The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between teachers' perceived competence, satisfaction with related support services, satisfaction with the amount of training received, level of education and years of teaching experience and the attitude of teachers toward inclusion. A total of thirty elementary school teachers completed the Elementary School Teacher Survey, an adaptation of the Regular Education Initiative (REI) (Gemmell-Crosby & Hanzlik, 1994). A significant association was found between teachers' level of perceived competence, satisfaction with support services and their attitude toward inclusion. No significant association was found between teachers' level of education, specialized training and years of teaching experience with their attitude toward inclusion. Further research needs to be conducted to determine additional factors associated with teachers' attitudes. Implications for occupational therapists are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the attitudes of general educators toward movement of students with special needs into general education classrooms. This study was conducted using a descriptive quantitative approach with a survey design. The total number of participants was 73 with a total return rate of 53%. Teachers were surveyed on their (a) attitudes towards students with disabilities in inclusive settings, (b) beliefs about professional roles and responsibilities, and (c) beliefs about the efficacy of inclusion. Time spent with special education teachers tended to increase teacher beliefs that students with mild to moderate disabilities can be more effectively educated in regular classrooms as opposed to special education classrooms. The vast majority of teachers responded positively to their roles and responsibilities with students with disabilities. General education teachers showed a positive belief in the efficacy of inclusion, as 80% indicated that they believed inclusion was effective due to the social skills that can be learned. Almost 20% of participants did not believe that students with mild or moderate disabilities should be educated in the general education classroom to the fullest extent possible. It is recommended that administrators address the attitudes of general education teachers. This could be done through in-service training, mentoring and allotting time to collaborate with special education teachers. More research should be done to determine reasons why teacher attitudes are negative, so that schools may work to maintain positive attitudes and successful inclusion programs.

Some differences, however, were found between the attitudes of special and regular education teachers. Special educators were more supportive to full inclusion than the general educators. The integration of information concerning teachers' beliefs/points of view about inclusion may help practitioners to design educational settings that enhance all students' academic performance. Despite Jamaica's Ministry of Education having established an inclusive education policy in 2008, the majority of children with special needs are kept at home. With very little inclusion in schools and segregation of students with special needs (SWSN), teachers in Jamaica have not experienced inclusion and do not feel adequately equipped to facilitate it. Literature shows that teachers with experience only in traditional classrooms, and no exposure to diverse students are likely to be resistant to, or unable to, implement inclusion. Teachers also tend to implement inclusive teaching methods and adopt better attitudes after hands-on experience, modelling with a co-teacher. Five teachers participated in a 2-week training condition, each teacher was provided with an inclusive classroom and an experienced inclusive teacher (mentor). The first week the teacher is assisting the mentor, the second week the mentor assists the teacher with lesson planning and teaching. Teachers were given 2 self-rating questionnaires before and after training to measure whether their attitudes and self-efficacy improved and whether a direct measure of attitude and self-efficacy towards inclusion could be predicted after training. Another questionnaire was given 2 weeks after training that measured the potential success of training through implementation. Using paired sample t-tests for both attitude and self-efficacy scores it was found that all 5 teachers could be predicted to show an increase in both attitude and self-efficacy scores after training. It was also found using independent sample means tests that teachers without any previous experience teaching SWSN gained a larger difference in attitudes compared to teachers who already had experience however there was no difference in gains in self-efficacy.

As such, teacher educators assist in meeting this challenge by continuous improvement to teacher education programs preparing teachers to meet the educational needs of all students. The purpose of this study was to examine perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs of beginning elementary education teachers concerning teaching students with disabilities in general education classrooms. A mixed method study was conducted using a three part survey that solicited participant information related to personal demographics, 32 Likert-type scale questions with a certain level of agreement to attitudes, beliefs, preparation, and knowledge of inclusion. In addition, open-ended questions allowed participants to include more in-depth responses to thoughts about their overall experiences, beliefs, and support. The participants were graduates of a southeastern regional university teacher preparation program in elementary education. Demographics of participants indicated that the majority were Caucasian females, worked in general education classes, and were not required to take any special education coursework in their teacher education program. The findings suggested that although a high percentage of beginning elementary education teachers' believe in teaching and including students with disabilities in general education classrooms, many lack the necessary knowledge and skills needed to successfully engage students with disabilities in their classrooms. Findings of this study continue to emphasize the need for beginning general education teachers to receive not only more in-depth preparation at the preservice level, which supports successful transition from preparation to practice, but also increased opportunities for professional development and in-service training on meeting the needs of students with with disabilities. This study may provide a platform supporting positive attitudes towards professional teacher preparation and experiences in teaching students with disabilities in general education classrooms. By helping bridge the gap between preparation and the implementation of effective instructional practices to meet the needs of diverse learners, beginning teachers can be supported by pedagogy and evidence based educational practices learned through teacher education programs."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
