mechanism of electrochemical battery cells must be considered in market bidding and operation strategies to maximize the participant's operating profit, and proposes optimal methods to incorporate the cost of battery degradation into different participation stages and markets. For frequency regulation markets, this dissertation proposes a real-time control policy that optimally trades-off the performance penalty and the degradation cost in frequency regulation operations. A optimal bidding policy is designed based on the proposed control policy to maximize participant's market profit while maintaining satisfactory operation performance. For energy markets, this dissertation designs a piece-wise linear model that accurately incorporates battery degradation cost into dispatch optimization and bidding strategies. Finally, this dissertation proposes a bi-level planning model to optimize the location and rating of battery energy storage systems considering both energy and reserve markets. This model ensures the profitability of investments in energy storage by enforcing a rate of return constraint. This model is tested on a 240-bus model of the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) system, and the result analyzes the effects of different storage technologies, rate of return requirements, and regulation market policies on ES participation on the optimal storage investment decisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving the goal of green and environmentally friendly energy systems is not possible without the concept of energy storage. Such storage should charge when renewable generation, e.g., photovoltaics and wind farms, is abundant and discharge during periods of its scarcity. Although pumped hydropower plants have been widely used as extremely large capacity energy storage, the recent technological developments in lithium-based batteries have made them economically feasible. The major advantages of batteries over a conventional energy storage system, i.e., hydropower, include its modularity and ease of integration with the transport system. This Special Issue is thus focused on both stationary batteries and mobile batteries in electric vehicles. Both should be used to provide flexibility and balancing services to power systems. While stationary batteries are focused solely on the power system, the batteries within electric vehicles need to primarily fulfill the task of providing energy for transportation. This is why their use in power systems is secondary. However, due to generally long parking periods, they can become a detrimental asset in terms of balancing the power system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase in renewable power generation has greatly changed the current energy market dynamics. The cheaper, cleaner but intermittent characteristics of renewable power generation such as wind has accelerated the retirement of large coal plants and investments in flexible resources such as fast response generators, energy storage and transmission facilities. However, this transition requires tremendous effort on how to improve the market design to better handle the uncertainty on renewable generation, and to facilitate the deployment of more flexible resources such as energy storage. In this dissertation, we focus on the planning and operation of energy storage systems. To begin with, we discuss in detail different optimization methods that have been proposed to handle this growing uncertainty. Yearly simulations were performed to compare the solution accuracy and the computing efficiency. Then two stochastic multi-stage co-planning models are proposed to coordinate investments in battery energy storage and transmission expansion, and in battery energy storage and fast generation. These co-planning models have a 25-year horizon and consider not only the uncertainty on both wind capacity and load increase, but also the degradation of the batteries. A sensitivity analysis is performed to study the competition and cooperation relationship between these resources, their investment patterns under different geography, and the correlation between the profiles of wind generation and load. At the end of this dissertation, a stochastic energy and ancillary service co-optimization model is proposed to evaluate the contribution of storage to both energy arbitrage and ancillary services. The actual requirements for regulation reserve and spinning reserve are quantified by combining intra-hour system operation with day-ahead stochastic optimization.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A need exists for systematic evaluation methods of battery storage sizing as an electric utility asset investment. Atlantic Electric, like many US utilities, has begun to consider battery energy storage systems for multiple applications, and will likely continue to evaluate potential investments in energy storage in the future. This thesis develops and evaluates three sizing methodologies for battery energy storage systems for a reliability application at an electric distribution substation. The methods are applied to three substation locations using real historical load data to understand the required supplemental capacity provided by on-site battery storage energy systems in situations of peak demand coinciding with N-1 contingency. The study also includes analysis of business processes for asset planning and recommendations. The results of the analysis indicate that deterministic conservative sizing methods, when compared to a probabilistic historical risk-based method, yield battery size that is significantly larger. The most conservative battery size, which would cover the most extreme capacity needs, is approximately twice the size of the risk-based battery size, which would cover approximately 80% of capacity need events. Going forward, the methodologies from this thesis can be developed further for evaluating battery storage systems for reliability applications among diverse conditions and use cases. Furthermore, integrating multiple use cases and potential value streams for battery storage systems in utility operations will involve cross-functional and comprehensive processes for evaluation in the future.
