Book excerpt: Past research has not evaluated the effectiveness of a remote behavior skills training (BST) package with pre-service special education teachers' implementation of a multiple stimulus without replacement (MSWO) preference assessment (PA). Thus, this research was needed to evaluate the effectiveness of a remote BST package on pre-service special education teacher's implementation of a MSWO PA. This study was conducted to first, evaluate the effects of pre-service special education teachers' fidelity of conducting a MSWO PA using remote BST and next, to evaluate the intervention gains maintained over time, and last to determine if pre-service special education teachers believe the MSWO PA results in favorable social validity measures. The components of behavioral skills training used were remote instruction, remote video modeling, a remote quiz, and feedback. Results suggest that a remote BST package is a useful training strategy when teaching pre-service special education teachers PA. During 1-week follow-up across participants, each participant maintained their skills of implementation. Book excerpt: "Current research suggests that non-behavior analysts are not able to accurately implement stimulus preference assessments (SPA) given written instructions, alone. However, training that includes written instructions supplemented with feedback from a professional with expertise in conducting SPAs has proven effective. Unfortunately, expert-facilitated, direct training may not be available to some clinicians and teachers. Thus, the first objective of the current sequence of investigations was to assess awareness and use of SPAs among practicing behavior analysts and special educators. The second objective was to evaluate the effects of a self-instruction package on accurate implementation of SPAs. In Study 1, a survey was conducted with behavioral and non-behavioral professionals from various agencies serving individuals with disabilities. Results suggested that nearly 90% of certified behavior analysts used at least one published SPA procedure, but individuals in other professions (e.g., special education) were less likely to use these procedures. In Study 2, an antecedent-only instructional package was evaluated with two methods of SPA. The results demonstrated that access to enhanced written instructions (i.e., technical jargon was minimized; instructions included pictures, diagrams, and step-by-step examples) allowed inexperienced staff to accurately implement SPA procedures. Results are discussed in terms of applying low cost, highly portable self-instruction methods to teach non-behavior analysts other aspects of implementing behavior-analytic technologies." -- Abstract, p.2.
