Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Science and Practice of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Inorganic The principal aim of this volume is to guide the student towards the attainment of systematic work in his qualitative analysis - to help him to learn a sound method rather than to fill his mind with innumerable isolated reactions. For teaching the method of work, it is not only unnecessary but undesirable to attempt to include either all classes of compounds, or all the reactions of those that are considered. The selection made is that which long experience has shown to be the best for the purpose, and at the same time it includes all the more commonly occurring inorganic substances. The reactions described are not only those utilised in the tabulated method given, but sufficient for the more advanced student to avail himself of in devising other methods in specific cases that can be advantageously treated in a special or different manner. A perfect system is an elastic one that may be adapted to various circumstances, and the student is encouraged to consider the tables given as guides rather than rigid rules, when he has had a little experience and can judge for himself. There is a great deal more given in the book than it would be desirable for a student to actually confirm for himself while going over the reactions for the first time. Those parts that he should experimentally verify as far as he can before beginning any separations are indicated by asterisks, which signify that he should confirm for himself the statements in the paragraph so marked until he comes to the asterisk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Chemical Analysis, Organic and Inorganic Probably all teachers of chemistry are familiar with two classes of student: (I) book students, i.e. students who have obtained their knowledge of chemistry entirely by reading or by hearing lectures; (2) laboratory students, those who, by use of a merely outline book or chart, and by attention to details of experiment, have obtained the whole of their knowledge in the laboratory. The first class of student, if brought into the laboratory, is unable to carry out a single experiment without bungling. The second, although he may be able to carry out experiments with machine-like precision, from a sheet of instructions, is quite at sea when questioned upon the underlying theoretical principles. One of the great difficulties in teaching chemistry is to get students to apply their theoretical knowledge to aid them in their practical work, and, on the other hand, to bring their practical knowledge to bear in the elucidation of theoretical problems. The theoretical knowledge is generally kept rigidly apart from the facts practically gained, so that the student loses all the mutual help which the two branches of study afford each other. Recognising this difficulty, I have endeavoured to write a book in which theory and practice are more or less dovetailed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Qualitative Analysis by Solution If later the child, now a youth, undertakes the study Of Chemistry, he will familiarize himself with elements and compounds by precisely the same method. Expertness in differentiating and classifying such substances is dependent, primarily, upon the delicacy Of adjustment Of the nervous system, that is, upon talent; and, secondarily, upon practice. In so far, chemical analysis is an art. But the task Of the chemist, which is no less than to acquire a positive acquaintance with the ultimate composition and characteristic qualities Of every accessi ble body in the material universe, is greatly abridged and lightened by the classification Of phenomena, substances, and bodies by certain principles which render the world rational to us, and which we name natural laws. In this aspect, Chemical analysis is a science. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Chemical Analysis: A Guide in the Practical Study of Chemistry and in the Work To aid the student in gaining an accurate acquaintance with the facts whereby analyses are made, and a clear understanding of the co-ordination of these facts - the principles of analysis - has been the chief object in this work. It is the result of experience in the constant endeavor to prevent habits of automatic operation and of superficial observation in analysis. Farther, it is desired that the book may be found convenient and reliable for ref erence by chemists, pharmacists, and others, who occasionally or habitually perform analyses. The organic bases and acids, with a few exceptions, have been omitted from con sideration. This is not done from neglect, but from a conviction of their too great importance for the subordinate and cursory attention which can be given to them in works devoted mainly to inorganic analysis. To the faithful workers who have wrought out the great science of Chemistry, the writers humbly acknowledge their indebtedness for whatever of truth or value this little manual may contain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Detailed Course of Qualitative Chemical Analysis of Inorganic Substances: With Explanatory Notes Some explanation of the origin and purpose of the present work is necessary. It arose out of the difficulty experienced in attempting to give a thorough course of qualitative analysis in limited time to large classes of students. The smaller text-books on the subject are too elementary in character to use in connection with such a course; they devote too little attention to the precautions to be observed to insure delicacy of the reactions, to the difficulties encountered by the student in actual work, and to the modifications of the process required in special cases. On the other hand, the manual of Fresenius, though complete and very valuable as a work of reference, is confusing to beginners on account of the complexity of its arrangement and insufficient explanation of the purposes of the various operations. The attempt has been made in the following pages to present an almost equally thorough scheme of qualitative analysis in a more concise and readily intelligible form. The process of analysis here given was based originally on that of Fresenius, but it has undergone a number of important modifications suggested by experience with it in the laboratory. Among these may be specially mentioned the directions for the preparation of the substance for analysis and those for testing for acids, which have been made as distinct and definite as possible; for it is with these two parts of the process that the greatest difficulty is usually experienced. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Qualitative Chemical Analysis This manual is designed to impart but little chemical truth directly. It aims rather to lead the student to gain that truth himself as nearly as possible at first hand and as a product of his own thinking. This he is enabled to do, without waste of time, guided as he is by the suggestions of the book and the constant prevision of the live teacher. The student is first thoroughly grounded in the fundamental ideas of chemistry before he goes on to use those ideas as tools in the practical work of qualitative analysis. If he gains a proper conception of the relation of the atom to the molecule, of valence; if he masters the principles of nomenclature and the chemical equation as set forth in chapters ii. and iii., he will certainly acquire his chemistry with facility and clearness. That it produces strong, accurate, enthusiastic, and independent students the author has demonstrated in his own classes through several years. For the sake of emphasizing what is expressed elsewhere, the author would insist upon regular recitations, at stated times, upon the laboratory work, in which there shall be full and searching discussion of the results obtained, of errors committed, how these errors have arisen and how controlled. Comparison of results obtained and informal discussion of the difficulties to be met with beget an interest and enthusiasm for the work which is invaluable. Moreover, a few experiments fully reported and discussed are of much greater value than many experiments with little time given to such discussion. Treats of Qualitative Analysis; it is divided into five sections. In the first section the general preliminary operations of testing are described, such as the employment of flame reactions, the use of the Bunsen flame, the spectroscope, and so forth. The second section treats of systematic qualitative testing. The wet and dry reactions of each of the more commonly occurring bases and acids, inorganic and organic, are first described, after which a synopsis of analytical methods is given. The third section gives the special tests for the rarer elements, and shows where they may be expected, and how they may be separated, in the ordinary course of analysis. The fourth and fifth sections have been added mainly for the use of medical students. