Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Books of the New Testament This book is the outgrowth of a series of sermons preached on the Gospels nine years ago in my first pastoral charge. These sermons were rewritten and published in the Presbyterian Journal of Philadelphia. Favorable notice having been accorded these articles, I was led to continue them by writing introductory articles to the other books of the New Testament for the same paper. The kind encouragement and advice of Professor Warfield, under whose able instruction in Allegheny Seminary I was permitted to study for four years, led me to think of rewriting the whole series with the view of publishing them in book form when completed. As my ministry progressed, I was also impressed with the need of having a popular treatise on New Testament Introduction for uses of instruction among the people of my charge. These things led me on in my work until it is now completed. To the wise council and timely criticisms of Dr. Warfield I am deeply indebted, for through the years that have elapsed since the inception of this work, he has repeatedly encouraged me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament However willingly I might have undertaken the labour of giving an entirely new form to this new edition of the Introduction to the Old Testament, ' my contemporaries have hitherto afforded me small occasion to exchange the results of my former researches against other convictions. I am obliged, therefore, to confine myself merely to remedy the defects of the former editions to the best of my judg ment and power, and bring the present one up to the level of the existing state of Biblical Literature. The proposed alterations, then, affect less the entire work. Than its details, and I h0pe to have omitted nothing essential from new works which may have appeared, either to its increase or improvement. May the public be only as well pleased with the present as with past editions! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But my chief acknowledgments are due to my colleague in our Divinity School, Dr. Gwynn, who has taken, on my behalf, an amount of trouble which, if I were not somewhat ashamed of having imposed so much. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the New Testament, Vol. 1 of 2: Critical, Exegetical, and Theological Is as brief as possible, excluding extraneous matter in order to save space and economise the reader's time. Nothing which appeared necessary to completeness is intentionally omitted. If the author's views be not always approved, inquiry will at least be stimulated. They are not put forward lightly, but after anxious thought. Difficult questions, on which the evidence is conflicting, had to be treated, and slender probabilities required to be weighed. In these circumstances the author exercised his best judgment, reaching conclusions cautiously where acute scholars differ. Believing that his Opinions will be generally admitted sooner or later, he sends them forth to the world, requesting a candid consideration on the part of the reader. The Bible, however, is a difficult book, and mistakes in explaining it can scarcely be avoided; but impartial thinkers will judge these mistakes leniently. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Bible Study: The Old Testament As every one knows, the number of books on the Bible is very great. No other volume, not even Shakespeare, has called forth so large a body of literature. But of all that has been written there are very few books that have been prepared with pedagogical insight to meet the wants of young students. It is in view of this need that the present work - not fruitlessly, the author hopes - has been prepared. The purpose of this book is to set forth the literary, historical, and ethical value of the Bible. It aims to pre sent the principal facts that every intelligent person ought to know. It directs the students' attention chiefly to the Bible itself; and as a literary, historical, and ethical study, the Scriptures will be found, in the case of many readers, to be a book of unsuspected interest and value. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Gospels In issuing the new edition of this Essay, I can only repeat what I said nearly six years ago. The book remains with all its shortcomings such as it was when first written. Once again some mistakes which I had detected myself, and others which friends pointed out to me, have been corrected: a few additions have been made; a few phrases have been modified; but this is all that has been done in revision, nor did I purpose to do more. If the Essay has any value, it lies chiefly, 1 believe, in the encouragement which it offers to students who desire to examine the records of our Faith with patient and devout trust in the Spirit of Truth. They will know, scarcely less well than I do, where the fulfilment of my plan falls short of the design; but they will know also the certainty of the assurance, which each days work makes stronger, that Holy Scripture opens treasures new and old to men and to Churches, now as in former times, when the scribe becomes a disciple of the kingdom of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Characters of the New Testament There is a kind of Bible study that has a tendency to become lost in the mechanics Of the process. Students have been known to become so absorbed in the problems of authorship, dates, and textual criticism as to miss entirely the great moral and spiritual meanings of the Word. A study of the lives of the great men of the Bible is not subject to this danger. The study of the textbook should be accompanied by a parallel reading and study of the Bible. The extent of such study to be expected in a particular case can be best determined by the teacher. In every instance some assignments for reading and study should be made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament These Outlines are the outgrowth of fifteen years of study and teaching. They are designed simply to indicate the lines along which study is demanded if one is to understand the teachings of the Old Testa ment. NO effort has been made to present an exhaust ive review of the ideas which have been advanced by others in regard to these remarkable books, or to give completeness to the views of the author. Only such points as seem necessary to a correct understanding of the text are presented and these are stated in the briefest form, with such references as may guide the way to further study. If the position here taken seem conservative, it is not because the writer has ignored the later criticism or underestimates its value, but because the newer ideas do not seem to be sufficiently established to demand the abandonment of the older. Great gain has already come from the learned and laborious investigations of the new school of criticism and we hope for still richer fruitage in the future, but the results thus far secured are too vague to become a satisfactory basis for the interpretation of Scripture.
