In the context of EFL teaching and learning, it is frequently perceived as an impediment to the student's learning, particularly in communicative classrooms. Although several studies on the impact of CS have been conducted, little attention is paid to the approach and opinions of instructors on the use of CS in EFL classrooms, particularly beginner teachers who frequently struggle in their first years due to a lack of experience. This study recruited 5 beginner teachers who are working in an English language center that employs strict English-only regulations. To learn about the use of CS in the classroom, qualitative research methods were used, including audio-recording for each class observation session, class notes, and teacher speech transcription. To obtain information on the instructor's reflections and opinions, stimulated recall interviews and semistructured interviews were conducted. The findings reveal that CS existed even with a rigorous English-only policy. Furthermore, the participants believe that, while target language immersion is essential, using the first language (L1) may benefit both the teacher and the students. Each teacher in this study demonstrated the use of several approaches to enhance the effective use of L1 in their classroom. The study provides an opportunity for self-reflection not just for the participants but also for language teachers interested in CS. The study's findings are used to make recommendations for the use of CS in the EFL classroom. Some of the data may also aid in the development of a language usage policy for language instructors and policymakers in English language teaching institutions.

Book excerpt: This study aimed to investigate the under-explored subject of code-switching (CS) used by EFL teachers in adolescent classrooms in the context of Vietnamese language centers. The gap that the present study attempts to fill is finding out teachers' attitudes towards CS, its frequency and the situations in which they use it as well as pedagogical and affective factors influencing their decisions regarding CS. The research involved both qualitative and quantitative methods in which the data was collected from different sources: questionnaires, classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with the observed teachers. Thirty teachers participated in the study. Five of them were first observed and interviewed before the distribution of the questionnaires. The results show that most teachers had positive attitudes towards the practice of code-switching. However, a minority of them though the prohibition of L1 would bring more benefits to students in the learning process. The frequency of teachers' code-switching varied in different situations but it was mostly used for explaining grammar explicitly, maintaining classroom discipline, and strengthening relationships with students. The most common percentage of L1 used in the classroom was from 10% to 30% but it was used more frequently if students were slow learners. The teachers believed pedagogical and affective factors such as students' level and teachers' effort to share identity and build stronger bonds with students influenced significantly their decision to codeswitch. Regarding code-switching use, pedagogical concerns appeared to affect them more than affective ones. These findings provide insights into Vietnamese EFL teachers' code-switching in teaching adolescents in a language center and reveal totally new perspectives compared with previous studies. Although code-switching is considered a great tool to make the lesson accessible to students, teachers should use it moderately and in a strategic way to avoid doing it habitually and automatically.

Some researchers support the L1 use in classrooms for its benefits to the EFL learners; however, other researchers are concerned that learners' exposure to L2 would be reduced by teachers' over-reliance on L1. Because of its huge influence on the EFL learners, there has been a considerable number of studies on this issue in a variety of learning settings; nevertheless, investigations into the L1 use in online classes are limited despite the rise of online learning in the COVID-19 pandemic era. Thus, this study attempted to examine Vietnamese EFL teachers' purposes and perceptions of using L1 in online classes in the context of English centers in Vietnam. The research tools of this study involve classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with 7 EFL Vietnamese teachers who were teaching online classes at an English center. The findings indicated that teachers had a great preference for using L1 for managerial functions of L1. It was also found that overall, teachers had positive attitudes towards the use of L1 in online classes. Although participants acknowledged that the proper use of L1 would be beneficial to students' L2 acquisition, the improper use of L1, such as the over-reliance on L1, would create bad habits for students. Accordingly, teachers suggested that the frequency and purposes of L1 should be adjusted to target learners' competencies. Moreover, the findings suggested that teachers' actual use of L1 in terms of purposes and frequency in online classes are not compatible with their self-evaluation of L1 use. The findings also indicated that teachers did not have particular pedagogical principles of using L1. Thus, detailed and clear guidelines of L1 use should be developed and applied in classrooms.

Book excerpt: The present study observed the use of educational code-switching to the L1 (Arabic) among six Arabic EFL teachers at Majmaah University, in Saudi Arabia. It used an a priori set of purposes based on Creswell (2003) and derived categories to examine the linguistic, social, and class management purposes behind code-switching. The instrument consisted of two parts: a demographic questionnaire and an audio recorder used in conjunction with a classroom observation sheet. Although some studies have suggested that educational code-switching to the L1 in EFL classrooms is an unconscious act (e.g., Moghadam, Abdul Samad, & Shahraki, 2012), the present study's results concluded the reverse: that the use of educational code-switching could be interpreted as an intentional practice among teachers in EFL classrooms. The results provided a more in-depth understanding of the use of educational code-switching to the L1 (Arabic). They agreed with previous studies that have found such code-switching to be very common among EFL teachers. Although participants displayed different linguistic, social, and class management purposes, analysis of the data revealed that certain purposes were more common than others, with linguistic purposes being far more common than social, class management, or other purposes. The most common linguistic purpose was to explain new words, and for class management was to clarify activities/exercises. Only two purposes, to engage in small talk with students and to connect between sentences, could not be categorized into one of the three main types.