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Analysis: As a Laboratory Basis for the Study of General Inorganic Chemistry This text presents the course of instruction given by the author to the freshman classes at the University of California where the exigencies of vocational courses render it impracticable for a large number of students to devote more than one year to general inorganic chemistry and to qualitative analysis as well. Therefore, the scheme of qualitative analysis is made to serve as a means of correlating the apparently independent experiments of general chemistry. Thus, while the end in view is primarily the imparting of a knowledge of the general subject, familiarity with analytical methods is obtained. The course presupposes good chemical training in the secondary schools, many of its briefer statements being in the nature of a review rather than of first presentation. No attempt has been made to emasculate the work by eliminating the consideration of more difficult points. On the other hand, the tests for individual elements have been varied in order to familiarize the student with as many significant reactions as possible. In the opinion of the author, instruction in science should endeavor to equip the student with principles rather than facts and, what is of still greater import, it should train him in the use of these principles and in the application of them in explaining the phenomena of general experience. The acquisition of relatively large numbers of facts or the memorizing of printed rules and laws is a matter of comparatively easy accomplishment. The ability to analyze a situation and to recognize the underlying principle comes less readily. Still more difficult of acquirement is that mental habit which consistently seeks the explanation of the unfamiliar by means of the well-known. In the author's experience, furthermore, students know facts but lack the perspective which gives the appreciation of relative values. Their facts are for the most part individual units, like so many loose beads without any connecting thread by means of which the whole may be viewed as a unit and the relation of the individuals, each to the other, recognized. From certain of the many books at present on the market a good student may learn much chemistry; but the author has found it necessary to supply in lecture form the correlating factors and to keep pointing out the application of general principles to cases not less typical than the stereotyped illustration discussed in the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Compendious Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis The authors have endeavored to include in this short treatise enough of the theory and practice of qualitative analysis "in the wet way," to bring out all the reasoning involved in the subject, and to give the student a firm hold upon the general principles and methods of the art. It has been their aim to give only so much of mechanical detail as is essential to an exact comprehension of the methods and to success in the actual experiments. Hence, the multiplication of different tests or processes, having essentially the same object, has been purposely avoided. For the same reason none of the rare elements are alluded to. The manual is intended to meet the wants of the general student, to whom the study is chiefly valuable as a means of mental discipline and as a compact example of the scientific method of arriving at truth. To professional students who wish to make themselves expert analysts, this little book offers a logical introduction to the subject, an outline which is trustworthy as far as it goes, but which needs to be filled in and enlarged by the subsequent use of some more elaborate treatise as a book of reference. Professor Johnson, of Yale, has supplied this need with his excellent edition of Fresenius's comprehensive manual. The authors believe that they have put into the following pages as much of inorganic qualitative analysis as is useful for training, and also as much as the engineer, physician, agriculturist or liberally educated man needs to know. The book has been written for the use of classes in the Institute of Technology, who have already studied the authors' "Manual of Inorganic Chemistry." It is simply an implement devised to facilitate the giving of thorough instruction to large classes in the laboratory. It is the authors' practice to examine their classes orally every four or five exercises, in order to secure close attention to the reasoning of the subject. Here he is first instructed in the properties of a few of the constituents of common salts, and is taught methods for their separation or identification in presence of one another. If he goes no further than this he will at least have learnt what chemical analysis means. He afterwards proceeds to extend his knowledge, till at the end of the course he will be able to analyse any mixture of ordinary inorganic substances. The analytical part is to a great extent shorn of directions for manipulation, as well as of details which are not relevant to the immediate object of the experiment. According to my experience these are not only of no use, but are a positive hindrance to the apprehension of the facts to be acquired. Manipulation can only be learnt properly under personal instruction by a competent teacher, and more will be accomplished by letting the beginner see once for all how a thing is to be done than by whole volumes of printed directions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Qualitative and Quantitative Chemical Analysis In this work the author has brought together what has already been published, separately, in the Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis, by himself and Dr. S. M. Babcock, and the Notes on Chemical Analysis, by himself alone; he has added thereto much matter on qualitative analysis, all of Parts III and IV on quantitative analysis, and nearly all of Part V. Of course no such work as this can be satisfactorily prepared without frequent reference to the standard treatises of Prescott and Johnson, and of Fresenius, in one of which the whole subject of qualitative analysis is very thoroughly treated, and in the other both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The author would acknowledge his indebtedness to these works, while claiming for himself at least some novelty in the arrange ment of the matter, as well as in some of the matter itself, in this attempt to prepare a book that is much needed in his own laboratory. Also, for valuable suggestions in the revision of the work for this edition, he is indebted to Professor Dennis, and Instructors Chamot and Smith, of the University. Certain modifications in the spelling of chemical terms, adopted, after very careful consideration, by the Chemical Sec tion of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, are used in this book.
